Tomlinson’s team will have to replace all of the starters from last season, but that is just fine for the first year coach. He prefers to start with a clean slate and give his young group of kids every opportunity to earn a starting position. This seems to be the year for first-year coaches. Dyer County has given the head coaching job to Obion Central alum Barry Kendall. He was former head coach Adam Renshaw’s defensive coordinator for five years before Renshaw took the offensive coordinator job at Cleveland High School. Kendall will have to replace starting QB Dylan Dye and RB Thaddeaus Medford and will make some changes in the run- ning game this season. Juniors Brandon Cruse and Brad Starkes will be shar- ing the load at RB. ——— DYER COUNTY Choctaws Head Coach: Barry Kendall (First year). 2011 Record: 9-3 (Advanced to Round 2 of 5A playoffs) Key players: WR/LB Ky Wil- son (Sr., 5-9, 165); QB Tucker Cozort (Jr., 5-10, 170); RB/LB Brad Starks (Jr., 5-9, 225); RB/DB Brandon Cruse (Jr., 5- 8, 170); OL/DL Caleb Reader (Sr., 6-2, 280); WR Adam Rich- ardson (Sr., 5-10, 160); OLB Ron Fryerson (Sr., 6-1, 180); WR Austin Richardson (Sr., 5- 10, 160). Outlook: Cozort had a great offseason and has developed his passing skills and is expect- ed to take on a leadership role this season. He will hand off to Starks and Cruse. Kendall says he will use these two quite often as he plans to get the ball down field more using the running game and introduce a wrinkle or two that will make it hard for defenses to defend. Wilson will be a key factor in the passing game. If he can keep up his stellar performances from last year, it will force opposing de- fenses to use double coverage on him and that will help out the running game by taking a possible defender out of the running lanes. Kendall believes the scheme he has in place will give them an edge that the Choctaws have not had in re- cent years. ——— FULTON CITY Bulldogs Head Coach: Brad Rozzell (1-20 in 2 seasons) 2011 Record: 1-10 (First round of KY 1A playoffs) Key players: QB Artemius Joy (Soph., 5-8, 155); RB Dev- on Jackson (Sr., 5-5, 150); RB Darian Fountain (Fr. 5-8, 160); OL/DL Kahalil Frame (Sr., 6-4, 295). Outlook: With very little depth, many of the Bulldogs will be playing double duty this season. Rozzell said this is one of the smallest teams FC has ever had when it comes to the number of players. He expects there to be 22 kids on the team due to a very low number of boys in the school. Last season, Rozzell relied heavily on Jac- quise Lockett on both sides of the ball. Now that he is playing at Kent State, Rozzell will have to rely on Frame to provide the leadership for the team. Rozzell believes Frame could be one of the top five players in Kentucky this season. Memphis, Louis- ville, Murray State and West- ern Kentucky are some of the schools taking a close look at Frame. Rozzell says there are not that many kids with Frame’s size who can move as fast as he does. Jackson, who gained 600 yards on the ground last season, will be the primary ball- carrier for the Bulldogs. Joy will have to gain experience at QB quickly as this will be his first full season at the position. He replaces junior Mason Garland at QB, who gave up football after suffering his second con- cussion last season. It will be tough enough for the Bulldogs to compete with teams like Mayfield and Russellville. They can expect a much-improved Fulton County. ——— FULTON COUNTY Pilots Head Coach: Deatrik Kenny (3-18 in 2 seasons) 2011 Record: 2-9 (First round of KY 1A playoffs) Key players: RB Demontrial Pierce (Sr. 5-7, 150); DE Jami- al Crumble (Sr., 6-1, 265); OL Ricky Baglbey (Sr., 6-0, 185); QB Damian Roach (Sr., 5-10, 165). Outlook: It all revolves around Pierce. As a RB last season, he rushed for over 1,000 yards. But it is his abil- ity to return kickoffs and punts where he is most dangerous. Pierce returned nine kickoffs for touchdowns in 2011, and in 2010 he returned eight for scores. Kenny thinks this may be his most talented team since he has been at FC. He says it has been a complete turn- around and expects his team to be very competitive this season with an improved offense. With seven seniors and nine starters on the team, the Pilots will have some experience. Crumble will be called upon to anchor the defensive line. He averaged seven tackles per game last season with many counting for a loss of yards. Kenny has a strong group of freshmen who he expects will get good as they get more playing time dur- ing the season. ——— MONTGOMERY CENT. Indians Head Coach: Jeff Tomlinson (First season) 2011 Record: 3-7 (Missed 4A playoffs) Key players: QB Derrick Posey (Sr., 6-1, 185); RB/DB Tevin Howell (Sr., 5-7, 140); K Cole Mensing (Sr., 6-1, 180); WR/DB Zach Imia (Sr. 5-10, 165); WR/DB Zach Hawk (Sr., 5-10, 170); OL/DL Austin Downey (Jr., 6-1, 260). Outlook: Tomlinson wants to establish a mindset and tradi- tion of, it matters what the team does. He wants to build a new tradition at MC and get the first playoff win in the school’s his- tory and put more emphasis on football fundamentals. The In- dians will be run-first team and establish the passing game later in each contest to take ad- vantage of opposing defenses. Seniors Posey and Howell will be the cogs in the gears for the Indians. Tomlinson will be relying on the speedy Howell to keep the running game go- ing and on Posey to get the ball out to a variety of receivers. If the Indians have problems get- ting the ball across the goal line once they get into the red zone, then Tomlinson will have to count on Mensing. WAYNE COUNTY Wildcats Head Coach: Ricky Rice (144-97 in 22 season. 2011 Record: 14-0 (Won Class 1A state championship) Key players: WR/DB Bran- don Lowe (Jr., 6-1, 190); FB/ MLB Karson Kelly (Sr., 5-9, 180); OL/DL Dylon Jackson (Sr., 5-11, 205); RB/DB Jacob Bevis (Jr,. 5-8, 140); OL/DL Payton Hatcher (Jr., 6-3, 345); DB/WR Tony Van Etten (Jr., 5- 8, 150). Outlook: The defending Class 1A champs will have their work cut out for them this season if they want to return to the BlueCross Bowl. With all 22 starters gone from last year’s team, Rice will have to rely on his younger players to step up in starting roles. Lowe will no doubt be the key for the Wild- cats. If Kelly and/or Turnbow can get the ball to Lowe in the open field, then the Wildcats will be able to move the ball. The running game and second- ary will be the strengths of the team. The Wildcats can expect a strong challenge for the dis- trict from Mount Pleasant and Loretto this season. Continued from Page 22 ‘OTHERS
