Technique Exploration and Practice

Page 4: Experience Generator

For the start of the studio, basic preparation skills (writing script, drawing storyboard), video-camera using skills (position, focus), and movie editing (transition, speed) were practised through “make a tea at home“ and stop motion video.

Through tea-making video, I played with all kinds of techniques and found fascina-tion in framing, sequence and details.

Experiencing the Home

Page 10: Experience Generator

Home is a place closely related to emotions.

For the result of my exploration at home, I decided not only to do some renovation for the physical space, but also to improve the living condition emotionally, and in the end express it with a short movie.

The rendering of heaven-like atmosphere, to show my hatred of current living place and desire of a peaceful home, was the essence of my home movie.

Page 15: Experience Generator
Page 16: Experience Generator

The model interior surface was covered by tissue papers which soften the space with its texture and lighten the space up with its pure white colour.

White is the fundamental colour tone of all the scenes for its purity and peaceful-ness.

Page 17: Experience Generator
Page 18: Experience Generator

The strong comparison of colour also helped building strong atmosphere in the model.Black and white: dull, helplessColoured: alive, hopeful

Lighting and Sound Design

Page 20: Experience Generator

The process of doing lighting and sound for me is the process of do-ing all kinds of experiments and choosing the best fit. Unexpected outcome sometimes is great source of inspiration.

1. research about Verdensteatret and their work “Louder“, ”Fotellerorkestret”, etc. 2. exploration of natural and artificial lighting at home3. experiments of lighting both in room and model4. for the outcome of lighting on wall texture in the model stood out, more foot-ages were shot5. coloured lighting were tested in both real and unreal space with the help of colour filters 6. inspiration for final brief (unused)7. notes about different methods of making sound (existing and artificial)8. rope used for making a part of the soundtrack

Page 23: Experience Generator
Page 24: Experience Generator
Page 25: Experience Generator

The magnificent lighting effect on texture and the shadow it makes fascinated me. The surface of model respond well to even delicate movement of light, and the consistency of material using do contribute to space atmosphere.

Page 26: Experience Generator
Page 27: Experience Generator

Various colours of lighting not only change the hue of the space but also create strong feelings in the area. Especially in the room, a different hue immediately removes the familiarity I used to have in the place.

Daily sound

For my home is located in the city, so the daily sound around it is mainly traffics. (walking, traffic, instruction sound, bikes, trams, lifts)

Artificial sound For artificial sound, vari-ous materials and their combinations (tissues, mug, iron spoon, water drops, etc.) were used to make special effects.

Additionally, I recorded singing several keys with my own voice and did experiments of chang-ing their speed, which turned out to be the sim-ple highlight of sound practice.

Immersive Space

Page 32: Experience Generator

After exploring the potential of sound and lighting, a complete video filming an installation in the the home was asked to be made, in order to show the organisation capacity of materials and tech-niques learnt, and to learn more about home.

Install white plastic table cloth on the surface of room interior

Page 36: Experience Generator
Page 37: Experience Generator

Although a small room’s not an ideal place to live, but it on the other hand is a perfect place for large scale installation, and it respond better to any change in the area. The table cloth with its pale colour and light transmission properties man-aged to create a scary atmosphere. The sense of self-glowing object was made by putting the light behind the cloth for it blurred the light shape. A horrible sound-track of waterphone was found to accompany the view. Above all, a scary room was built.

Page 38: Experience Generator

The change of light colour in the room;Red was the main colour for the bloody impression it gives

Page 39: Experience Generator

Footages of details were added in the video to make the scenes real and diverse.A vague human shadow was also filmed to increase sense of tense as well as show the installation scale.

Castle

Page 43: Experience Generator

The main concept of the project CASTLE is to create an artistic adap-tation based on my own understanding of the idea “home” from the book (“Howl’s Moving Castle” by Diana Wynne Jones), using lighting as the dominant technique and video as media. The design mainly focuses on the flowing and magical atmosphere, and can be considered as an elementary lighting setting for stage.

Page 46: Experience Generator

The magician’s home is a place with uncertainty, secrets and mys-tery. But one thing never changes: HOME is where your HEART is.So for my notion of home:Home doesn’t need to be an entity; it can be an uncon-scious flow of emotion, a familiar picture in the mind, or a constant tone that echoes around.

Page 47: Experience Generator
Page 48: Experience Generator
Page 49: Experience Generator

As the building of atmosphere was focused on, it suits better with abstract scenes rendered by layers of colours and gentle movement in the model.

Test of lighting in the model was the main part of the whole development. Materi-als such as 4 colour gels (green, orange, blue, yellow), a lamp and 3 small torches (blue, orange, purple) were tested to make hue, shape and effects. Owe to the tracing paper, the model was like a palette which respond to most of the colour mixture and movement. After a few test, I started to film the movement accord with soundtrack and approach to the magical atmosphere.

Page 61: Experience Generator

A 3D version of columns replaced the former fake ones. The round surface reflects better to light and show different colour degrees.Footages of real scale human shadows were added in the video as abstraction of characters from the book to make it more diverse.

To bring about the elegant and mysterious atmosphere which I believe describe the emotion of home the best, I try to merge complex and confrontation into the video while it doesn’t lose its consistent flowing style.

It was an amazing experience with model and video making, and at the same time brought new meanings of home to me.

Through the whole semester, my biggest achievement was getting more patient when working. Produce, compare and check over and over again to get the best outcome.

If there’s chance, it will be great to build a larger scale of set, install lightings and perform right in front of audiences, during which more immersive experiences are generated.
