II- Computer Networks2) Characteristics

a) Connection method

Wired communication

Wireless communication

transmission of data through cables example : optical Fiber cable, Ethernet cable …

Wired communication

Wirelesscommunication

Transmission of data using radio waves, satellites…

b) Geographic scale :

The whole world

A town, city or campus

A home, office, or building

Local Area Network (LAN)

Wide Area Network (WAN)

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

The computer network is characterized by the geographic area between computers. So networks can be classified as: • LAN Local Area Network

• MAN Metropolitan Area Network

• WAN Wide Area Network

DATA

The strength of data flow from computer to another is called Data Transfer rate

1 2

c) The data transfer rate (DTR):

Activity: Fill in the blanks using words from the list:

the amount of ……………..that is moved from one place to another in a given………….. It’s often expressed in KB per second (KB/s) or MB/s. Shorter is the ………………., and better is the quality of the line so, …………will be the DTR

distance – stronger – digital data - data time

the amount of digital data that is moved from one place to another in a given time.

It’s often expressed in KB per second (KB/s) or MB/s.

“Shorter is the distance, and better is the quality of the line so, strongerwill be the DTR”

3)Types

• LAN: Local Area Network:

Network of computers in a …………geographic area (home, college, office…) so it provides transmission with a ………….. speed

• WAN: Wide Area Network:

Network of computers in a …………geographic area (countries, towns, …) so it provides transmission with a ………….. speed

• LAN: Local Area Network:

Network of computers in a …………geographic area (home, college, office…) so it provides transmission with a ………….. speed

• WAN: Wide Area Network:

Network of computers in a …………geographic area (countries, towns, …) so it provides transmission with a ………….. speed

III-Local Area Network

Use words to present LAN:sharing resources – close proximity- Interconnected –exchanging data - useful for - such as- like – (home, school or office) - (files, printers or applications) -group of computers.

LAN is an interconnected groupof computers in a closeproximity such as home , schoolor office useful for sharingresources like files, printers orapplications and for exchangingdata.

Anything that comes from a computer or device will be sent out to the others.

Sends Data to Computer or device that needs or request it

III-Local Area Network3) How to configure a LAN a) Setup the IP address

III-Local Area Network

• IP address:

is a numerical address assigned to each computer participating in a computer network to indicate where is it.

So how to setup an IP address to a computer.

•Go to control panel

•Click Network And Internet

•Click Network And Sharing Center

•Click change Adapter Setting

•Right click on Local Area Connection

•Go to properties.

•Double click Internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Or click properties

•Click Use the following IP address

• IP address: write 172.16.102….

•Subnet mask: Just click on it; it will automatically generate (Default-255.255.0.0)

•Validate

III-Local Area Network3) How to configure a LAN

b) Create a WorkGroup:

• It is a collection of computers on a local area network (LAN) that share common resources like printers ,files …

•Workgroups are used for small networks

Workgroup

•Go to Computer

• Right click to blank space

• Click on the Proprieties

• Click on Change settings

• Click on ‘Change’ button

• Fill The Fields (Computer name –Workgroup name)

• Validate

• Restart your computer

Exercise

• 172.12.0.1

• 54.22.300.5

• 125.ff.51f.4

• 155.45.55

• 175.2.3.6

• 0.45.45.5

Pick out the wrong IP address

• Right-click the item you want to share

• Choose Share with, and then click Specific people.

• In the File Sharing wizard:

Click the arrow next to the text box, click Everyone fromthe list, and then click Add.

• Under the Permission Level column, select one of thefollowing options:

• Read. Recipients can open—but not modify or delete—the file.

• Read/Write. Recipients can open, modify, or delete the file.

How to share document

How to change the share nameHow to change the sharing name (Not the folder name) of a shared folder

Right-click the folder’s icon.Select Properties.Select the Sharing tab.

Click the “Advanced Sharing” button.

Click Add and enter the name of the share you’d like to use.

Select the default name from the drop-down list and click Remove.

IV- Exploitation of basic services of a LAN2)Printer sharing

Sharing printer is the way that a group of ……………computers can use a …………… ……………to one of them:
