We are thrilled to welcome parents, families and guests to the Kansas State University Orientation!

As a member of the K-State family we invite you to become a member of the K-State Parents & Family Program. This is a completely free resource designed to keep families informed, celebrate student achievements and to help you make family memories at K-State. Our program embraces an extensive definition of family. This may include families of origin and families of choice. If you are a friend, spouse, neighbor, extended family member, guardian, or sibling, we welcome everyone. We seek to create an inclusive environment for all students and their family members.

To become a member, families can sign-up for the Parents & Family Newsletter. In addition to a bi-monthly newsletter, the PFP has a free hotline that parents and families can call with questions. The number is (785) 532-2222 and open for any questions you or your family encounter between now and college graduation!

Mark your calendars! The Parents and Family Program will be hosting an exciting lineup of events throughout the year. Be sure to save the date for the 93nd Annual Family Day celebration held on Saturday, September 18, 2021. We invite families to experience K-State, eat great food, and make memories with your student. Families can hang out at the pre-game Tailgate Party (registration opens late summer) or celebrate your student at the breakfast Pinning Ceremony. This ceremony honors students who are the first in their family to attend K-State and honors students who are following a long family legacy of Wildcats.

Every year our program is looking for leaders to serve on the Parents & Family Advisory Board. This group provides a voice for K-State families for issues pertinent to student life. On-Campus ActivitiesThe Call Hall Dairy Bar is a favorite to all who visit the K-State campus. Located on the northwest corner of Call Hall on North Mid-Campus Drive, the dairy bar offers a delicious variety of over 48 ice cream flavors, 16 of which are offered daily. Also available at the dairy bar is a selection of milk and cheeses, as well as some meat and eggs from the university meat labs and the poultry unit. The Call Hall Dairy Bar also has a second location on the first floor of the student union.C

The Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex is a great place to get involved in exciting fitness classes, intramural sports, or even a self-paced workout. All KSU students receive free admission with their K-State ID. The complex features a variety of spaces, including a multi-activity court (MAC), weight rooms, cardio areas, two indoor tracks, and a rock wall. Also located at the Rec are several courts for racquetball, squash, wallyball, basketball, volleyball, badminton and Pickleball. In addition, the Rec offers a range of fun group fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, and cycling classes.R

The Wabash Cannon Bowl bowling center is located in the basement of the Student

Union. It is a great spot to bowl with friends, have a bowling party, or even join a bowling

league. Also available at Wabash Cannon Bowl are cornhole, pool, and pinball. Food

and drinks are served here as well.

Located on Denison Avenue, the Kansas State University gardens are an educational and fun place to visit on campus. The gardens consist of a variety of plants and flowers which serve as a learning tool for K-State students studying horticulture, as well as a viewing pleasure to all who visit them. These gardens are free of admission and open to the public from March through November.U

The Student Union houses a variety of fun and useful resources. The Union is home to the K-State Campus

Store, which serves as the university bookstore, the Wabash Cannon Bowl bowling center, the copying

and printing center, computer labs, and banking services. Also found here is a variety of places to eat,

including Panda Express and Chick-fil-A.

K-State Traditions

University Fight Song Written in 1927 by Harry E. Erickson, “Wildcat Victory” is the official fight song of Kansas State, a rousing anthem of Wildcat Pride and pure fandom fun. Clap along to the playful melody and don’t forget to pump your fists along to the final line. “Fight, you K-State Wild-cats, For alma mater, fight-fight-fight! Glory in the combat for the purple and the white. Faithful to our colors, We will ever be, Fighting ever fighting for a Wildcat Victory! Go State!“

Royal Purple The university’s color, Royal Purple, was adopt-ed in the fall of 1896. Although K-State’s only official color is royal purple, white has been used as a complementary color for many years. The university’s yearbook is also named after this prominent color, and is the most decorated college yearbook in the nation. At 110 years old the Royal Purple continues to capture the sto-ries of all aspects of the campus and its people.

Open HouseMore than 20,000 visitors show up every April to check out majors and campus life. Experi-ence K-State through performances, eating contests, science experiments and more.

‘Wabash Cannonball’Get on your feet, clap, bend and twist to this rousing anthem. After a fire destroyed the home of the music department in 1968, the band performed the only music that was left: “The Wabash Cannonball.” Now, doing “The Wabash” is a rite of passage for all K-Staters. It was recently named the No. 1 pregame tradition in the Big 12 by ESPN.

K-Staters have created purple-tinted traditions since the university’s founding in 1863.

Willie the Wildcat Our fearless mascot, Willie the Wildcat, does a push up for every point scored at K-State football games and electrifies fans with his famous K-S-U pose. He may not say much, but he sure gets the crowd to make some noise.

KS LettersHigh on a hill overlooking Man-hattan, this de-facto monument is hard to miss. Engineering students plotted the 80-foot-tall “K” in 1921 and later added the “S” on K-Hill. The “U” was never constructed, but students still whitewash the letters every year.

Beach Museum of Art

Enjoy the beauty of art without leaving the K-State campus. The Beach Museum features a variety of collections year round, as well as an always changing set up of exhibitions. Explore works including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and glass. Located at southeast corner of campus.

Ad Astra E. Terra Sculpture

This metal sculpture is located on the northwest side of Seaton Hall and was donated by the Havens Steel Company in 1988 to be used as a teaching tool. It is one of many unique sculptures on campus. Its name means “from the earth to the stars” in Latin.

Manhattan Arts Center

Looking for an art adventure for the whole family? Check out the Manhattan Arts Center located on Poyntz Ave! Here you will find a performance hall, two galleries, an art studio, a set design shop, and much more. Enjoy a range of art classes, live performances, and other fun activities.


RBG Mural

This mural was painted in remembrance of late U.S. Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg. Taylor Carr, a local artist, and Jessica Kerr, the community organization and education chair for Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice (MAPJ), worked together with Incite MHK to make this beautiful tribute possible. You can find this work downtown in the alley off 4th street.

AJ’s Mural

This colorful mural is a must see when visiting Manhattan! You can find this work of art on the porch of AJ’s Pizza, located at 301 Poyntz Ave. This project was sponsored by Incite MHK.

Kitty Castle Mural

Do you love art AND cats? You’re in luck! Stop by and see this vibrant and cute mural of the Kitty Castle by artist Nick "Sick" Fisher, located next to the Ruth Bader Ginsberg mural.

Become one with nature by exploring several nature trails

in the native tallgrass Konza Prairie. A short drive southwest

of Manhattan will take you to miles of grassy plains and hills with open horizons and great

City Park

Right in the heart of Manhattan, City Park has it all. It houses

the public pool, sand volleyball pits, basketball courts, softball

fields, and plenty of open space to hang out, relax and enjoy the

weather. A mile-long concrete path outlines the entirety of the park, perfect for walks and runs

Pillsbury Crossing

Another nature escape outside of city life, Pillsbury Crossing

is a large, flat rock area with overflowing water and miniature

waterfalls. Perfect for picnics and beating that summer heat!

Sunset Zoo

Open year round, the Sunset Zoo has a variety of animals to explore and sightsee. Chimpanzees, flamingos, prairie dogs, and more boast a simple and enjoyable time, and watch out for the peacocks freely roaming the grounds!

Tuttle Creek

Need a stay-cation? Tuttle Creek State Park offers hundreds of acres of land to camp, hike, swim, and explore. Just north of Manhattan, Tuttle Creek is a great place to unwind and get outside!

Holly Delay, Advertising Team, is a senior studying mass communications with a minor in graphic design and is from Morrowville, Kansas. "My favorite K-State memory is having Manhappenin' Magazine work nights with the most amazing team and friends."

Hannah Huyett, Content Creator, is a sophomore studying architectural engineering and is from Kansas City, Kansas.
