The latest award presented to Dave Andrew on July 8 at the Dave Andrew Youth Baseball Field on Morningside Drive was

the naming of a youth baseball team after him. The presentation was made by Bob Rundle, former director of the Fond du Lac Recreation Department.

Dave mentioned his team played against the Laconia team in which his grandson, 14-year-old Jared, is the pitcher. Mary, his wife, jokingly asked, “Who do you cheer for?” Dave further joked, “Laconia won, ” but added, “They played a very good game.”

It was a night to remember. KFIZ broadcasted the game, which was played on the Dave Andrew Field with a team named after him. Plus, Dave was honored for his 40 years of dedicated involvement with Fond du Lac Youth Baseball.

Born in Brothertown, Dave grew up in Rogersville and attended a one-room school house through eighth grade. After he graduated from Rosendale High School in 1957, he helped out on

Mr. Baseballhis parents’ farm. For a few years, he worked as a press operator for International Paper. Dave served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964. He

then worked at Mercury Marine for 37 years, retir-ing in 2001. His family consists of Mary (whom he married in June 1964), four adult children: Allan, Michael, Terese and Kristin; and nine grandchil-dren.

Dave’s love of baseball goes back to the time his sons Allan and Michael played in youth baseball. He coached their teams for nine years, but contin-ued with the organization after they moved on. His involvement from 1975 to the present day (2015) is still evident.

Dave was a coach, director and supervisor of Fond du Lac Youth Baseball, and it was in 2002 that a field was named after him on Morningside Drive. From 1981 to 2005, Dave served as supervisor and has been a board member since 1983. In those early years, Mary personally washed and mended the pants of team members. Now, Dave takes them to a laundromat to have them washed. He still keeps busy with youth baseball player registration, scheduling youth baseball city games, fund-raising, collecting money from the 59 coaches for program expenses, and organizing the equipment stored at the Fond du Lac Recreation Department.

A few of Dave’s most memorable highlights: ● Receiving an award from Bob Uecker at

Milwaukee County Stadium for his involvement with Fond du Lac Youth Baseball.

● Receiving an award from Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association (W.B.C.A.) in recogni-tion of distinguished service to base-ball in Wisconsin.

● Being one of 14 members noted by Fond du Lac Youth Baseball for service recognition in 2012.

● Having a fi eld named in his honor, and, of course, having a youth baseball team named after him.

Dave also was honored by Mercury Marine with a proclama-tion that read “The Spirit of David Andrew” during his years employed with that company. Dave Andrew will be remembered as a coach, director and supervisor of Fond du Lac Youth Baseball, friend and mentor to many.

Card playing is one of his favor-ite pastimes, as well as watching sporting events on TV, especially the Brewers. According to Mary, once a year the whole family attends a Brewers game.

“It’s a family event and we do the whole shebang … tailgate and every-thing!” said Mary.

Both Dave and Mary enjoy watch-ing their grandchildren play in sports, no matter where they live. Their grandkids are scattered around Fond du Lac, Appleton, Madison and even Jackson, Fla., where they go once a year. No matter if the grandkids are into baseball, soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, track or cross country, Dave and Mary make it a priority to cheer them on.

It is evident Fond du Lac Youth Baseball is a big thing here in Fond du Lac, and Dave intends to keep the program going strong. ✦

If you want make a gift or leave an inheritance to someone with a physical or mental disability,

you must plan carefully. Many individuals with special needs receive government benefi ts which place severe fi nancial restrictions on eligibility. If a gift or inheritance causes the individual to exceed those limits, the benefi ts will be interrupted. There is, however, a solution to this problem. Instead of leaving

the inheritance directly to the special needs individual, you could instead leave it to a special needs trust. Assets held in this type of trust are not considered as belonging to the individual, or “countable,” in determining fi nancial eligibility. The trust is a completely separate entity. The individual is the benefi ciary, but he or she does not have an actual ownership interest in the trust funds. However, the sole purpose of the trust is to provide the benefi ciary with items or

care over and above what the government benefi ts provide. If certain medical treatments or equipment are not covered by benefi ts, the trust could pay for them. Moreover, the trust can pay for things which are not medically necessary, but which would enrich the disabled individual’s life, such as alternative health care, education expenses, summer camp, travel (including

a companion, if necessary), furniture and electronic or computer equipment.

A special needs trust may be created and funded during your lifetime or upon your death. Once created, the trust may also receive funds from other family members as well. Used properly, a special needs trust can be a wonderful tool to enrich the life of an individual with special needs.

Medicare does not cover most dental care includ-ing dental procedures,

such as cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions, dentures, dental plates, or other dental devices. Medicare Part A will pay for certain dental services that you get when you're in a hospital; however, that cover-age is very limited. Due to the lack of Medicare coverage, many older Americans go without dental care.

The Affordable Care Act offers premium tax credits to help low-income people purchase health insurance. However, the subsidies cannot be used to purchase dental coverage except as an add-on to health coverage. About 1.4 million Americans have purchased dental coverage on health insurance exchanges since January 2014 when the law took full effect.

No new dental benefit require-ments were included for adults covered by Medicaid. Although the ACA does not make Medicaid dental coverage mandatory for adults, it gives states that have chosen to expand Medicaid a potential finan-cial incentive to include dental benefits. In Wisconsin, Medicaid dental coverage for adults includes pain relief, infection treatment, tooth restoration, cleanings, fluo-ride treatments, crowns and fill-ings, X-rays, root canals, dentures and implants apart from preventive dental care checkups.

Another barrier to dental care for low-income adults is the relatively low reimbursement rates offered by state Medicaid programs. Extensive paperwork and oversight

Dental care, coverage difficult for many adults

also limit the number of dentists willing to take Medicaid patients (the ACA calls for even more inten-sive oversight and audits). The result is poor access to preven-tive care for low-income Medicaid beneficiaries in much of the coun-try, ultimately resulting in higher overall costs.

Americans spend as much to treat dental disease — almost all of it preventable — as on the treatment of all cancers combined accord-ing to DentaQuest, a research and advocacy organization and admin-istrator of dental insurance plans, including Medicaid.

Free or reduced dental ServiceSWisconsin’s Department of

Health Services provides a list on its website of free or reduced dental clinics that can be accessed here: dhs.wisconsin.gov/guide/free-dental.htm.

One such program is the Donated Dental Service. The program is for people who are unable to afford necessary dental treatment because of low income which is linked to a permanent disability, chronic illness, or advanced age (65 or older). Dentists involved in this program agree to volunteer their time to serve this population.

A person needing dental services without coverage may also consider reaching out to local dentistry schools or area technical colleges to see if they offer reduced services with their students.

When you were a child you could eat anything you wanted

without worrying about the result. The calories never stuck around.

Now, not so much. You can still enjoy your

snacks, including many of the familiar tastes you grew up with. If you’re ready to eat smarter while enjoying the flavors you’ve always loved, incorporate these healthy substitutes into your diet and you’ll feel like a kid again.

ditch the doughnutYou’ve heard the logic that

says you’re better off eating the doughnut than eating nothing because it jumpstarts your metabolism. But you know what’s even better than eating the doughnut? Eating just about anything besides the doughnut. If you need your morning carbs, replace that doughnut with an English muffin for a similar texture. Cover it in jelly so you don’t lose out on the sweet taste and then slowly work your way down to the low-sugar jam for an even healthier snack.

Sayonara, Snack cakeS.

Snack cakes come in many shapes and sizes, but they’re all essentially the same: cake exterior, cream filling interior and they don't spoil. But you still enjoy them. So how do you avoid them? The next time you’re in the mood for a snack cake, make a smart replacement and try some low-fat angel food cake instead. Top it with healthy strawberries and low-fat whipped cream and you really can have your cake and eat it, too.

chuck the chipS

Sweets are one thing but salt is another slippery slope. If you crave salty snacks, you probably find chips difficult to pass up. So don’t abandon your crunch

crush, just make sure you’re enjoying a healthy substitute. Replace those fatty chips with toasted pita chips and savory hummus and you’ll satisfy your craving without feeling remorse afterward.

chooSe the garden over greaSe

You can’t find your favorite greasy appetizers in the vending machine, but they make for dangerous happy hours. The next time you feel tempted, opt for vegetables instead. Veggies are more than just garnish in many of today’s restaurants because of smart snackers like you, so take advantage of them. Crunch a carrot or savor a celery stick dipped in low fat ranch dressing and you’ll be thankful you did once happy hour is over.

So long Sugary drinkS

You may think it's impossible to get through your day without your favorite sugary-sweet lemonade or other soft drink, but your body might be happier if you did. When you feel the desire for a sugary beverage, quench it with Good Earth Tea instead. Good Earth Tea’s Citrus Kiss, for example, is a naturally sweet, great alternative to lemonade. Bizzie Gold, celebrity trainer and founder of Buti Yoga, concurs: “Giving water a flavor boost with bold teas is a great way to ensure you drink plenty of it throughout the day. Healthier, flavorful beverages like Good Earth Tea let you reap the benefits of water with each sip.”

Over the past ten years I have led many tours to Europe and enjoyed every

one. However, not everyone can travel to Europe, but one day tours can become a fun alternative.

One of my favorite places is Galena, Ill. This historical town used to be a boomtown along the Mississippi River in the 1800s. It was also home to President Ulysses S. Grant and eight Civil War generals. Both Presidents Lincoln and Douglas stayed at the De Soto Hotel, which is still open for business on Main Street. Over 85 percent of the buildings in Galena are on the National Register of Historic Designation. One of my favorite memories of Galena was taking a “cemetery walk” on a fall day. Local actors stepped out from behind gravestones dressed in

period costumes and shared their life stories. I still recall the original owner of the De Soto Hotel led wagon trains out west a number of times.

Another favorite day tour of mine is the Lyric Opera House in Chicago. Fond du Lac has been home to cello player Laura Deming who

One day tourshas played in the Lyric orchestra for over thirty years. Last spring Laura asked if she could join our group on our return trip. We all ate at the Chicago French Market a block from the opera house before departing. Laura walked with us

wheeling her cello in a case down the street! She promised when I returned with another group she would give us a backstage tour. I am taking her up on her offer for our December 9 tour to see the opera “The Merry Widow.”
