On behalf of the Rotary Club of Exmouth & District I would like to wish all of our readers, their families and friends a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. This first six months has flown by, and I must say that I am enjoying my time as President of the club. At the beginning of this year we knew as a club that we must change and adapt to help those in the community and I am pleased to tell you that this is happening. During these past few years we have, as a club, tried to engage with the local school community by setting up an Interactclub at the Community College, however we have changed our approach and have succeeded in starting a Rotakids Club at the Marpool Primary School here in Exmouth. The children decided that they wanted to have more fun, and decided that Rotakids was the way forward. We hope their enthusiasm spreads to other primary schools in the area. More news will follow on dates for their Charter day. Another change this year is the partnership with the Community Larder under the leadership of the Exmouth branch of the Salvation Army. We will be giving the Community Larder £1,500 worth of food to be distributed to the poor and needy. This new scheme replaces our own, but enables us to give something to the poor and needy who need our support the most. The Club’s leadership team for 2015-16 has now been agreed. I will be President, while John Thorogood becomes President elect and Ian MacQueen becomes Vice President. While Rod Ford remains Treasurer I am pleased to announce that Malcolm Pressey will become our new Honorary Secretary (Continued on page 4)

Merry Christmas one and all. On behalf of the Rotary Club of Exmouth & District I would like to wish all of our readers, their families and friends a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. This first six months has flown by, and I must say that I am enjoying my time as President of the club. The successful and
well attended Exmouth Chamber of Commerce Big Breakfast Networking event held on Tuesday 4th November at the Man-or Hotel, Exmouth brought together three community groups to learn about each other, as well as providing an excellent networking opportunity for business owners in the town.
The breakfast, which attracted some 45 Chamber of Commerce members and other guests, was joined by several students from the Exmouth Community College Business Group, led by Deputy Principal,
Mr David Turner and Head of Business at the College, Mr David Hackett. The Chamber of Commerce is currently working closely in partnership with the group to develop employment initiatives for young people in the town and to enable students to experience work in business. As well as experiencing the benefits of business
networking, the students and others attending the breakfast were joined by several members of the Rotary Club of Exmouth & District and heard an interesting talk on the work of the Rotary Club in the town and the benefits to local
businesses of Rotary membership. The presentation was given by Club President Simon Wood and Rotarian Malcolm Pressey and was illustrated by a short video of the Exmouth Rotary Club
Kite Festival which showed how the annual event helps to raise substantial funds for local charities.
The Club Shop
Sales of Rotary Emblems continue across the nation and occasionally abroad generating £2,600 since 1 July 2014 with a return to the club of £398.
Youth Speaks
The youth speaks competitions 2015 will be held on 28th January for the Exmouth & District heats then on 25th February for the Area heats gong on to the District Final on 7th March.
Young Photographer
The theme for the next competition is “Light up the Community” with entries to be in by 9
th May 2015.
Young Musician
Our club’s 2014 Young Musician, Matthew Jackson, became BBC Radio 3 Young Composer of the Year and, subsequently, his composition was performed at the BBC “Last Night of the Proms”.

Frank reports that at the club’s recent Guest Evening, the speak-er, Rebecca Tinsley from The Network for Africa, received a cheque for £500 from the President of the Rotary Club Exmouth & District Simon Wood. Also pictured is Steven Govier, the Chairman of the club’s International & Foundation Committee. Rebecca explained to the meeting that the money would go to help the many people of Uganda who had not only suffered from endemic poverty but from the assaults of the Lord’s Resistance Army which, terrorising the North of the country, offered children as young as eight years old the choice of either killing others, sometimes their parents, or
being killed themselves. Until recently, Northern Uganda had a total shortage of basic medicines, even as simple as Aspirin, and a lack of psychiatric provision which might address its many problems. Now, The Net-work for Africa had com-menced the training of local
residents in the rudiments of stress remediation and community outreach, providing edu-cation in the necessary
skills to help over 50,000 affected residents in the north of the country. It is hoped to extend this to other areas. Rebecca explained that The Network for Africa is a totally self-financing non-governmental organisation not receiving help from associated governments nor from organisations such as the United Nations.

Rebecca, who was off to Belgium the following day to seek help, thanked the Rotary club for its much valued help and support.

Malcolm reports that It seems a long time ago that we all enjoyed our last Kite Festival in Exmouth in 2012 and now we are just 6 months away from the colourful spectacle of kites in the air again. The Festival now is under a joint committee with representatives from the Exmouth Festival and the Rotary Club of Exmouth & District. (Continued from front page) upon the retirement of our long standing Secretary, Rotarian Courtney Richards. At the latest District Council meeting the club was successfully recognised by the District and we were presented with the District website trophy,
alongside recognition from Rotary International for our contribution to the End Polio Now initiative which the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation match fund on a 2:1 basis. Our contribution is now worth over £8,000 for the year 2013 -14. We have had a successful year so far, and we hope to have several new members joining the club in January. Lets continue to enjoy Rotary, make new friends, and help those less fortunate than ourselves. Once again, enjoy the festive season and have a prosperous 2015.

At the meeting of the Exmouth & District Rotary Club last Monday 3rd November 2014, Pres-ident Simon Wood was pleased to present cheques totalling almost £2,000 raised at the Club’s recent Last Night of the Proms Concert, to Terry Darville and Pat Furzeman of Exmouth and Lympstone
Hospice care and to Beryl Schmidt-Rieche of Budleigh Salterton Hospiscare. The funds will go towards the much needed care and nursing carried out in their respective areas by the devoted nurses of Hospicare locally, as well as contributing to the other essential welfare projects provided by the Charity. The two together can be a godsend to civilization.” Your financial resources combined with your time, energy and talent is critical to Rotary’s mission. 89% of your contribution goes directly to the programs of The Rotary Foundation while 2% is used for administration and 9% is for fundraising. These
percentages are remarkable among charities across the world. This is why The Rotary Foundation gets such high marks from organizations that rank charities. As Rotarians, there is no better place to donate our money. We get to use our own contributions to do good in the world.

Last year, Frank gave his Baltimore Ravens quarterback, Joe Flacco, shirt to the Raptors, so has a keen interest in their programme. (So who are the Raptors? I hear you saying. Well, Exmouth Community College’s own American Football team of course). So Frank asked me to draw
Attention to something special being provided in Exmouth by our own Community College. An article from the Raptor’s page on the College website says:- ‘The Exmouth Community College American football Programme has had some fantastic publicity opportunities recently. First there was a three page spread in ‘Gridiron’ magazine – the premier NFL fan mag. for the UK, that show-cased the full breadth of the UK programme. Second was a half-page in the in-house professional journal for the British Psychological Society (circulation 48,000+) on how Exmouth Coach Rooksby used his extensive background in Psychology to help him create a recognised leading developmental schools’ Programme from zero knowledge and activity. Local publicity is in the pipeline and some interesting opportunities lie ahead connected to the opening of the new astro. The school and town’s reputation grows as a leading place to experience American football as it should be played in a school environment’.

The International Committee has just held its fourth Ceilidh. Once again a resounding success with over £540 pounds raised, for the charity "Mary's Meals". This is a growing international charity registered in Scotland making a global impact. Its simple objective -yet far from simple to achieve - is to provide one cooked meal a day to a child of school age living in absolute poverty in the poorest countries of the world. Currently over 920,000 children are fed every day. For a child to
be able to eat one good meal every day has a very beneficial knock-on effect in so many ways that aren't im-mediately obvious. They include the state of their health and their learning ability. Mary's Meals has an excellent web
site which is easily found by googling the name. The Public Hall at Budleigh
Salterton could not have tak-en many more and still have left room for the dancing which continued late into the evening. It was great to see every face smiling even if some were
experiencing two left feet, their own or someone else’s! Pam Hayes, the call-er and the band Spinach for Norman were excellent as per usual. Thanks go to all those who couldn't come but who, nevertheless, gave generously with their mon-ey, items to be raffled or auctioned and in giving their time in the food preparation, manning the bar and in general organisation of the event. What a fun way to raise money to help vulnerable children who have next to nothing, not even one good meal a day.

wishing well. Graham was in
his element with another
celebrity – after his previous “roll-around’ with Ann Widdecombe at Torquay last year. The wishing well project has proven to be a great success and over the last 7 years has raised over
£31,400. This is a
magnificent sum, and apart from the Money donated as mentioned earlier we have also given to ‘Play pumps for Africa’ via the Crealy Well, Devon Air Ambulance Trust via the Ladram Bay Well and of course to many other local worthy causes. So, with the project, well and truly established since 2008, an average annual income of £5,000 a year is being generated for all the charities the club wishes to support. It is an efficient way to fund raise, a tribute to the schemes founders.

join forces to
purchase lifesaving
equipment
A large team of volunteers and supporters of the Exmouth Beach Rescue Club took part in the 12th Rotary Club of Exmouth & District ‘The Walk or Ride 2014’ in April this year raising an amazing £510 for their local volunteer Beach Lifeguard charity. The funds raised were match funded by the local Rotary Club by an additional £500 making a total of £1,010.00 raised by the two charities joint initiative. Using the funds, Exmouth Beach Rescue have recently purchased a new Tohatsu outboard motor to power their second inflatable rescue craft, designed for quick and immediate inshore water deployment directly from Exmouth Beach. President of the Rotary Club of Exmouth & District, Mr Si-mon Wood, said “The recent tragic events in
Newquay bring home to all of us the importance of having a local, well trained and well equipped lifesaving organisation such as Exmouth Beach Rescue. The Rotary Club are very pleased to support this essential local charity in the purchase of this vital new equipment and we hope it will serve the organisation well for many years.” Mr Nigel Snowshall, Treasurer of Exmouth Beach Rescue, said “We have entered a large team of our volunteers and supporters in the Rotary Club ‘Walk or Ride’ event for several years to fundraise for our organisation. This year we are especially grateful to the Rotary Club for their additional generous donation which has enabled us to purchase this important equipment which will serve to enhance the service we provide on Exmouth seafront.” ‘The Walk or Ride' is designed as a
sponsored “family fun” charity event organised by The Rotary Club of Exmouth & District for walkers or cyclists wishing to raise funds for their favourite individual charity, club or other good cause or for anyone who would just like to take a pleasant outing in East Devon’s beautiful countryside. Local Rotary Club Members arrange and manage the event in its entirety. Some 225 entrants took part in this year’s event that provided a range of three walks of 5, 8 or 12 miles distance and a 14 mile cycle ride. Next year’s ‘Walk or Ride’ is scheduled to take place on Sunday 26

Martin writes, “Our Club is triumphant at skittles once again!! This time at our annual challenge against the Inner Wheel ladies for the greatly coveted ceramic plate!! It is such a shame that such a wonderful trophy created by Sue Naile has never been won by her team!! Never mind Sue-perhaps next year? The lady top scorer was Shirley Pressey and for us - who else-but our ‘magnifico’ Capitan-David
Matthews. They both went home with a bottle of wine. The challenge match was followed by the very popular game of ‘killer’. This time it was Norman Hawkins time to strike narrowly beating Shirley Pressey (yes - that' s right the same one and yes,
Malcolm was there but not up to Shirley's standard on the night!).
Norman kindly donated his winnings to the Inner Wheel Club. Good skittles and an excellent buffet prepared by Paul at the Police Club. Thank you to all 25 who supported the evening”.
The League Two played and two won! Firstly against Exeter City and more recently 330 pins to 303 against Sid Valley. Once again our top scorer was Norman with 48 also equalled by Francis. On this usually "unfriendly" alley our team had 9 spares and a 13! The selector-me-had such a bad night that I decided to take a holiday. *Well done lads!* He’s back- refreshed we hope!
