Those active on the ground confirm the fact: Wallonia is their logistics region
That independent studies place Wallonia at the top of the list of attractive regions for developing logistics activities is one thing, but for logistics investors to confirm this is quite another. The Region has made logistics one of its development priorities, but it is those actively involved on the ground who prove that this strategy is well founded.
In the following pages, the first of a series of themed dossiers on logistics in Wallonia, you will discover why fifteen well known industrial groups and logistics suppliers have set up their bases in Wallonia, and the reasons why they are satisfied at having done so. We have not been able to quote all of them, starting with the Swedish H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) group which is in the process of installing its new EDC at Ghlin, near Mons.
You will discover that this logistics presence is not mere chance, but that the various advantages which make of Wallonia a primary logistics region, were determi-ning factors in their choice. And all of these witness statements serve to reinforce this simple fact: the prac-tice confirms the theory.
And very often, to finish, you will find out via a new project to what degree these players active on the ground intend to intensify their presence in Wallonia in the months and years to come. This presence does us a great honour, and we wish to share it with you.
Michel Van Liefferinge,
President of the Board, Logistics in Wallonia.

Founded in 1665 by Colbert in order, principally,
to produce the Hall of Mirrors at the Chateau
of Versailles, Saint-Gobain is one of the largest
French groups. It operates around four centres of
activity including those of high performance inno-
vative materials and glass. It employs more than
200,000 persons in sixty countries. Saint-Gobain
Autover, a department of Saint-Gobain Sekurit,
the world’s largest producer of laminated glass,
specialises in the sale of glass for cars, trucks
and buses destined for the replacement market.
Saint-Gobain Autover also distributes all of the
peripheral accessories - clips, rain detectors -
and the materials required for installation.
In September 2001 Saint-Gobain Autover
Distribution chose the Bastogne industrial park to
locate its principal distribution platform for Euro-
pean countries. Overseas countries are supplied us-
ing containers from the port of Antwerp. «We chose
Bastogne», explains Thierry Amerlynck, managing
director, «because the region is ideally located with
regard to our clients and suppliers, and we have
the advantage of an efficient road infrastructure.
On top of this, we can call upon quality, skilled and
hard-working personnel. We employ from 120 to
160 depending on season.»
courageux. Nous employons de 120 à 160 personnes
selon les saisons.»

Many people are unaware that the Bax-
ter site in Lessines is the location of the
pharmaceutical group’s European Dis-
tribution Centre. And that Baxter is far more than
just the intravenous solution we may receive when
in hospital. Since its arrival in Belgium in 1954, this
American pharmaceutical enterprise has never
stopped growing. Its principal activity lies in the
administration of medicines destined for hospital
institutions and patients at home. Baxter is also the
leading company in Belgium in the domain of im-
portant treatments for patients suffering from
serious illnesses.
Today, the group employs some 2,000 per-
sons spread across 70,000 m². The choice of Les-
sines was made in 1970 with the construction of a
first production site, and in 1996 with the establish-
ment of a European Distribution Centre. But it is the
company’s technical expertise, its productivity levels
and a strategic European location which make the
difference today. The granting of ‘Objective 1’ Eu-
ropean structural finds for Hainaut province was a
determining factor in the group’s decision to invest
in Lessines rather than in Alsace. In June 2010 the
Baxter group inaugurated new buildings in Braine-
l’Alleud, where the European research and develop-
ment headquarters are now located.
talisation. Depuis son arrivée en Belgique en 1954,
l’entreprise pharmaceutique américaine n’a cessé
de croître. Sa principale activité réside dans l’admi-
nistration de médicaments à destination des institu-
tions hospitalières et des patients à domicile. Baxter

I f Blount Europe SA, a division of American group
Blount Inc. has installed its European Distribu-
tion Centre in Courcelles, this is amongst others
for reasons of… history. Blount has in fact had a
presence in Wallonia since 1967, and there was no
question for the mother country that it would leave
a region with which it had always been entirely
satisfied! Two years ago, WDP, a closed-end property
investment company, came to an agreement with
Blount for the rental of a 10,000 m² depot at
Courcelles, some 30 km south of Brussels. At the
same time, WDP took over the former industrial site
at Nivelles, which had become too small to respond
to the needs of a modern industrial group work-
ing with products of differing sizes, formats and
weights.
Courcelles has become the main centre for
the marketing and distribution of chainsaw
chains and the various accessories which the com-
pany (under its Oregon brand) supplies to the for-
estry industry in the countries of Western, Central
and Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Ten
metre high racking and 13 loading bays (against 2
in Nivelles) make the operators’ task much easier.
The installation of the European platform coincided
with the desire of the group to improve its efficien-
cy at the production and logistics levels.
S i Blount Europe SA, division du groupe améri-
cain Blount Inc., a installé son centre européen

Rudi Willemans, head of department: «The
Ghislenghien centre takes care of the storage and
preparation of drinks, of recycling, of sorting empty
returned bottles, of bottling the wine and milling
the coffee. The choice of Ghislenghien can be
explained by its central position in Wallonia, its pro-
ximity to Flanders and to our other distribution cen-
tres, as well as its accessibility by the E429 and the
other Walloon motorways. To this has to be added
the availability of land, the subsidies obtained - par-
ticularly from Europe - and the availability of quali-
fied personnel». These are advantages which have
visibly convinced the group as a third distribution

with a new production site at Leuze.

Michele Bosa, General Manager
A ctive in the design and production of con-
tact lenses, American group CooperVision
set up its European Distribution Centre in the
Liège region in February 2006. This new European
hub represented an investment of 5 million Euros
for the third largest contact lens manufacturer in
the world, and led to the creation of around seven-
ty jobs in the first phase. Today, 135 persons work
in the 6,500 m² centre, located in buildings rented
from Vincent Logistics in Hauts-Sarts.
The main reasons why the American manage-
ment was convinced by Liège are to be found in the
central position it occupies in Europe and its many
means of communications. Assistance and subsidies
offered by the Walloon Region for the creation
of jobs also played a part in tipping the balance.
Another explanation for the interest shown by
CooperVision is the skill of the people the compa-
ny’s management met. Marketing its lenses across
the globe, CooperVision has been able to shorten its
delivery times to European clients, and particularly
to northern continental Europe. It is a little early to
talk of it, but an expansion of the centre is being
envisaged.
«Liège is the primary logistics re-gion of Europe, and this is one of the reasons why we came here.»

I n 2010, Dow Corning announced a number of
investments in Hainaut totalling over 70 million
Euros, of which around 35 million are destined
for a low energy consumption, 32,000 m² European
Distribution Centre. Constructed at Feluy with the
objective of increasing distribution capacity and
optimising client service, the distribution centre
will be located on a 17 hectare site, close to the
Seneffe production unit. It will be used for storing
and handling the production of Dow Corning in
Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as other
regions of the world. The construction is scheduled
to be completed by the end of autumn 2011.
The second investment involves installations and
equipment with a value of around 36 million Euros
destined to facilitate the research and produc-
tion of silicon-based materials at the Dow Corning
European headquarters and at the Seneffe produc-
tion unit. This investment increases the capacity for
innovation involving a wide range of clients using
silicon-based materials, while also bringing to the
fore the company’s research capabilities in the do-
main of solar energy in Europe. The construction,
which started in July 2010, is scheduled to be com-
pleted by autumn 2011.
«Dow Corning is comfortable in Hainaut: located in the Centre, the company is to invest more than 70 million Euros.»

In 2009, the group opened a European Distribu-

solution close to the factory, but also to have good
connections for import and export. We therefore
reached an agreement with Intertrans (Ziegler
network), which placed at our disposal a 5,500 m2
warehouse», explains Annick Salami.
Along with the shipment of products manu-
factured in Welkenraedt to the final client, the EDC
has developed a system for the delivery of spare
parts coming from several of the group’s factories,
and even for reconditioning compressors produced
in Ireland. Europe absorbs 70% of activities, with
the rest being exported to the Middle East or Asia.
«The proximity of Liege Airport, for example, has
enabled us to optimise the delivery of parts, and
this EDC also helps us to provide a professional sup-
ply chain for our clients», Annick Salami goes on to
explain. She would also like to develop, via
Welkenraedt, further synergies with the Irish and
Czech factories of the Emerson group.
«The proximity of Liege Airport is important to us, and we are also envisaging working with the port of Liege for containerised exports.»

Farnell has been located in Wallonia since
September 2002. For several reasons, as Eric
Lacroix, Distribution Centre Manager, explains:
«Wallonia is well located geographically, where
the continental market is concerned. The European
Distribution Centre we have set up here enables
us to be close to our clients and to operate a ‘next
day delivery’ service even with late orders. The just-
in-time aspect is essential for us. We also have the
advantage of good road connections and a quality
workforce. Not forgetting the availability of sites
and the attractive building rental rates. And finally,
the regional and European authorities also support
us in developing our company.»
The company does not regret its choice at all,
therefore, and is continuing its growth to such a
point that the continental activity (Farnell is a British
company) is now more important than its British
operations. And Farnell is continuing to invest in
Wallonia. Eric Lacroix: «Over the next three years
we are going to invest four million Euros, again
with the aid of the region and Europe. This will
enable us to perpetuate our tool. Where employ-
ment is concerned, you should know that we moved
up from 200 to 230 persons during the crisis.»
Farnell est établi en Wallonie depuis septembre
2002. Pour plusieurs raisons comme l’explique
Eric Lacroix, Distribution Centre Manager : «La
‘next day delivery’ malgré des commandes tardives.
‘anglaise’. Et Farnell continue à investir en Wallonie.
Eric Lacroix : «Nous allons investir 4 millions d’euros

The site has a preparation platform which directs
the parcels according to their weight and volume

«Wallonia», explains Jean-Michel Colnot,
Operations Director, «is ideally located for
shipping by road to our two major markets, France

Liège and Brussels. The region has the support of
the public authorities and all of the workforce we
need is available. Our teams work 7 days a week,
which enables us to handle an average of 4,000 or-

L yreco, the largest B2B office equipment distri-
butor in Europe, has brought its Benelux logis-
tics activities together in a 32,000 m² distribu-
tion centre at Liège. This family business, founded
in Valenciennes in 1926, began to take off at the
beginning of the 80’s, in particular thanks to its de-
sire to offer its clients an extremely high service le-
vel. With a presence in 27 countries, Lyreco employs
10,000 and turns over 2.2 billion Euros.
Rather than locating their new distribution
centre in Flanders or the Netherlands, the Lyreco
management decided to opt for Wallonia. First of
all, they speak the same language, and the cultures
are similar. And while the subsidies offered by the
Walloon Region played a part in the decision, the
excellent geographical location of Liège for logistics
and the proximity of the foreign subcontractors also
had an influence. Without forgetting the human
aspect, with personnel which is both available and
suitably trained.
The open-mindedness of all those involved at a
local level was also a determining factor, whether
the Walloon Region, the AWEX, the Forem, the Spi
or the town of Herstal. Lyreco does not hesitate to
express its entire satisfaction when it explains why it
chose to locate in Liège!

along with managing the integration of the various
software programmes.
PFSweb numbers amongst its clients some
of the largest groups on the international
scene in domains such as textiles, luxury goods, cos-
metics and multi-media. It is not by chance that in
1999 the European Distribution Centre was loca-
ted at the heart of the ‘logistics banana’: a central
motorway network which is less congested than in
other regions, an attractive price per square metre
for land, subsidies granted by the Walloon Region,
quality and available skilled and non-skilled work-
force etc… At the end of 2011, PFSweb will confirm
its choice of Wallonia by doubling the surface area
of its distribution centre, with the creation of new
jobs key to this.

Unis», explique Jean-Claude Bury, l’administrateur-

A présent,
nos containers arrivent directement par le terminal
ferroviaire d’Athus.

the increase in sales. The group decided to set up in
Aubange, in the heart of the European Develop-

«The location of Aubange facilitates the
transport of merchandise and avoids having to
use the Brussels Ring which was often the cause of
delays in shipments to the rest of Europe. Now, our
containers arrive directly by the Athus rail terminal.
The proximity of this terminal and the price of land

I t is in Milmort, in the Hauts Sarts business park
near Liège, that American shoe brand Skechers
decided to establish its European Distribution
Centre in 2002, in a 22,000 m² depot. The merchan-
dise arrives via the port of Antwerp, before being
stored and prepared at Milmort and then shipped
to the whole of Europe.
As this business park offers expansion possibili-
ties, Skechers has doubled the size of its European
Distribution Centre since 2009, and it now extends
to 45,000 m². Employment has also been greatly in-
creased, from 8 persons in 2002 to 150 in 2011.
The second depot was built as an extension of
the first. One is destined to receive products, the
other to ship them. «The Liège region offers the
necessary workforce possibilities», explains Sophie
Houtmeyers, the centre’s head. «The number of
workers varies according to season. To cope with
seasonal peaks in activity, we recruit our personnel

a climate which encourages human relations and a
dialogue between people. As for the geographical
location, it is ideal because it gives us easy access to

Niky Terzakis : «Nous allons no-
tamment développer les liaisons intercontinentales
au départ de Liège. En particulier sur l’Asie : la Chine,
Singapour, Hong Kong, New Dehli, etc. C’est là que
se situe la croissance actuellement. Par ailleurs, nous
allons acheter cette année trois Boeing 777 très long
courrier, très silencieux et à faible consommation. Ils
seront livrés en juillet prochain.»

I t was in March 1998 that TNT Express decided to
open a European hub at Liège. The basis for this
decision was strong growth combined with a lack
of space at the Cologne site where the company
had been located until then. But that’s not all. Niky
Terzakis, Managing Director: «We wanted to create
a super-hub and the Liège site won out following an
analysis based on 57 key criteria. On top of this, the
local authorities demonstrated a genuine desire to
develop cargo activities. And here we found a site
which enabled us to expand. Wallonia is attractive
because of its location, at the crossroads of several
major countries. The region has a rich history and a
high quality of life, which contribute to attracting
foreign investors.»
On the development side, the company has
a full agenda. Niky Terzakis: «We are in parti-
cular going to develop intercontinental connections
from Liège. And especially to Asia: China, Singapore,
Hong Kong, New Delhi etc. This is where growth is
being seen at the moment. And additionally, this
year we are buying three new Boeing 747 ultra-long
haul aircraft, very quiet and with low fuel consump-
tion. They will be delivered in July.»
«The Liège site won out following an analysis based on 57 key criteria.»
