• Meeting of the NSF National Committee on Nanotechnology
(NNC) on identification of need of a policy
• Appointment of a Policy Sub-Committee (by the Board of
Management)
• Preparation of first draft by the Sub-Committee
• Stakeholders’ meeting (to obtain views on the first draft)
• Advertising second draft in newspapers, web and circulation
among relevant institutions for public opinion (paper
advertisement in all three languages and 1 month given to
comment)

Challenges
(a) Improving the public understanding and acceptance on
nanotechnology through debate.
(b) Identifying and addressing ethical issues related to the application
of nanotechnology in all areas, especially in medicine and electronics.
(c) Insufficient knowledge on effects of nanomaterials on people and
the environment.
(d) Integrating nanotechnology associated risk assessment into
research agenda.
(e) Harmonization of the Sri Lankan regulatory system with
international regulatory systems with respect to safety, quality and
trade.

• Establish mechanisms for early identification of potential
health risks and safety hazards and any environmental
damage resulting from applications of nanotechnologies.
• Use Life-cycle Assessment tools to determine the impacts
of nanotechnology products and processes from
production to disposal.
• Generate new data specific to nanotoxicology and eco-
toxicology including risk-assessment analyses.

POLICY IMPLEMENTATION
The inter-ministerial committee on Science,
Technology and Innovation chaired by the
Head of State will direct the implementation of
the National Nanotechnology Policy through the
National Nanotechnology Council which will be
appointed by the
Hon. Minister in-charge of promotion,
coordination, monitoring and regulation of
nanotechnology
