YOU probably couldnt throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (were joking!) and to this end offer a weekly lesson to help you com-municate. Please note the Russian we are printing is our phonetic interpretation to make for easy reading.

PRINCE Filipe of Portugal and his father, King Carlos, were shot by a revolution-ary assassin in 1908. The king was killed instantly, while the prince survived the initial shootings, but died on his way to hospital. Technically, he was king for a few minutes.

AS THIS picture from 1870 shows, some things never change. Just like todays visitors climb onto empty lifeguard chairs or huddle in the dinghies for pictures, so did Victorian guests. This picture was taken in front of todays Inn of Cape May. Avondale now sits where the two houses are in the middle of the picture. If you look just behind the people, you can see the railing that lined the boardwalk and in the distance, you can see the col-umns of the Stockton Hotel their private lifesaving service used this dinghy. GRASS VALLEY, CA: A 2:10pm caller from the 10000 block of Bettcher Court reported a neighbor was yelling at him. The neighbor called and said the first caller was swinging a baseball bat at his friends. The first caller then called back and said the neighbors friends were trying to run him over. Depu-ties went to the scene to mediate the matter. The Union

ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the islands fine Asian restau-rant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we dont. The above fortune cookie was eaten with the Bento Box (teriyaki, tempura, sushi, rice and a salad). Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manu-facturers. We print them as we find them.

A Night On The TownBars, restaurants, culture and events... Dan Mathers weekly guide to whats going on in Cape May

the phone, the more ducks join in. Turns out it was my KEYS that I left at

home, Duck laughed.I was nearly in tears, and Ducks one-man

show set the tone for the rest of the perfor-mance. The crowd extremely diverse in age were all enjoying full-on laughter by the time the show stopped for intermission. I must say, started Duck as he slapped his wife with the program, Im having fun! This came from a

HAVING been misinformed that they could provide us some background information about East Lynne Theatre, my wife and I joined Carol and Duck

Menz for drinks before the opening perfor-mance of The Dictator. I never do anything like this, said, Im usually in bed by this time.

As for Duck, he admitted he wasnt a the-atre buff I dont even do that well with TV, he said, before downing a glass of Knob Creek bourbon with me. After accumulating a decent buzz, we headed to the theatre.

There was the standard warning at the beginning of the show to silence all cellphones Duck assured us he hadnt brought his. Then, early in the first act Ducks pocket started quacking. His initial reaction was to reach into his pocket and squeeze the phone between his hands to muffle the duck.

Turn it off! Carol hissed.I dont know how, Duck said, not quietly. He took the phone from his pocket and a

chorus of waterfowl erupted as he passed it to his wife. The longer you go without answering

man who admitted television and movies only hold his interest with fast-paced shootouts and action scenes. So this was quite a compliment.

The interactions between Gayle Stahl-huth, playing the part of the fiery Juanita, and Brad Heikes, a clever card shark and acciden-tal criminal, kept the crowd laughing straight through to the end. Brad, an actor whos appeared on Broadway, was very frank about his reasons for joining East Lynne for The Dicta-tor. I got a job offer, he said.

Brad atoned for this moments later by mentioning how happy he was to be in Cape May and what a pleasure it was working at East Lynne. Clifford (Frank) Rivera seconded that motion. Im gonna be sad to leave. Its a great break from the noise and traffic of Manhattan. I should mention that an understated perfor-mance from Frank, as a two-timing, penny-hungry local, was funny in its own right.

Before leaving, I asked Duck for his review of the show. I actually enjoyed it more than the movies, he said, because it was it was right here. It was live.

I UNDERSTAND that the new Convention Hall debate is vital, and how there are many vested interests and emotions which come into play regarding this plan. I was struck

by Jack Wrights words in the Ramblings column on July 27 that some folks feel that the longer theyve been a resident or vacationer of Cape May, the more heavily their opinion should be factored. From the f lip side, I also see how some people may feel that the longer theyve been around, the more theyve seen in terms of suc-cesses, failures, mishaps, bad judgment calls, and shrewd decision-making. These people may feel that they have an insid-ers perspective to what newcomers may gloss over. Newcomers may breathe life into something that has become stagnant. However, the overall decision must propel the continued growth of the Cape May.

I live in a small town that shares many of the same struggles Cape May currently faces. Its actually ironic how the issues almost parallel those of Cape May: park-

ing meter woes, new building in the heart of town being re-constructed, overzealous parking ticket distribution, some citizens welcoming change and others not so much. In the end, the interest should be for the growth of the town. It is certainly difficult to deal with change, but sometimes it just has to happen.

Not that my opinion in this matter counts. Im not a citizen of Cape May and I dont pay property taxes there (though if I could reduce my property taxes here to a

Cape May amount, I could afford a second home!). Ive vacationed there my entire life, so well round it out to roughly 30 years. Ive seen some pleasing changes and some unsightly ones. There were some I did not initially agree with, but as time passed, I realized that they were the right decision for Cape May and aided the towns con-tinued progress. Which Convention Hall design would offer the most options? Is the larger design more risky but also more beneficial in the long run?

The similarities between my town and Cape May end with the local economy: my hometown isnt largely supported by tour-ism. Cape May plays host to a wide variety of local happenings and larger scale events. The more functional the accommodations are, the more Cape May can provide to its citizens, its returning visitors, and the future tourists who have yet to discover it.

Ill leave you with an observation from Benjamin Franklin: Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.

The Old FogeyAh, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson DCatur

years that my trusty, faithful Yorkshrie Terrier Young Albert (the common name is mere coincidence) passes away, to be carried in state by a dozen black-clad men to the bottom of the garden and lovingly placed in a tiny black marble replica of the Taj Mahal.

Of course I have fought like a lion both for and against various royals: I was initially on the side of King George, then very much against him in this fine nations

I WENT off the Royals after Queen Vicky. She was a classy lady, that one: tough as old boots and she car-ried a f latiron hidden in her muff that she would whip out and rattle

off a chaps brow if she thought he was not showing respect.

I was also very fond of Prince Albert, her beloved consort, although I have not forgiven him for persuading me to adopt that particular style of personal piercing he pioneered, and that was for a short while all the rage.

It wasnt that I was unhappy with the results, just that I was passing a junk yard some months later as the large magnet a working-class fellow was operating from a crane passed close overhead. My feet were off the ground faster than I could say A pox on you, sirrah! and I was dangling 30 feet off the ground by my codpiece.

I shall speak no more of the incident, other than to say that I have never been happier to have a pocket knife on me than that day. Nor have I cried so much as an adult, excepting that awful time every few

revolutionary spat. And I was at the head of the mob

howling for Marie Antoinettes head after she told us to go and eat macaroons (later accounts have been garbled: had she really asked us to eat cake I would have calmed the whole thing down, as I have always been easily won over by a nice walnut loaf). And then again I was Robert Bruces right-hand man when he drove the hated English from Scotland, in part because he was what every king should be bold, tall, handsome and whimsically cruel and in part because I have legs that are crowd-stoppers in a kilt, and wanted to be on the side that dressed best. (I let this principle drop in WWII.)

Modern-day royals, though, are a dif-ferent matter. They need to go the way of the buffalo: hunted, skinned and eaten until they no longer walk the earth. I sup-pose I would make an exception for Queen Liz of England, as she is very ancient. And would taste stringy.

    Yours fondly, my humble servants.

The Organic Column A useful and inspiring guide to eating healthy, natural foods - by Katie Panamarenko

the constitution. This one just gives me smile and perhaps a glimmer of hope that one day it will be constitutional to employee organic practices as law.

ELEMENTAL basic. Organic practice is a simple concept. A crop or animal grows and produces at its own rate with nothing but that which it would/could use from the earth itself.

ESSENTIAL necessary. If we dont take the dire steps of change we could do perma-nent damage to our soil and ourselves and,

THIS week I thought it would be interesting to look at some synonyms for organic. I found these terms were not only alter-nates but also explained, almost

poetically, what organic can mean beyond its simple synonym.

ANIMATE make somebody or something lively. Precisely what an organic diet can do for an individual who commits to an organic lifestyle. When you cleanse your body of tox-ins and hormonally altered foods you literally feel refreshed, energized and renewed.

BIOLOGICAL of living things. There are no frills with organic. It is merely true, natu-ral, untainted growth and production. And of course, pesticides are generally NOT of living things.

CELLULAR containing small parts or groups. Going back to the individuals ide-als and practices, condoning smaller farms producing higher quality but perhaps not as much quantity (as we have led ourselves to believe we need).

    CONSTITUTIONAL in accordance with

therefore, our quality of life. INNATE present from birth. We are born

organic. It is up to us to make it a priority to maintain that purity.

INTEGRAL forming an essential part of something. Organic should be an integral part of our daily lives in our meals, daily activi-ties and more! Organic can span beyond food as well. It is a way of thinking, acting and being.

PRIMARY most important. Eating and more specifically nutrition is one of our pri-mary means of survival. Why not make every effort to hold the highest standard for that which keeps us alive?

PRIME best. Organic is of the highest quality and of the purest form.

PRIMITIVE first. In the beginning there was organic. No pesticides, growth hormones or mass production. Just 0rganic.

VITAL required for the continuation of life. Need I say more?

If organic is unattainable, the next best choice is to shop at your local farm stands. After all, we ARE the Garden State!

A SHOW of new work by Cape May artist (and Exit Zero legend) Victor Grasso will open at SOMA New-Art Gallery this Saturday, August 7, with an Open-ing Artists Reception from 6-9pm. This is Grassos third solo exhibit at SOMA and he is returning with

a stunning new body of work which probes the imagery, history and myth of our region. My mission is to construct unusual cir-cumstances from ordinary situations, and my muse is the southern New Jersey coastline; mixing local flavor, a heavy dose of feminin-ity, historical irony, naturalism, and a rich maritime legacy, he says.

New to this exhibit, in addition to Grassos startlingly realis-tic oil and watercolor paintings, is his embrace of pen and ink to create an illusionary universe of what appear to be historical etch-ings, reminiscent of old maritime charts, secret maps, and Civil War engravings, always with Grassos darkly-ironic vision of star-tlingly-mischievous unpredictability.

Painting and drawing in the realist tradition, Grassos new work pushes the limits of the viewers visual perception as he explores the mysterious allure of the people, and the terrain, of the southern shore communities.

In the watercolor, Libertas, Grasso combines the setting of the historic Congress Hall Hotel, the American flag, a white steed, and a beautiful woman dressed in white, to create an almost mytho-logical, storybook, fairy-tale tableau.

In the oil painting, Bait, an octopus morphs from the mod-els head, sensuously descending like hair over her back. Grasso explains, I wanted a study of the female form punched up a bit with a Davy Jones Locker style, like some mythical siren bewitching a sailor. Another captivating image, aptly titled Triceratops, depicts a beautifully painted weathered piece of driftwood on Higbee Beach.
