Located in Vietnam’s remote North West Moun-tains, Sapa is famous for both its fine, rugged scenery and also its rich cultural diversity. Sapa, at 1,600m above sea level, is an incredibly pic-turesque resort town that lays on the Hoang Lien Son mountain range near the Chinese border in north-western Vietnam, known as “the Tonki-nese Alps”. Sapa and its surrounding region is host to many hill tribes, as well as rice terraces, lush vegetation and Fansipan (Phan Xi Phang),

the highest peak in Vietnam at 3,143m. As a result of a recent surge in popularity Sapa has rapidly become a tourist hot-spot. Sapa is home to a wealth of colorful, diverse hill tribes, who have steadfastly resisted integra-tion into Vietnamese society and modern life. In fact, the hill tribes, including the Hmong, Dao (Dzao), Tay, Day (Dzay) and Xa Pho, comprise the majority of inhabitants in the area, outnum-bering the Vietnamese (Kinh) who prefer the warmer low lands.about sapa

Sapa is home to a great diversity of ethnic mi-nority people. Communication objectives

/ Model scale of Sapa and terraces rices Most of the ethnic minority people work their land on sloping terraces since the vast majority of the land is mountainous. Their staple foods are rice and corn. Rice, by its very nature of being a labour intensive crop, makes the daily fight for survival paramount. The unique climate in Sapa has a major influ-ence on the ethnic minorities who live in the area. With sub-tropical summers, temperate winters and 160 days of mist annually, the influence on agricultural yields and health related issues are significant.

The minority people can only yield one crop of rice annually, which leads to food shortfalls in many communes at specific times. This shortage of food contributes to malnutrition and other related health problems. The climatic conditions also contribute to many health issues including coughs, colds, and bronchial and respiratory problems that are commonplace throughout the com-munity.

/ Travel info and photos gallery on location This space will take you around sapa with popular areas, beauty landscapes and local people. there are include: - Silver Falls is one of the region’s major attractions. It is possible to climb to the top of the waterfalls. From there, there is an excellent view of the wa-terfalls. - Coc Ly market is the chance for the minorities to meet and share joy and sorrows after the crops, to exchange one another’s experience. - Fansipan Moutain We see at 3, 143 meters above sea level in the Nortwest-ern part of Vietnam, Mount Phan Xi Pang - the highest summit in Indochina is located. It forms a significant part of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, which is a part of the Hoang Lien Nature Reserve and encompasses approxi-mately 30 km2 of mountainous landscape. The reserve contains temperate and subtemperate forests and provides habitats for a variety of plant and animal species of which, some are endemic to North-West Vietnam.

/ Jewellery and handicraft Silver jewellery is still made by numerous ethnic groups. The Hmong from Sa Pa and the Dao are renowned for their necklaces consisting of several silver circles put together – the weight of the jewel is also a wealth and status symbol as silver metal used to be one of the main ways of hoarding wealth. The Tày from Văn Bàn make beautiful silver bangles. Depending on the area and on the subgroups they belong to, the Hmong and the Dao are distinguished by the shape of their earrings. Handmade Sapa products, especially beautiful handmade handbags, hand-made silk clothing, Sapa handicraft, and handmade lacquer, wood and bamboo products.

Communication objectives

/ Farm products This space introduces products farm in market, rice in bamboo, fruit, alcohol, wine, tea. Specail food style is just only in Sapa.Rice is packed into bamboo, soaked in water for several hours, boiled, then cooked over a grill. Rice in bamboo can be found all over the Sapa area.

/ Traditional custom and textiles Originally from china, the Tay , Xa Pho, Dzay, Dzao and H’Mong are the five main ethnic groups found in the scenic highlands near Sapa, all with unique cultures tradition, and spectacular textiles. Villagers often trek to Sapa to sell handicrafts to tourists. Brightly-garbed women carrying deep baskets woven or a baby swathed in cloth are a famil-iar sight on the winding mountainous roads. Although Sapa’s colorful market overflows with traditional garments and garish accessories, the best way to see local textile production is to trek to local villages.H’mong people have different techniques to dye garments. Using a tool which holds small amounts of beeswax, women mark out repetitive zig-zags, short crosses and other geometric shapes on long lengths of fabric, which are then dyed in a cold indigo vat. When the wax boils off, the batik material can be used to make pleated skirts, baby carriers, and jackets.

First concept is quiet narrow to the real site thats i have choice. Lack of objects display. Not many people can access at a time. But its quiet interesting space concept relate to form of stairs (terraces rice)

Page 19: exhibition design

Second concept is more space for audiencesBetter field to display objects.up to 50 peoples at same timeCentral space exhibition inspired on fire camp market.

Page 20: exhibition design

Spatial response to site
