Interview with ownerDirector
David GordonThis was a hour conversation with David Gordon. He gave me a some great advice, as well as agreeing to be a validator.
When talking to David one of the main things we spoke about was the perception of the refuse lorry, and changing the publics view of the lorry. As he feels that at the moment it has a bad reputation of being grubby and dirty, though it does an incredibly important job. He suggests design a refuse lorry that looks more approachable, giving it a cleaner look as well as using new technology to improve the overall perception when people see a refuse lorry.
I mentioned in the interview the reason I choose this project, which was I saw a lorry struggling to manoeuvre around the back streets. This is something he agreed with, and said its something he sees where he lives. One suggestion he had was reducing the rear overhand at the back if you could, though this is an aspect that would be difficult to change. I suggested a few ideas to him such as a traffic light system for drivers, so it can better inform other motorists of whats happening. He then expand on this by suggesting the use of a timer, this way other motorists would know how long they will have to wait. Also proximity sensors could be something to explore, this could improve safety for cyclists, people walking and another vehicles. One last point I made was the cost of this vehicle. David suggested I design the perfect Refuse lorry, then look at costs afterwards because otherwise it can really restrict the creative process.

Pressure map who does it effect
When bins arent Collected
This a pressure map I showed to the Operations Manger Stephen Green at Newcastle City Council
Doing this pressure map was a great way to understand what happens when there is a problem like this. Stephen was brilliant in explaining which section was correct and what sort of things happen when a complaint is made. From this Stephen put me in touch with Alyson Dyson, who works in the complaints department at the Council.

Interview with Operations Manager
Stephen GreenThis was the first of many conversations with Stephen. In this interview I was able to show the work I had recently done and use it as a talking point.
9/12/2014
When I went for a meeting with Stephen I took my recent work that I presented in my interim, I also added a pressure map which explored the effects on different people when a bin isnt collected. One of the first things I asked was about private companies such as OBriens and what dealings the council have with them. OBriens have a contract to take all the recycling waste that the council collects from the public, and that private companies such as OBriens are in charge of commercial waste. Although the council does take some commercial waste. In the meeting I went in with the assumption that winter was the worst time for collecting rubbish, because of the weather and Christmas waste. Stephen explained that summer time is the worst, this is down to the smell of the waste and the vast amount of garden waste that is created.
One big problem they have is people complaining that there bin hasnt been taken, and at the moment there isnt a way to prove it has. I asked Stephen what hed do if he had a blank check book and was allowed to do anything what would he do. He explained that having a type of bar code system on the bins would be a massive help, as well as a 360 camera on the lorries so they can see whats going on around them. I found out that their lorries are on a 7 year period or until they break then they get replaced, and the rear loaders work of the normal gear box. They have a system in place that when a bin is in the chamber automatic revs are provided to work the rear loader. A majority of their lorries are MAN or DAFF trucks, as the Mercedes and Volvo models are to expensive, even though they are the best money can buy. In the meeting Stephen explained that their refuse lorries work of bio diesel. He also explained that they have problems with motorists going past collection teams at speed, even though all workers are in high vis.

Interview with Corporate complaints worker
Alyson DysonAn interview with Alyson Dyson to talk through the problems they encounter with the public.
17/12/2014
Alyson Dyson deals with the complaints that the council get, this can be anything from no bin collection to members of staff not acting appropriately. I spoke to Alyson to get her view of the waste situation, and I was interested after speaking to Stephen what type of complaints they get to do with waste and refuse lorries. In the interview I found out that the council do an assisted lift system, this is for people who cant take their bin out by them selves. What the bin men do here is take the bin from their property and return it after its been emptied. The workers get a list for who is on one of these schemes. Sometimes they encounters problems such as dogs that wont let workers in to the property . Alyson makes the point that this scheme should be down in a round system, rather than in alphabetical order as its not efficient enough.
Some of the complaints they get to do with the lorries and bins are ones that occur quiet a lot. Alyson explained that you get a lot of residents complaining that the refuse lorry has hit their car, then they try to look for compensation for it. I mentioned about a 360 camera to help solve these types of problems. Alyson mentioned that another occurring complaint is that the bin men havent taken my bin, when in fact a lot of the time the customer hasnt put it out. Also members of the public try to get more household bins, when actually they dont need them. The reason for only having one household bin is to try make people recycle more, and not throw out as much. Other problems are kerb waste especially around the Christmas period, as well as people trying to put waste in the lorry themselves.

Interview with General manager
Ian TurnbullI managed to get visit to OBriens HQ. Ian was really helpful and talked me through their current lorries. I also got the chance to see there recycling system in action.
18/12/2014
I found out that they use Mercedes and Volvo chassis and low entry cabins, then they get delivered to a private company to fit the loaders. The price of these vehicles can be from 150,000, thats without the price of fuel and other factors.
Also each Refuse Lorry is linked up to a system so that office staff can see a live feed of where each lorry is, what speed its doing and where its heading. One major thing I found out in the interview is that each team(Team of two) in a refuse lorry has a PDA. These PDAS have all the details of the bins the works need to collect, from the location to what waste will be in the bin. This allows for quick real time invoicing, but also allows the works to take pictures of any problems or obstacles that prevent them from carrying out their job. Each OBriens bin also has an ID tag in each bin, so they know where it is at all times.
OBriens also have a Refuse lorry for each item of waste, for example they have one just for card and paper then one just for glass. This allows for maxi-mum capacity. As well as the ID tags in the Lorries have weight sensors which measure the weight of each bin. Some of the problems that they encounter are people putting bricks at the bottom of the bins, this is to try fool the work-ers and receive more money.

One single waste system implemented throughout the whole UK. Look at the Germans see what theyre doing how theirs works so well. Think about offering the public something and initiative to recycle and care about the waste their creating.
Possibly running the bin lorries I propose of the waste that is created. Maybe a new type of fuel station at landfills?

This is a quick timeline/flow chart showing my journey to the second section. Ive added some of my ideas at different sections, with my thoughts for and against the idea.
As an incentive to recycle, discounting their council tax as part of recycling could be a possible way to do things.
would this mean less money for oth-er things such as road repairs?.
it would reduce landfills though, and create more jobs in recycling?.
Offering an incentive to recycle could be a really good idea.
Could be incredibly difficult to implement a new waste sys-tem throughout the UK.
A partner advertisement campaign, to make people more aware of the problem, but provide the right information of how and what to recycle.
Though it could be included, differ-ent designs could have an effect?.
Has been done before hasnt really worked?.
