BOBST EXPERTFOLD 80 machine, the most recent creation of the famous BOBST producer, is a testimony to this fact and is permitting us to emboss Braille code on the boxes, according to the European rules and regulations.

In Romania there are about 80,000 blind persons belonging to the severe and medium categories of visual impairment. Among these rights is legally regulated for that to be available packs with embossed Braille code.

These operations can be performed only with special equipment that guarantees embossing Braille respecting rules on point height and Braille font.

There are several empirical technics used for embossing Braille Code (the traditional punch example), but they do not allow blind reading the code, it is just a way to circumvent the EU rules.

The Braille alphabet

The system was created by Louis Braille in 1825. The system is based on a matrix of six-points arranged in two columns of three points.

Braille is a writing system used by people with visual impairments. The letters are composed of protruding points which can be felt with the fingers. The A to Z letters each have corresponding signs in Braille.

Marburg Medium Braille Font Standard

There are many specifications for setting braille type. However, the PharmaBraille range ofbraille fonts comply with the Marburg Medium specification, as recommended by European and North American standards for pharmaceutical packaging and labels.

The Marburg Medium Braille Specification

• The dot diameter is 1.3 - 1.6 mm (Ø); • The dot spacing is 2.5 mm from dot centre

to dot centre (a or b); • The character spacing is 6 mm from dot

centre to dot centre (c); • The word spacing is 12 mm, with one space

between them (d). • The line spacing is 10 mm (e).Tolerance: ±0.1mm

University of Birmingham conducted a study of standard Braille, in which involving respondents Braille users (blind). The mean age was between 15 and 77 years.

Respondents were classified into three age groups: • under 21 years (N=11); • between 21 and 59 years (N=16); • over 60 years (N=18).

For embossed materials the target Braille cell dot height shall be 0.2 mm not more than 5 % of Braille cell dot height measurements lower than 0.12 mm and not more than 1 % of Braille cell dot height measurements lower than 0.10 mm.

For other materials the target Braille dot cell height shall be 0.20 mm with not more than 5 % of Braille cell dot height measurements lower than 0.16 mm.

Character sets supported: EU 27, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Latin, Cyrillic, Greek,

symbols: / % ‰.
