Yogeshwar Nagar is
situated in the
south of Ahmeda-
bad,Gujarat, India.
The landownership
of this land is not
particularly cle-
ar, but the land
certainly does not
belong to the inhab-
itants of the site.

The people make in-
tensive use of their
streets. This mayleads to overcrowded
streets. Therefore
the implementation
of roofterraces can
be seen as an oppor-
tunity. By turning
the roof terrace
into a public spa-
ce, the intensity ofthe streets could be
lowered, and the use
of space could be-
come more balanced.
Additionally tur-
ning roof terraces
into public spaces
seems to be a way of
creating more spa-ce without sealing
further ground.

ce on the ground,

Details/System
The watersystem that
is being implemented
works as follows:
rainwater is collec-
ted in wells. These
are connected th-
rough an underground
drainage system. and
transport the waterto the agricultural
land. There it will
be used to irrigate
bamboo and poplars.
Finally the waste-
water of the urban
site will be used as
well resulting in a
closed watersystem
that provides clean
and usable water for
the neighbourhood.

In order to gain as
much open space as
possible, we plan to
use a novel appro-
ach including bamboo
structure and push
the houses together
back to back. Some
streets will disap-
pear and the others
can be widened.
Creating unique
sites the streets
could be characte-
rised by giving them
diverse topics.

Role of women
Women play an im-
portant role in
society and the
development of new
quarters. They stay
in the settlement
and take care of the
children and the
house.
Since we are going
to improve their
skills with a work-
shopsystem they can
be selfsucient and
sustainable.
They can provide
their products by
themselves.
A good connection to
the city supports
this system.

Financial aspects
Micronance Creditworthiness
The nancial system is
based upon the theo-
ry of Muhammad Yun-
us. In his ideas, he
proposes the use of
microcredits. He pro-vides credit to peop-
le who are collabora-
ting in a small group
of about ve persons.
Each person still has
a personal responsi-
bility, but at the
same time, each person
has to make sure thatthe others are taking
their responsibili-
ty. This type of so-
cial control results
in a very eicient and
trustworthy system.
Sometimes, a one oor
high space is leftopen within the struc-
ture for the existing
house to grow. Above
this space, an ameni-
ty could be built. It
would be part of the
new public space that
is being proposed for
the neighbourhood.

Our variation on this
theory is to dividethe site into certain
larger groups, accor-
ding to the number
of streets. Within
the streets, house-
holds are also being
clustered. First one
ve-house-cluster will
be formed. Then thesecond one and so on.
These smaller groups
have to make sure that
each household takes
their responsibility.
On a larger scale all
the these clusters in
one street have a res-
ponsibility accordingto each other. This
results in a pyramid
like shape of respon-
sibility.
