THINGS FLOAT OR SINK?”

• THEY HAVE A CLEAR TITLE.

• IDEAS ARE GROUPED IN PARAGRAPHS

• THE FIRST PARAGRAPH INTRODUCES THE SUBJECT AND IS GENERAL.

• THEY USE CAUSE/EFFECT CONJUNCTIONS (THEN, AS A CONSEQUENCE, SO, IF, BECAUSE, AS A RESULT,

THEREFORE)

• THEY OFTEN USE TIME OPENERS (FIRST, THEN, FOLLOWING, FINALLY).

• THEY ARE WRITTEN IN THE PRESENT TENSE.

• THEY ARE WRITTEN IN 3RD PERSON.

• THEY USE TECHNICAL VOCABULARY THAT IS SPECIFIC TO THE TOPIC AND MAY BE EXPLAINED IN A GLOSSARY.

CAUSE AND EFFECT – WHAT IS IT?

• CAUSE = AN EVENT OR REASON THAT MAKES SOMETHING HAPPEN. IT SHOWS WHY

SOMETHING HAPPENS (EXAMPLE: IT STARTED TO RAIN…)

• EFFECT = THE RESULT OF THE CAUSE. IT SHOWS WHAT HAPPENS (EXAMPLE: SO I HAD TO GO

INSIDE.)

• CAUSE + EFFECT = EXPLAINS WHAT HAPPENS AND WHY IT HAPPENS.
