brighten up the waiting area desk. She supplies the area with jigsaw puzzles. She feels working on a puzzle can help calm people while they are waiting for their loved one and needing a break while visiting in the ICU.

On Mondays and Fridays, after her volunteer shift, Jane will drive to the dialysis center for her treatment. She also goes there on Wednesday, as well.

Jane explained, “The actual dialysis process is four hours, but with the before-and-after prep, it is much longer. I can read, watch TV, or nap.”

When asked if she ever gets discouraged, she was quick to reply, “Of course, everybody does.” She continued, “I try to keep myself occupied, and I have a very strong faith.” Her friend, a priest at St. Paul’s Episcopalian Church in Plymouth, has bonded well with Jane, and appreciates her help with the nursing home masses and bible studies.

Last summer, Jane started a patient support group for kidney dialysis patients at Faro’s Restaurant in Fond du Lac (email her at [email protected] f or more information). She also attends a monthly support group in Milwaukee for all organ transplants.

She once told this writer, “I have a choice. I can stay home and feel sorry for myself and wait to die, or I can get out and live.” A good mantra for somebody who always tries to be upbeat, despite her numerous serious medical issues.

Jane has spoken to different groups of the need for organ transplants and added, “I would be happy to do this again for an audience that wants to know more about organ donors/transplants.”

“Approximately 2,000 people in Wisconsin are waiting for an organ transplant.” She continued, “My wish is that this story will help bring awareness to the seriousness of kidney disease and the importance of organ donations, I hope more people will decide to donate.”

Carter remains upbeat despite medical issues

Jane Carter, 59, of Fond du Lac, has experienced more than her share of medical issues. Yet, when meeting her, one would

never guess what she faces every day. Jane’s warm smile and welcoming demeanor, and even her humor, often overshadows the numerous serious medical issues that she deals with on a daily basis.

Jane was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and later moved to Pittsburgh, Penn., for a short time, and then relocated to Green Lake, Wis., when her father retired. It was in Green Lake where she graduated from high school, before she left for college in Denver, Colo. Jane graduated in 1977 from Colorado Women’s College, and then returned there in 1990 to finish her formal education with a Master’s degree in Business Administration. During those years in Denver, she worked as a bookkeeper for various small businesses.

Then in 1996, she returned to Green Lake and lived with her father until his death in 2000. The following year, Jane moved to Fond du Lac, and now calls it her home, still having many fond memories of the family home in Green Lake.

Although there were no family medical history of any serious issues, Jane was diagnosed with diabetes in 1989. In 2002, other medical problems began to surface. Three years later, in 2005, Jane went on dialysis three times a week. She noted, “The kidney disease was the direct result of the diabetes.”

Jane has Type 1 diabetes and is insulin-dependent. Medically, Jane is known as a “brittle” diabetic, and has to check her blood sugar four times a day, and watch her diet closely. For the past 10 years, she has worn a small continuous infusion device (like the size of a cell phone) that administers daily diabetic medication.

Jane waited four months until she was “matched” with a new kidney. She received her kidney transplant at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee in October 2005, and remained in the hospital “about a week.” She laughingly continued, “It was a shorter hospital stay than when I had my appendix removed in 1974.”

Through routine blood tests, five years later, in 2010, Jane learned her kidneys were failing. Once again, in November 2010, she started dialysis three times a week at the Dialysis Center, located at 101 S. Pioneer Road, Fond du Lac.

Story by Lois A. Pflum I Photos by Aileen Andrews/Action Reporter Media

She is currently waiting for a second kidney, and is on the waiting list at both Froedtert and University of Wisconsin Hospital. In the meantime, Jane’s fluid is restricted to about one liter per day.

She explained how one goes about getting on a waiting list. First, have an extensive blood and cardiac work-up, and extensive G.I (colonoscopy and other tests), to see if a match is compatible. Then consultations among doctors, nurses, social workers, (and sometimes psychiatrists), to decide if the patient would be a good match. The results are entered into a national database to search for a compatible donor.

Jane is presently under the care of nephrologist, Rafal G. Ciecierski MD, of the Fond du Lac Regional Clinic. Jokingly she said, “We call him Dr. C.”

Jane had another setback about three years ago. She suffered a mild heart attack and ended up in ICU at St. Agnes Hospital for a short time. Ironically, Jane had been (and still does) volunteer in the ICU family waiting room. Her warm, empathetic demeanor welcomes those she encounters in her twice-weekly volunteer position there. Jane will always go out of her way to offer comfort, and listen to family members when they come to visit a seriously ill family member. She humbly commented, “You never know until you walk in their shoes.”

Jane always sees to it that seasonal decorations and holiday candies are put out to offer visitors. In the summer, she often brings fresh flowers to

There are several kinds of doctor visits that now have varying levels of Medicare

coverage. It’s important for Medicare members to understand the differences between the different kinds of visits, when they are available, and what Medicare covers. The two types of visits discussed here are the welcome to Medicare visit and the annual wellness visit. A Medicare member will not have to pay for either the welcome to Medicare visit or the annual wellness visit – the Part B deductible does not apply and there is no co-pay.

During the first 12 months you have had Medicare, you are entitled to a welcome to Medicare preventative visit. This visit will include a review of your medical and social history, counseling about preventative services, and some screenings, shots, and may provide referrals to

follow up with other doctors. You and your health care provider will create a written plan for preventative services. This visit is covered one time during your first 12 months on Medicare Part B.

After you have had Medicare Part B for 12 months, you will be entitled to a yearly wellness visit. A Medicare wellness visit is not the same thing as an annual physical. Medicare will cover your annual wellness visit, whereas Medicare will not cover a physical. The focus of this visit is also preventative. If you have not already created a prevention plan during your welcome to Medicare visit, you can do so at this time. If you have created a prevention plan, you can update the plan at your annual wellness visit. In addition, your health care provider will ask you to complete a health risk assessment questionnaire. The questionnaire will help the provider to create a prevention plan that is

fit for your specific needs. Some screenings and other preventative services may be offered.

One annual wellness visit is covered each year by Medicare; 11 months must have passed since your last wellness visit for the visit to be covered. To make the most of your wellness visit, bring your medical and immunization records, family health history, and a list of all the medications you currently take.

However, it is important to be aware that additional tests and services are not covered during the annual wellness visit. If your doctor performs tests or services that are not covered as a preventative benefit,

you may have to pay 20 percent and the Part B deductible will apply to the visit. For example, clinical lab tests are not included in Medicare wellness visits. When you call to schedule this appointment, be sure to ask for the “Medicare wellness visit” specifically.

For more information, read “Your guide to Medicare’s preventive services.” This guide from Medicare explains in detail which services are covered and how often. For further information contact Julie Hilbert, elder benefit specialist with the Department of Senior Services at (920) 929-3521.

Miami and everything it has to offerBy Valerie and Wayne Graczyk

If you woke up on a below-zero morning in Fond du Lac to the ringing of the phone offering you

a free ticket to Miami, Florida, would you go? Of course you would go, and I did. My sister’s husband called and said, “Valerie, you have to join us for our 40th Wedding Anniversary celebration!”

The smashed vaseMy sister had a houseful of guests

so she needed us to vacate the house so she could focus on the evening party. We went to the newly-opened Perez Art Museum in Miami to view an exhibit by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. As we walked around, we came upon a platform filled with colorful vases. Not being an

artist myself I looked at them and personally thought they were rather gaudy. On the wall in front of the vases were three life-size photos of the artist Ai Weiwei smashing a vase. In that moment I did have the urge to pick up one of the vases and smash it. However, it didn’t stop a local artist from Miami a few days later from picking up one of the vases and smashing it. He was protesting the lack of local artist’s work being exhibited at the Perez. When I saw it on the news I couldn’t believe it because I had just been there. The “gaudy” vase he had smashed was valued at $1 million!

That said, the Perez Museum was well worth a visit. It is a contemporary art museum located in downtown Miami just off Biscayne Boulevard. The price tag for constructing this hurricane- and flood-proof building was 131 million dollars. As we approached the museum, we saw a unique feature - Hanging vertical gardens on the outside walls that were made up of all local plants and vegetation.

Archaeological digOver the years I have heard a

great deal about the “Miami Circle.” My sister wrote a children’s book about it titled, “MillieMay and the Miami Circle” by Yvonne Thibaudeau Moyer. The Circle was discovered when a developer tore down an apartment complex. Archaeologists found some unusual holes cut into the bedrock and a further excavation revealed an ancient circular formation. Along with the find were human teeth and tools dating as far back as 2,000 years ago. It is believed the Circle and items were from a Tequesta Indian village. After a great deal of protesting and advocacy by concerned citizens (my sister being one of them) the location is now a well-preserved park with signage explaining the discovery. The location is in downtown Miami at the mouth of the Miami River. Recently they have unearthed another eight

Tequesta Indian Circles and these had remnants of raised huts on stilts with connected raised walkways between them. It is believed the huts were raised because of flooding of the nearby river and bay.

Replicating a wedding photoI have five sisters and one brother.

All five sisters were able to make it for the 40th Anniversary celebration, but my brother was unable to attend due to a business trip. At the reception, there was a poster size photo of the original wedding party. We were asked to pose as we had in the photo. Let’s just say a few things had changed since that original picture.

Must-see in Miami If you do visit Miami, and I hope

you do, I have two other great recommendations for you to enjoy while there. Miami is known for its miles of white sand beaches. The most popular beach is named “South Beach” and it is a major entertainment destination area, with great restaurants and famous hotels such as the Fountain Blue. I read that the Jackie Gleason Show was taped there and Miami Vice used South Beach as a backdrop for much of its filming. I prefer the less-crowded area just off Ocean Drive, where you can rent a big umbrella and a couple of lounge chairs and gaze out at the blue, blue water and listen to the sound of the waves.

In this same area is the Art Deco Information Center and a walking tour. If you have the time, the tour is really worth it. There are over 800 Art Deco buildings of significant historical value dating back to the 1920s-1940s. Art Deco is known by its stark lines, bold colors and zig-zag architectural features. The tour begins on 5th Street and dead ends onto Ocean Drive. The Park Central Hotel between 6th and 7th street was a well-known hangout for Hollywood stars including Clark Gable and Rita Hayworth.Valerie stands outside of the Perez Art Museum in Miami, Fla.
