In a continuous effort to strengthen Ras Al Khaimah’s (RAK) popularity in European

markets, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) increased its participation in key European travel trade exhibitions in the first month of 2019.

Earlier this month, RAKTDA participated in Fitur, Spain for the very first time, alongside co-exhibitors Rixos, Ritz Carlton, Waldorf Astoria, Department of Museums and Antiquities and Toro Verde UAE, where the team were honoured to showcase Ras Al Khaimah and its key attractions to the King and Queen of Spain, who visited the RAKTDA stand on the opening day.

European visitors are a key focus for Ras Al Khaimah’s tourism promotion strategy in a bid to attract 1.5 million visitors by 2021.

Dubai World Central (DWC) welcomed a total of 900,000 passengers in 2018

(-0.5 per cent) following a surge in customer numbers in Q3 (+26.1 per cent) and moderate growth in Q4 (+three per cent) last year.

The company attributed the growth to the launch of new services from scheduled and charter carriers during the second half of the year. The top regions contributing to growth in traffic at DWC include CIS (408,747 passengers) which grew by 44.4 per cent, Western Europe (196,355 passengers) surging 107.9 per cent and Eastern Europe (186,655 passengers), which grew 3.7 per cent.

Close to 10,000 live events over the course of 173 days, unique gastronomy experiences, interesting shopping options, pavilions of over 190 countries offering immersive, futuristic and interactive content, there’s something for everyone, woven around the sub-themes of opportunity, mobility and sustainability. Sumathi Ramanathan, Director – Destination Marketing, Expo 2020 and Shaun Vorster, Vice President- Business Programming in a tell-all interaction with TSME, unveil the narratives from every corner of the globe at World Expo

Special Feature

By Kritika Dua

Expo 2020 aims to inspire every one of us to make a difference and is, therefore, open for all: families, children, students, group visitors. The displays on site are curated to provoke a reaction so that you will come out with inspiring and enriching experiences and will be able to make small changes in life to make a difference. Sumathi Ramanathan, Director—Destination Marketing, Expo 2020 shares, “Expo 2020 aims at bringing and connecting minds and during the six months of the Expo, the visitors can experience numerous things depending upon their interest. One of the big experiences is people coming to explore what various countries have got to offer. Around 190 countries have confirmed their participation and will be bringing with them the best of their technology, innovation, culture and design. Opportunity, mobility and sustainability will be explored during the Expo 2020, wherein the best scientists, thinkers, architects, entrepreneurs, entertainers, writers and chefs will gather on a platform. Besides the country pavilions, there will be rich content around the themes.” She further informs that there will be a wide range of activities for every interest such as classical concerts, music festivals, dance, yoga, cooking demonstration and more.

The World Expo is one of the world’s oldest and largest international events, taking place every five years and lasting six months and in November 2013 Dubai won the right to host World Expo 2020 bid. With 60 live shows daily and more than

200 F&B outlets and 14 stages in the public realm, there would be something for every taste, age, nationality and culture at Expo 2020, Dubai. Also included, would be fun activities for kids wherein they can look at Virtual Reality and space technology, drive around in interesting cars but at the same time they can also get inspired to become an astronaut or will leave with some other career goal, is something that makes the Expo 2020 distinct.

The UAE pavilion will be one of the biggest pavilions on site as the host nation is designed by Santiago Calatrava and is based on a Falcon, which is the national bird of the UAE, taking flight. In addition to this, Japanese pavilion is a combination of Japanese design and Arabic geometry. Oman pavilion has been designed based on frankincense tree, exploring the theme of mobility and the way frankincense tree in the past has helped people to come together. Located in the Opportunity district, the Ukraine pavilion will

explore the cultural heritage and innovative spirit of Ukraine. It will focus on Smart life, Smart thinking and Smart feeling. India is also participating in the opportunity district. According to Ramanathan, thematic pavilions will be very popular with the visitors and rest depends on their interest.

The experience at the sustainability pavilion is interactive and requires you to engage and choose a path and leave learning about the impact that you have on the world and things that are under your control. The interactivity element is built into it so that

every visitor would somehow have an engaging experience and feel certain emotions. Ramanathan believes that Expo is about bringing and connecting minds. She informs that there will be an array of talks, demonstrations and workshops on VR, Artificial Intelligence as well as thought leadership programmes, whether a business visitor is coming to expand their knowledge in terms of what the future is going to hold or even just a leisure visitor, there’s something for everyone.

It is also being promoted amongst those planning a holiday with family. She confirms, “It’s a fantastic destination for a family as coming to Expo 2020 is a holiday with a purpose owing to the kind of activities and activations that they will witness there. For instance, at the Mobility district, a young boy from India will have a look at how his ancestors used to travel during the old times to today’s travel and when he visits the US pavilion, there’s a Hyperloop (the latest technology in terms of travel) wherein there is an opportunity to see the space mission to Mars. He might be inspired to become an astronaut so you are not only taking him to see the most exciting

robotics and technology but it’s also about inspiring people to think about their future.” Al Wasl Plaza is the tallest projection dome in the world, over 17-storey and has a 360-degree projection with a standing capacity of 15,000 people. It can also be utilised as a venue for a destination wedding, informs Ramanathan.

Elaborating upon the proposition for MICE and the business community, Dr Shaun Vorster, Vice President- Business Programming, Expo 2020 says, “We wanted to create value for the business visitors for which a world-class cutting-edge exhibition and conference centre was made. The

Dubai Exhibition Centre is spread across an area of 45,000 sq. m and will be an ideal space for business-related activities, hosting product launches, trade and investment forums, conferences and summits, accelerated pitches. It can cater to events of all sizes, be it a boardroom meeting of 50 people or a ticketed conference of 20,000 people. There’s a seminar room with a capacity of 200 people for smaller meetings or gatherings. We will be speaking with corporate buyers and association buyers and are finding a lot of enthusiasm from corporates and associations. The platform presents a huge opportunity for the MICE market.”

Besides the Exhibition Centre, there are other spaces such as sustainability pavilion offering intelligent solutions such as harvesting water from the air and new ways to utilise solar energy. Ramanathan adds that Expo 2020

is trying to teach that each one of us has an impact on the world and we can make small changes and the entire experience has been curated to engage people and encourage participation.

The Mobility pavilion deals with the movement of goods, people and ideas as well as explore how people have travelled in the past and how are they going to travel in the future for which the latest technology, know-how and transformation will be on display. She informs that the participants in this section such as US, Poland, Oman and more are focused towards exploring where is the future of the logistics going to be how are we going to travel in the

future and space tourism. When asked about how Expo

2020 will help unlock the potential for individuals and communities to shape the future, Ramanathan replies, “Every experience that happens on the Expo 2020 site is curated around these major symbols. Case in point, some of the food that we will have on site will be made by the women community or bringing in food from areas where the prime ingredients are locally sourced. We are looking into ways to empower budding entrepreneurs, small businesses, artisans and more. This Expo is accessible and open for big, medium and small businesses. The EXPO Live’s flagship Innovation Impact Grant Programme, funded by the UAE government, provides a grant to upcoming innovators across the international market is already under progress and 70 grantees from 42 countries have

secured funding, guidance and exposure yet. These innovations will get a space to display at the Expo 2020 and will be able to showcase their products to the participating countries and 25 million visitors.”

Throwing light on the sustainability initiatives, Vorster informs, “We are implementing some of the smartest solutions around sustainability and environment considerations. With partners such as Siemens on board who make sure that we have a smart city that is also smart in the way we deal with the resources in the environment. Sustainability is embedded in what we have built

and the way we operate it. 85 per cent of our waste will be segregated and diverted from landfill for which we have partnered with Dulsco. The four R’s are very much part of our waste management strategy. 900,000 mobile phones can be charged from the power generated by our sustainability pavilion. This pavilion can also inspire young people to go and study and be more committed towards sustainability.” He further adds that the transport solution will be focused on seamless visitor experiences and multi-modal transportation system.

Talking about the numerous hotels available to cater to the visitors, she reveals, “Emaar Hospitality Group is the official hotel partner of Expo 2020 and we will be working closely with them in terms of accommodation. Dubai is well-equipped to cater to the visitation and a wide range of hotels are available from five to four stars,

service apartments, rental units and more. We are expanding the range of apartments that are available within Dubai.” “By next year, we will have 132,000 hotel rooms in Dubai. Besides metro, there will be Expo rides and buses connecting major hotels attractions, cruise terminals, airports to the Expo site,” adds Vorster. Expo 2020, Dubai is committed to building a long-lasting and sustainable legacy in many industries and areas. 80 per cent of Expo 2020’s infrastructure will remain in legacy and will have practical value long into the future. Dubai Exhibition Centre is a key part of the legacy.

Ramanathan divulges details

about the Expo 2020’s outreach and engagement, “In terms of marketing, we are going all out to our key markets and engaging with key trade shows and exhibitions, travel intermediaries that are crucial to bring the visitation over. Our engagement programme includes working across sectors such as tourist companies, transport providers, airlines, travel trade, tour operators, DMCs and OTAs. Doing roadshows collaboratively with our partners will also be a part of the outreach plans. We will align our work with Dubai Tourism in terms of our outreach.” She adds that their top visitation markets are closely aligned with Dubai Tourism visitor source markets and India is a priority market for them across the board besides the GCC region, UK, Germany, France, China, Russia and CIS countries. Expo 2020 is also reaching out to affinity markets such as Italy, Japan and Korea.

located in Media City, Dubai, recently completed an extensive refurbishment project unveiling a complete modern new outlook with contemporary lounge and lobby area, sophisticated rooms, banquet halls, latest amenities and revamped food and beverage outlets.

The property also announced that it has been accredited to operate dual activities, offering four-star hotel services besides the deluxe hotel apartment. In addition to the spacious one, two- and three-bedroom apartments that overlook the scenic Palm Jumeirah, the property underwent an expansion through 2017 and 2018, adding multi-bedroom units and common spaces, increasing its lodging capacity

from 167 to 242 rooms (45 per cent increase in inventory). The rooms are tastefully designed specifically to suit the different needs of every visitor.

Ayman Ashor, General Manager at Arjaan by Rotana commented, “We are delighted to welcome partners, corporate travellers and leisure guests to Arjaan by Rotana to experience the new level of sophistication the hotel has to offer. The

W Hotels, part of Marriott International, has announced the

opening of W Dubai – The Palm, located on the Palm Jumeirah, the largest man-made island in the world and one of Dubai’s most iconic attractions.

W Dubai – The Palm is the newest W Escape resort, the brand’s playful spin on the traditional resort experience and is set to add a new beat to the already dynamic and pulsating city. With its electrifying style, evocative design and eclectic destination restaurants led by world-class chefs including Massimo Bottura and Akira Back, W Dubai – The Palm will shine bright in the famed City of Gold.

Hilton Hotels & Resorts has revealed that its largest development pipeline in the

Middle East is in Saudi Arabia with 35 new hotels planned in the kingdom.

The hotel chain is expanding its footprint throughout the region with the kingdom having the largest number of Hilton hotels in development, it was announced at the recent the Saudi Hotel Investment Conference.

Carlos Khneisser, Vice President of development, Mena said, “We’ve been operating in the kingdom since 1992 and have grown very strong relationships with owners over that time. This has allowed us to grow to 11 hotels and notably to build a pipeline of 35 new hotels under development, which will add over 10,000 new rooms in the coming three to five years. This represents our largest pipeline in the Middle East and the confidence we have in

the strength of the market with increasing demand for business, leisure and religious tourism.”

Religious tourism makes up the bulk of Saudi Arabia's tourism with over two million visitors annually. Over the past three years, business tourism is growing at an increasing rate. The tourism sector in Saudi Arabia has grown at a much faster rate than the wider economy, according to reports by the Saudi Tourism Information and Research Center (MAS). Tourism revenues rose from SR57.3 billion (USD 15.2 billion) in 2004 to an estimated SR211 billion in 2018.

This upward trend is expected to continue for both the hospitality and tourism industries. The government’s diversification mandate is clear - Tourism is set on a trajectory to make the highest contributions to GDP from the non-oil sectors.

Dubai's Gloria Hotel & Apartments, the hospitality product of Al Ghaith

Two Seasons Management Company is also planning to launch new hotels in Dubai and Morocco.

MIDDLE EAST CARRIERS WITNESS AIR TRAVEL DEMAND SLOWDOWN IN 2018

Middle East carriers registered the slowest year-over-year (y-o-y) international air traffic growth in 2018, recording a 4.2 per cent increase in demand compared to 2018, during which a growth of 6.9 per cent was reported. According to the figures released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), it was the second year in a row of moderating demand growth. Capacity climbed 5.2 per cent and load factor slipped 0.7 percentage point to 74.7 per cent. The deceleration in growth reflects the impact of policy measures and geopolitical tensions, including travel restrictions and the temporary ban on large portable electronic devices. Traffic actually declined 0.1 per cent y-o-y in December but this may reflect volatility in data.

Asia-Pacific airlines led the international air traffic growth across all regions in 2018, with a 7.3 per cent y-o-y increase, followed by Latin American airlines (up 6.9 per cent), European carriers (up 6.6 per cent), African airlines (up 6.5 per cent), North American airlines (up 5.0 per cent) and Middle East carriers (up 4.2 per cent). International passenger traffic in 2018 climbed 6.3 per cent compared to 2017,

down from 8.6 per cent annual growth the year before. Capacity rose 5.7 per cent and load factor climbed by 0.4 percentage point to 81.2 per cent.

Furthermore, domestic air travel climbed 7.0 per cent in 2018, which was unchanged from the rate in 2017. All markets showed annual growth, led by India and China, which both posted double-digit annual increases. Capacity rose 6.8 per cent and load factor was 83.0 per cent, up 0.2 percentage points compared to 2017. The global passenger traffic results for 2018 showed that demand (revenue passenger kilometres or RPKs) rose by a healthy 6.5 per cent compared to full-year 2017. Although this represented a slowdown compared to the 2017 annual growth of 8.0 per cent, it was another year of above-trend growth. Full-year 2018 capacity climbed 6.1 per cent and load factor edged up 0.3 percentage point to a record 81.9 per cent, exceeding the previous high set in 2017.

December RPKs rose 5.3 per cent against the same month in 2017, the slowest y-o-y pace since January 2018 and a continuation of the trend that saw demand growth decelerate to an annualised rate of five per cent over the course

of the 2018 second half compared to a nine per cent pace in the first half. “2018 was another year of strong passenger demand, as aviation continued to support the global economy. We expect similar, if somewhat moderating performance in 2019. Nevertheless, slowing growth in the second half of 2018, coupled with concerns over issues including Brexit and US-China trade tensions, are creating some uncertainty to this positive outlook,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

“Aviation continued to demonstrate why it is the `Business of Freedom', in 2018. We safely transported more than 4.3 billion passengers. These people used air connectivity to conduct trade and business, reunite with friends and loved ones, explore the world and in some cases, even to begin new lives. Aviation makes the modern world possible but we depend on borders that are open to people and trade to be effective. In 2019, we will be strong advocates against a rising tide of protectionism and trade conflict, so that the Business of Freedom can continue to do its part to make the world a more prosperous and happier place,” said de Juniac.

CAPACITY CLIMBED 5.2 PER CENT AND LOAD FACTOR SLIPPED 0.7 PERCENTAGE POINT TO 74.7 PER CENT

UPDATE

Passenger traffic across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East climbed up in November 2018, rising 3.8 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively, new

data showed.According to data from Airports Council International Asia-Pacific, the

Middle East recorded mixed results. Bahrain (BAH) reported the highest growth in the region with a 15.3 per cent increase in total passenger traffic, followed by Amman (up 11.5 per cent) and Muscat (up 11.3 per cent). Dubai (DXB), the largest hub in the Middle East, posted a negative growth rate of -0.8 per cent.

Despite a slowdown in the overall pace of growth in Asia-Pacific, India continued to lead with approximately 8.0 per cent growth in total passenger traffic compared with last year, while also demonstrating signs of moderation in both the international and domestic sectors. Delhi (DEL), the largest airport in the nation, reported only marginal growth of one per cent during the month, likely impacted by a temporary runway maintenance closure that reduced operations. The three airports with the most total passenger volume increase were: Bangalore (up 23.8 per cent), Ahmedabad (up 21.8 per cent) and Hyderabad (up 11.1 per cent).

In terms of air freight, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East experienced a decline of 2.1 per cent and 0.7 per cent, respectively, amid a weakened global economy and reduction in manufacturing activities.

Sharm el-Sheikh is an exclusive resort town between the desert of the Sinai Peninsula and the Red Sea. Less than half a century ago, it was a small Bedouin village and today, known for its sheltered sandy beaches, clear waters and coral reefs, it is Sinai Peninsula's major tourism centre and one of the world's top diving destinations. After a busy day of touring, one may visit the Naama Bay, which is home to many of Sharm’s high-end hotels. It is also a vital site for scuba and snorkelling in the Straits of Tiran including Gordon, Thomas and Jackson reefs. Ras Muhammad National Park is a major diving destination with marine life around the Yolanda reefs and the Thistlegorm wreck. Sharm el-Maya, another beach spot in the area, offers Bedouin goods in its old market. Farther north, Nabq Protected Area is a reserve for water birds and marine animals. With excellent beaches, beautiful coral reefs and some of the best diving spots in the world, Sharm el-Sheikh can be the perfect destination to unwind the mind.

Cairo is chaos at its most magnificent, breathtaking and striking manner. From above, the indistinct roar of the muezzins' call to prayer echoes out from duelling minarets. Below, car horns bellow tuneless symphonies amid avenues of faded 19th-century grandeur lined with colossal Fatimid and Mamluk monuments. To unwind from one’s busy schedule, travellers may choose to visit the Cairo Festival City, City Stars, Golf City Mall El Obour or Manial Palace. Furthermore, with a Light & Sound show by the Giza pyramids, a ballet-show or a concert at the opera house, a visit to the National Circus and Cairo Tower, shopping at Khan El Khalili bazaar and dining at a floating restaurant or Al Azhar Park, this city is where you really get a feel of the Egyptian street life. One may also consider visiting the Old Cairo for its religious complexes, Al Azhar mosque, the Citadel or a folklore night at one of its cultural centres such as the Mahka Al-Qalaa and the Wekalet Bazaraa.

Regarded as the ‘Jewel of the Nile’, Aswan is an ideal spot for shopping in the old bazaars and soaking the colourful Nubian villages. Speaking for itself, more as a destination for the one-day trips, the Aswan and Luxor boast the other side of the blue-collar culture, aptly suited for a relaxing outing. Luxor has often been called the world's greatest open-air museum, as the number and preservation of the monuments in the Luxor area are unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Likewise, Aswan, Egypt's sunniest southern city, shares the ancient frontier with southern Africa and has a distinct African atmosphere while the Nile is at its most beautiful, flowing through amber desert, granite rocks and tropical plants. The Aswan Botanical Garden, Philae Temple and the famous High Dam of Egypt, which is considered to be an engineering miracle are some of the ‘must-visit’ places in Aswan. Scattered across the landscape are the riches from the temples of Karnak and Luxor in the east to the Valley of Kings, Valley of Queens and many more on the west bank. Travellers can try a ride on a hot-air balloon or a horse carriage by the River Nile.

finance facility is no longer available, a report said.

The Six Flags theme park project has been put on hold following a strategic review of its future development plans and capital deployment said a report.

“As a result, the syndicated finance facility intended for utilisation as part of the development of the Six Flags branded theme park is no longer available, and the Six Flags Dubai project cannot proceed at this time," it said.

DXB Entertainments said the scope of its strategic review will be adjusted and an update will be provided in due course.
