16 novEMbEr 2018 – 24 fEbruAry 2019 philippE VandEnBErg KAMIKAzE The destruction (Kamikaze) of the pre-ceding as a fundamental condition for all creativity became the belgian artist Philippe vandenberg’s (1952-2009) key stylistic and working principle. His pictures tell of the dark side of humanity, of hatred and violence, coldness and agitation – and of communicating and sharing among humans via art. vanden-berg’s art is marked by an intensity that captivates and irritates, addresses and engages the viewer – and inspires reflection.

sIncE 1600 whether it be volcano eruptions, firestorms, earthquakes or shipwrecks: catastrophes are firmly anchored in our consciousness, are usually unpredictable and tend to occur at regular intervals. The exhibition spanning various periods traces the development of disaster pictures and, at the same time, examines the reasons behind this subject’s prevalence in art.

The great artists Giambattista Tiepolo, fragonard, françois boucher, Joshua reynolds and Goya responded to the ideological, political and societal changes of the 18th century with their art. They revolutionized painting by redefining artistic standards and breaking with conventions in an equally innovative and provocative manner. based on these fundamental changes, they created the foundations of Modernism in the great artistic centres of venice, Paris, london, Hamburg and Madrid.
31 AuGusT 2019 – 5 JAnuAry 2020 150 YEars HAMburGEr KunsTHAllEIn 2019 the Hamburger Kunsthalle is celebrating its 150th anniversary. since 1869 the uniquely comprehensive collec-tion, developed from the beginning by the citizens of Hamburg, has been open to the public at the heart of the city. The joint effort has resulted in one of the most important museums in Germany. In the anniversary year, we will direct our attention to the museum and its col-lection from diversified and sometimes unusual perspectives: with many inter-ventions in the collection, discussions, the participation of our audience and, not least, a big birthday party.

The ordrupgaard Musuem with its masterpieces of Danish painting of the 19th and early 20th century will be hosted at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. Towards the end of the 19th century the transition to Modern Art took its course also in Denmark. It involved the end of the grand narratives and an orientation towards simple, real life. The spectrum of the show ranges from the pioneers of the Golden Age to representatives of the national romantic style, all the way to the prominent symbolist vilhelm Hammershøi.
Around 1,000 artworks are on display in the Hamburger Kunsthalle’s newly designed galleries for its permanent collection. In our highlight tours, we will show you the gems of the house.
