PROGRAMDATES:TheprogramwillofficiallybeginonSaturday,July4,2015inTabanan,Bali,andwillendonSaturday,July25,2015.StudentswillberesponsibleformakingtheirownairtravelarrangementsinordertoarriveattheNgurahRaiInternationalAirportinDenpasarby3:00pmonSaturday,July3,2015AshuttlepickupwillbearrangedforthestudentstotakethemtoTabana.PROGRAMOVERVIEW:ThisstudyabroadprogramiscoordinatedbytheNorthernIllinoisUniversityStudyAbroadOffice(SAO),incooperationwiththeNIUCollegeofVisualandPerformingArts,theSchoolofArt,andtheSchoolofMusic.ThecooperatingoverseasagencyistheTraditionalDanceandMusicStudio,SanggarManikGalih,inTabanan,Bali.TheprogramisinresponsetoAmericans’growingawarenessofSoutheastAsianculturesingeneralandoftheuniqueBalineseartsandtheirfunctionsintraditionalandmodern‐dayBalinesesocietyinparticular.Music,dance,andtheateralongwithartandcraftsareimportantpartsofBalineseculture.TheceremonialnatureoftheartsreflectsthemultiplelayersofreligiouspracticesandphilosophiesembeddedinacomplexsocioculturalstructureofBalinesesociety.Theinseparablerelationshipsamongtheseartsprovideavividsoundscapeandlandscapeforstudentstoexperiencethefunctionsofartsinalivingenvironment.Theartisticfieldworkexperienceswillenablestudentstoencounterfirst‐handBalineseculturalinformationandwillhelpthemtoreinforcethetheorieslearnedincoursessuchasanthropology,history,arthistory,andethnomusicology.However,previousexperienceinsuchcoursesisnotrequired.Inadditiontostudyingthearts,throughlivinginatraditionalvillagecompound,banjar,studentswillbeabletointeractwithlocalvillagers,participatein(orobserve)Odalan,“regularlyscheduledfestivalstocelebratetheanniversaryoftemples’dedication”(Dunbar‐Hall2006,62),andexaminetheBalineseculturalpracticesonadailybasisinordertogainacloseandintimatefamiliaritywiththeBalineseandtheirinvolvementwithoneanotherintheirculturalenvironment.SinceBaliisoneofthemostpopulartourismdestinationsintheworld,studentsinthisprogramarealsoencouragedtointeractwithothertouriststogaininsightsintotheimpactoftourismonthedevelopmentofBalinesecultureintheglobalizedera(Dunbar‐Hall,55).PROGRAMOBJECTIVES:Throughthisprogram,participantswillexperienceanewculturebyinteractingwiththelocalpeopleandgainingknowledgeabouttheinseparablerelationshipofBalinesearts

Mr.Lasmawanhastraveledthroughouttheworld,includingBelgium,France,England,Singapore,JapanandMexico.HeisaprolificcomposerwhotaughtBalinesemusicatSTSIfrom1983until1990,whenhewasinvitedtoSanDiegoStateUniversitytoteachJavaneseandBalinesemusic.LivinginColoradosince1993asanArtist‐in‐ResidencewiththeGamelanTunasMekar,healsoteachesBalinesegamelanatColoradoCollegeinColoradoSprings,NaropaUniversityinBoulder,Colorado,theUniversityofWyominginLaramie,andtheUniversityofColorado,Boulder.WheninBali,hecontinuestoplayaleadroleinthedevelopmentofhishomevillage’smusicalorchestras,whichincludeamen’sgamelanangklungandachildren’sorchestra.
IGustiNgurahKertayuda,DanceIGustiNgurahKertayudaisagraduateoftheConservatoryforTraditionalPerformingArts(KOKAR)inDenpasar,Indonesia.Hehastaughtandperformedtraditionalandmoderndanceandgamelansincethe1970s,bothnationallyandinternationallyfornumerousdignitariesandfestivals.SincehisrelocationtotheUnitedStatesin1989,heservedastheartisticandchoreographydirectorfortheIndonesianConsulateGeneralofChicagoandhasjustretiredfromthispositioninDecember2012.HeisnowthedirectorofIndonesianDanceofIllinois,anon‐profitorganizationinthegreaterChicagoareapromotingIndonesianculturethroughdanceandmusic.

CourseDescription:ThisstudyabroadprogramiscoordinatedbytheNorthernIllinoisUniversityStudyAbroadOffice(SAO),incooperationwiththeNIUCollegeofVisualandPerformingArts,theSchoolofArt,andtheSchoolofMusic.ThecooperatingoverseasagencyistheTraditionalDanceandMusicStudio,SanggarManikGalih,inTabanan,Bali.TheprogramisinresponsetoAmericans’growingawarenessofSoutheastAsianculturesingeneralandoftheuniqueBalineseartsandtheirfunctionsintraditionalandmodern‐dayBalinesesocietyinparticular.Music,dance,andtheateralongwithartandcraftsareimportantpartsofBalineseculture.TheceremonialnatureoftheartsreflectsthemultiplelayersofreligiouspracticesandphilosophiesembeddedinacomplexsocioculturalstructureofBalinesesociety.Theinseparablerelationshipsamongtheseartsprovideavividsoundscapeandlandscapeforstudentstoexperiencethefunctionsofartsinalivingenvironment.Theartisticfieldworkexperienceswillenablestudentstoencounterfirst‐handBalineseculturalinformationandwillhelpthemtoreinforcethetheorieslearnedincoursessuchasanthropology,history,arthistory,andethnomusicology.However,previousexperienceinsuchcoursesisnotrequired.Inadditiontostudyingthearts,throughlivinginatraditionalvillagecompound,banjar,studentswillbeabletointeractwithlocalvillagers,participatein(orobserve)Odalan,“regularlyscheduledfestivalstocelebratetheanniversaryoftemples’dedication”(Dunbar‐Hall2006,62),andexaminetheBalineseculturalpracticesonadailybasisinordertogainacloseandintimatefamiliaritywiththeBalineseandtheirinvolvementwithoneanotherintheirculturalenvironment.SinceBaliisoneofthemostpopulartourismdestinationsintheworld,studentsinthisprogramarealsoencouragedtointeractwithothertouriststogaininsightsintotheimpactoftourismonthedevelopmentofBalinesecultureintheglobalizedera(Dunbar‐Hall,55).CourseObjectives:Throughthisprogram,participantswillexperienceanewculturebyinteractingwiththelocalpeopleandgainingknowledgeabouttheinseparablerelationshipofBalinesearts(music,dance,crafts,andvisualarts),religion,andculture.Thisknowledgewillbeacquiredthroughthefollowing:
