"What I disagree with is the ideological commitment to absolute minimum sentences in all circumstances, where the government takes away the discretion of a judge, a lawyer, a crown attorney, a probation officer who has prepared a pre-sentence report and they say, perhaps, that in a minor incident of possession of marijuana plants there is a better solution than to throw the fellow in jail.”
Official Party stance: Marijuana should be legalized and regulated

Van Kesteren said he also supports measures to ban house arrest for serious drug crimes, increase fines for drug dealers, and favours halting proceedings to decriminalize marijuana. ..”

“We agree with stiffer fines and jail terms for marijuana grow-ops, but the penalties are still at the discretion of judges. "In my riding, I have seen huge numbers of marijuana grow operations taken down by RCMP officers, who are overwhelmed with the number of grow ops reported. "Mr. Speaker, with 25,000 Ontario grow houses currently flooding the U.S. with marijuana, the U.S. ambassador has expressed that the Liberal government's relaxing of drug laws could make Canada-U.S. border problems even worse. While Liberals play to marijuana growers, $1 million per minute of cross-border trade is at stake. Why is the government jeopardizing Canadian exports to the U.S. and Canadian jobs with its reckless drug policy?"

"Each one of you here today has used the words “awareness”, “best practices”, “data collection”, “science”, and “reasoning”. I will bring up a term that is widely used: “medical marijuana”. I don't believe there is any awareness of it. I don't believe there are any best practices for it. I don't believe there's been any data collection whatsoever. There's been very little science done on it. There's very little reasoning as to why we're doing it, especially when we have synthetic models of Marinol, nabiximol, and dronabinol, which provide opportunities for those who are affected by some significant diseases and can aid them."

"In a mailer sent out to his New Brunswick Southwest riding, Williamson asks voters to consider the Liberals’ newfound push for legalization of marijuana, which he manages to boil down to “Trudeau wants to get your kid hooked on the devil weed!” The flyer reminds voters that Trudeau has “smoked weed” and has “visited schools to tell kids that marijuana should be legal.” Next he wants to legalize marijuana and “display & sell it in stores.”

"Mr. Speaker, I listened to the member and he thinks that marijuana is not a drug that should be criminalized, that it should be decriminalized. I wonder what he thinks of the RCMP operational intelligence, in that the superintendent from the Surrey detachment said, “What can't be debated is that cannabis is a currency for organized crime”. When I did a tour of my riding when we were talking about the dangers of marijuana, there was a concern in the school districts that the drug dealers would definitely lace marijuana with drugs that would be dangerous to young people."

"You heard Mrs. DeGroote say that Halton has some of the worst problems in this respect. Marijuana is the drug of choice for young people. In grades 7 to 12, 34% use marijuana. And it causes depression, it's linked with many cancers including brain cancer, it can cause psychosis, and it leads to diabetes. It's also linked to automobile accidents and industrial accidents, including death. So we're the party who wants to keep marijuana illegal for all of those reasons."

“Mr. Speaker, yesterday the Liberal member for Malpeque and the NDP member for Vancouver East met to support convicted drug dealer Marc Emery. Chrtien has always said he's never smoked pot, but on Friday he said he might consider it. "I never tried it. I said I might be able someday to do it," he said.Chrtien was more specific in an interview with a Winnipeg newspaper. "Perhaps I will try it when it will no longer be criminal," he said. "I will have my money for my fine and a joint in the other hand."Chrtien was referring to proposed legislation that would decriminalize marijuana. People caught with 30 grams or less would be subject to a fine, not a court appearance or a criminal record.
