Events - A Year in Review

EFM's Community Education Events(formerly known as ‘Lecture Series’), werean outstanding success this year withimportant and compelling topics, impactfulspeakers, and 100+ registrants for everyevent!

EFM’s goal for 2018-2019 CommunityEducation Events was to provide broaderofferings of community learningopportunities to reach more people withfilms, lectures, and field trips.

Films: We co-hosted two environmentalfilms: Rebels with a Cause with the City ofNovato and Wasted: The Story of FoodWaste with Sustainable Fairfax. The Rebelsfilmmakers, Nancy Kelly and KenjiYamamoto, gave a short talk and answeredquestions following the screening.

Lectures: Last November, renowned authorArlie Hochschild presented her book,"Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger andMourning on the American Right" to apacked house at Corte Madera CommunityCenter. Between January and April, EFMpresented a four-part series on Innovationin Climate Protection. Programs andspeakers addressed innovative solutions forclimate change mitigation and adaptation.Topics included Biomimicry and nature-based solutions, the built environment andembodied carbon emissions, carbonsequestration technologies and approaches, and federal climate policy.

Knowledgeable speakers from across theBay Area, as well as Congressman JaredHuffman, contributed to these compellingprograms. Attendance at all events was thehighest in EFM’s history with more than 500people attending an EFM CommunityEducation Event.

Field Trips: For the first time, EFM openedits signature West Marin field trip to non-Master Class students. Seven participantsattending the Global Climate Action Summitin September joined the Master Class for aday in West Marin. The guestsenthusiastically took their experience and

Continuing theConversationThe Potential of IntergenerationalCollaboration to Solve the ClimateCrisis

Over the past several months, I haveengaged in four events during whichmembers of the younger and oldergenerations explored the followingquestions: 1) What might the generationsaccomplish together that they could notaccomplish by themselves? 2) What are thebarriers to overcome for intergenerationalcollaboration to be effective? and 3) Whatare some of the ways these barriers can beovercome?

The recent actions by young climateactivists around the world, such as GretaThunberg of Sweden and her Schools Strikefor Climate Action Movement, the SunriseMovement, the Extinction Rebellion and OurChildren’s Trust, are building a majorworldwide movement that is sorely neededto wake up those in power, or as the recentClimate One program coined it “If YouWon't, We Will!” This is indeed the time forthe elders to step forward and support theseyoung activists. As one younger person atan event said: “We don’t want you in frontof us, we don’t want you behind us, wewant you beside us.” (I've highlighted thepowerful influence of these young activistsin my last two blogsat www.WilfordWelch.com/blog).
