“An Overture to Underwriting” In about 45 days you will have an opportunity to be a part of Boone County’s continuous improvement process. Changing the economic dynamic for our area (and your business) involves your action and participation. But don’t worry. We’ve got the initi-ative, ideas, and underwriting opportunities all lined up for you! Underwriting? [Is the Chamber selling insurance?] Not quite but your financial support of the products, programs and activities of the chamber essentially ensure our ability to fulfill our mission “to enhance the economic vitality and quality of life” for our area. Let’s be honest, your sponsor dollars not only fund important programs like High School Tours, FFA and 4H scholarships, professional development seminars, legislative programs, networking events and more, these dollars also make up the marginal difference between membership dues and the cost of operating a local chamber of commerce. Circa 1970: Membership dues covered about 70% to 80% of a chamber’s operational expenses. Today, that number hovers around 30%. For the Boone County Chamber that number is 23%. That means that 77% of the revenue we generate (that pays for staff, lights, heat, computers, etc.) comes from special programming and managing other business units outside of the Chamber. The good news is we have adapted well to increase the number of tangible benefits and impactful events and activities. At the same time, there is great opportunity for you as a member of the Chamber to support our initiatives knowing that your dollars help the community, help the chamber, and help you market and promote your business. Our 2019 MEMBER GUIDE will be coming to you soon, laying out some attractive “packages” for you to consider – a whole lotta bang for the buck! Give some thought to underwriting our programs, and take an active role in the continuous improvement of Boone County.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
Chamber express · November 2018 8
The Holiday season has officially begun! November is a month that reminds us to be grateful and thankful for the abundance in our lives. What we turn our focus and attention to grows. This month take time to honor the wonderful things in your life that make you feel whole and well. Watch how that spills over into other aspects of your life and the people around you. Take time to give to that foundation or charity or donate some of your time to an organization that needs the help. We could all use a little more appreciation, love and gratitude. If everyone did something like this at least once a day our community grows because, what gets appreciated gets repeated.

The Madrid Christmas Extravaganza has been moved from the first Monday night of December to the first Saturday in December (December 1). People interested in participating as crafters/vendors should contact [email protected]. Many businesses are planning open houses and there will be a variety of Christmas-related events. MAC is in the process of selecting a new individual to help promote the community and the Chamber. Look for an announcement soon! After a soggy, rainy Labor Day that caused the annual parade to be rained out, a make-up parade was held on October 20. Parade marshal was Floyd "Pinkie" Gibbons, long-time community volunteer. This coincided with the first Madrid Fall Fest at Edgewood Park.

In 2004, Child Care Junction was founded through Boone County Empowerment to address a key community need – quality child care. With extensive community support, the Goldthwaite Garvey Family Resource Center was built, housing Child Care Junction. In July 2007, Child Care Junction became an independent 501c3 non-profit organization. Attesting to Child Care Junction's history of community partnership, the Family Resource Center is also home to two other partnering organizations - Drake Head Start and Beckwith Adult Day Services. Child Care Junction is licensed to serve 126 children. They are committed to serving all families seeking quality care and education in their infant, toddler, preschool, and school age classrooms. At Child Care Junction, they believe:
• Children are unique and special in their own way.
• Children develop and mature at individualized rates.
• Children should be allowed to express themselves and recognize their individual differences.
Children learn best through active exploration and interaction with peers, adults, and environments. Child Care Junction builds on its history of community collaboration to promote a community culture dedicated to early learning and quality care. With broad community support, Child Care Junction achieves the highest standards in accessible and affordable education and quality care for children and families.
County Assets
I have been spending more time in Omaha since my daughter moved there in August. I am thoroughly impressed with the way Omaha promotes all of their attractions. They have realized the importance of knowing their community assets and promoting all of them to their citizens and others. They have been successful because everyone buys into the idea that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” People visit Omaha because they have a “full” menu of things to do and experience. They understand that everyone wins when there is a strong connection between businesses and attractions. As I travel around the area I am amazed by all the positive things going on in Boone County. I see citizens, business owners and leaders focused on growing their business districts and improv-ing the quality of life in their communities. It is important for all of us to know “our menu” and to share it with citizens and visitors to our county. I would encourage everyone to visit our local attractions and learn more about them and the experiences they offer. Promot-ing our county assets will benefit the “whole”! Tourist attractions: Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad and James H. Andrew Railroad Museum, Seven Oaks Recreation, High Trestle Trail, Iowa Arboretum, Ledges State Park, Boone History Center, Boone Speedway, Cole and Hickory Grove Schoolhouses, Madrid Historical Museum. Parks: Don Williams Park, Swede Point Park, Grant’s Woods Park, McHose Park, Herman Park, Memorial Park, Dalander Park, Og-den City Park. Winery: Snus Hill Winery Brewery: Boone Valley Brewing Golf Courses: Honey Creek Golf Course and Cedar Point Golf Course Lodging & Campgrounds : American Inn, Baymont Inn & Suites, Super 8, Boulder Inn & Suites, YMCA Camp, Sunstream Retreat, Swede Point Park, Don Williams Recreation, Boone County Fairgrounds
Education: Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC)
