El Gordo DrawingEl Gordo, the world’s oldest weekly lottery, will be drawn Saturday in Spain. This year, $3.3 billion is expected to be distributed, making it the biggest jackpot prize in world history.
Democratic lawmakers and indepen-
dent Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday
that military-style assault weapons
should be banned and that a national
commission should be established to
examine mass shootings in the U.S.
The proposals were among the first
to come from Congress in the wake of
Friday’s school shooting in Newtown,
Conn. The time for “saying that we
can’t talk about the policy implica-
tions of tragedies like this is over,”
said Rep. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.,
who won a Senate seat in the Novem-
ber elections.
President Barack Obama and Sen-
ate Democrats haven’t pushed for new
gun controls since rising to power in
the 2008 national elections. Outspo-
ken advocates for stricter laws, includ-
ing Sen. Dianne Feinstein, say that’s
because of the powerful sway of the
National Rifle Association.
But advocates also say the latest
shooting is a tipping point that could
change the dynamic of the debate
dramatically. Feinstein, D-Calif., said
she will propose legislation next year
that would ban big clips, drums and
strips of more than 10 bullets. “It can
be done,” she said Sunday of reviving

Pentagon Front-Runner Has Obama Ties
Former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel
is a contrarian Republican moderate
and decorated Vietnam combat vet-
eran who has suggested he is likely
to support a more rapid withdraw-
al of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
As President Barack Obama’s
could come this week — and con-
firmed, he would succeed Defense
Secretary Leon Panetta. Although
Panetta said he intends to leave early
next year, he has not said when.
To insiders, Obama’s preference
for Hagel makes sense.
“A Hagel nomination signals an
interest in, and a commitment to,
continuing a bipartisan approach
to national security,” said David
Berteau, senior vice president at
the Center for Strategic and Inter-
national Studies. LOLITA C. BALDOR (AP)
top candidate for defense secre-
tary, Hagel has another creden-
tial important to the president: a
personal relationship with Obama,
forged when they were in the Sen-
ate and strengthened during over-
seas trips they took together.
Hagel, 66, emerged last week
as the front-runner for the Penta-
gon’s top job, four years after leaving
behind a Senate career in which he
carved out a reputation as an inde-
pendent thinker and blunt speaker.

reluctant to make their case against
tougher gun laws. “Meet the Press”

All eight Republicans on the Senate
Judiciary Committee were unavailable

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, was
the sole representative of gun rights’

of other women blocked the street
and chanted against the judge in
an upper-class district of Alexan-
dria, Egypt’s second-largest city.
“The line was not moving since
8 a.m. I protest. It is now 7 p.m.,”
Mustafa said at the time. “He wants
us to get bored and leave.” New
offi cials were brought in to speed
up the process.
The scene was a refl ection of
the deep distrust of Egypt’s ruling
Islamists and their management of
a referendum on a draft constitu-
tion that they largely wrote.
Questions raised Sunday over
the referendum’s legitimacy sug-
gest the confrontation between
Islamists and their secular, liberal
and Christian opponents will not be
resolved by the long-awaited vote.
As Islamist President Moham-
med Morsi rushed the referendum
despite opposition, the dispute over
the charter has turned into a fi ght
over the Islamists’ hold on power,
and the ballot has become a yes or
no vote on the president himself.
Activists and opponents of the
constitution said Sunday that the
fi rst round of voting a day earlier
was marred by violations. A coali-
tion of rights groups said the fi rst
round should be held over again.
That appeared highly unlike-
ly. The Muslim Brotherhood said
the draft was on route to approval.
But the margin from the fi rst
round of voting, which took place
in 10 of Egypt’s 27 provinces, was
narrow — and only a 32 percent
turnout.
Preliminary results showed
55.8 percent backed the draft,
according to the Brotherhood.
The head of the referendum
commission said the offi cial results
will be announced after the second
round this Saturday. SARAH EL DEEB (AP)
Syrian VP: Civil War Cannot Be Solved Militarily
Syria’s longtime vice president said
Sunday that his regime and the reb-
els are both going down a losing
path after 21 months of civil war,
a rare admission by a top govern-

Assad’s victory is unlikely.
Farouk al-Sharaa told the Leba-
nese newspaper Al-Akhbar that nei-
ther the rebels nor the Assad regime
Beirutcan “decide the battle militarily.”
His comments came as an
Islamist faction of Syrian rebels
captured an infantry base in Alep-
po, and Syrian warplanes blast-
ed a Palestinian refugee camp in
Damascus, killing eight people and
wounding dozens, activists said.
A statement Sunday by the al-
Tawheed Brigade said the rebels
“fully liberated” the Aleppo facil-
ity Saturday. (AP)

Votes Test Chavez’s InfluenceCaracas, Venezuela
Venezuelans were choosing gover-
nors and state lawmakers on Sun-
day in elections seen as a key test of
whether President Hugo Chavez’s
movement can endure if the social-
ist leader leaves the political stage.
The vote was the fi rst time in
Chavez’s nearly 14-year-old presi-
dency that he has been unable to
actively campaign. He hasn’t spo-
ken publicly since undergoing can-
cer surgery Tuesday in Cuba.
Governorships in the country’s
23 states were being decided in
the elections. Chavez’s party now
controls all but eight of the states.
Vice President Nicolas Mad-
uro urged supporters Sunday to
vote for Chavez’s allies, imploring
voters at a news conference: “Let’s
not fail Chavez.”
Opponents called his remarks a
blatant violation of electoral law. (AP)

The killer then went to the
school with guns he took from his

Gov. Dannel Malloy said the

Malloy offered no possible

How It BeganThe ShooterAdam Lanza was a skinny, withdrawn, socially awkward 20-year-old who excelled in
academics. Investigators said he attended Sandy Hook Elementary School years ago but couldn’t explain why he went there Friday and gunned down 26 people. Authorities said Lanza had no criminal history, but he had been diagnosed with Asperger’s, a mild form of autism.
His FamilyLanza’s mother, Nancy Lanza, was the first victim of the Friday killings and the last
discovered. She collected guns, though how many she had is not clear. Authorities say several were registered to her, including the ones used in the massacre. She was divorced, neighbors said, and has another son, Ryan Lanza. (AP/TWP)

How to Fix an Escalator It takes skill. And Metro’s training lab is the place to learn.
Landover, Md.
At the end of a long corridor in a
building the length of three foot-
ball fields, engineers and techni-
cians are trying to find solutions to
one of the Metro system’s most vex-
ing problems: escalators and ele-
vators that won’t go up and down.
Housed in the transit agency’s
service complex in Landover, Md.,
Metro’s escalator/elevator training
lab is equipped with more than
$1 million worth of equipment. It
is where Metro workers learn the
ins and outs of maintaining and
troubleshooting the system’s 588
escalators and 283 elevators.
Broken escalators are a chron-
ic complaint among Metro riders
and a perpetual headache for Metro
officials. Even though WMATA
has poured millions of dollars into
repairs, maintenance and replace-
ment, out-of-service escalators
remain a problem.
Even recently replaced ones are
not trouble-free. In their fi rst few
months of operation, three esca-
lators at the south entrance of the
Dupont Circle station have expe-
rienced about 20 outages ranging
from 10 minutes to two days. And
while Metro officials maintain
that such occurrences are part of
a “breaking-in” period, that is of
little comfort to riders.
Offi cials opened the training
lab in 2006 to have a place to offer
hands-on training. Previously, offi -
cials had to take escalators and ele-
vators out of service in order to give
workers the experience required
to do the job.
Escalator/elevator instructor Bobby Mizelle addresses members of Fairfax County Fire & Rescue at Metro’s escalator/elevator lab and repair center Dec. 10.

Outage UpdateA check of Metro’s website Sun-day showed 546 escalators working, 19 undergoing sched-uled maintenance and 23 in un-expected outages. Of the sys-tem’s elevators, four were out of service for scheduled mainte-nance and two were in unexpect-ed outages. (EXPRESS)
Let’s Do Shots! We’re spreading our wings to Instagram here at DC Rider,
and we’re looking for submissions. Have you ever spotted something that you just
had to take a picture of while riding Metro (bus included)? That’s what we’re look-
ing for. Post your shots and tag us @ExpressDCrider. Then keep an eye out to see
if your submission makes it into the paper. Witty captions or clever descriptions,
including where your pic was taken, will improve your odds. Start snapping.
“The big benefit allows us to
troubleshoot problems without hav-
ing to interrupt service,” said Rodri-
go Bitar, head of Metro’s escalator
and elevator division.
Two elevators and an escalator
dominate the two-story room, which
is open 24 hours a day, seven days a
week to allow technicians the free-
dom to work as long as they choose.
The equipment has clear sides
so that workers — and visitors —
can see the guts of the machinery.
The escalator is a Westinghouse
Modular 100, the most common
model in the Metro system and
one that comes with a long history
of problems.
Metro was the f irst transit
authority to open such a facility,
Bitar said. Today, more are follow-
ing WMATA’s lead. New York’s Met-
ropolitan Transportation Authority
opened an escalator training lab in
2009, and Philadelphia’s Southeast-
ern Pennsylvania Transportation
Authority is halfway through con-
struction of its lab, which is expect-
ed to be fi nished next year and has
begun training workers.
Each month, about 200 to
300 people go through Metro’s
training and refresher courses.

is forgetting that 2013 will bring

With two games left, the NFL’s leading rusher is now just
188 yards away from 2,000 and 294 away from breaking
Eric Dickerson’s single-season record. Peterson rushed for
212 yards, including an 82-yard score, in a 36-22 win over

Chris Harris, CB, Broncos
Late in the first half, the Ravens had an opportunity to cut
into a 10-point deficit. But Harris stepped in front of Anquan

a momentum-changing touchdown. The Broncos went on to
a 34-17 victory, their ninth-straight win.
Drew Brees, QB, Saints
After throwing one touchdown and seven interceptions in

threw for 307 yards and four scores in a 41-0 win.
Arian Foster, RB, Texans
The Colts’ defense held Foster out of the end zone, but the

They’ve both played superheroes.

what unites “Les Miserables” co-stars

most is a deep, some might even say
geeky, love of musical theater.

Musical ardor does not always bur-

But in Tom Hooper’s new film of the
famed musical, opening Christmas

“Rumors” is split almost down
the middle between two types of
songs: more traditional fare like
“Mama Told Me,” a gleeful funk jam
that makes wise use of a frequently
miscast Kelly Rowland; and slower,
synthier, blip-and-bloop-type offer-
ings spearheaded by the cool kids.
The latter can get weird, as
on “Shoes for Running,” featur-
ing B.o.B. and the strange stoner
kid from Wavves, two people who
should probably never be placed
in proximity to each other. It’s
hazy and impenetrable, a noble
experiment, even when it’s a mess.

Benedict Cumberbatch had a busy
24 hours last week. The British actor
was nominated for a Golden Globe
on Thursday, was chased by the
paparazzi in London and unveiled
the first nine minutes of next year’s
“Star Trek Into Darkness” on Friday.
At a special IMAX presentation
of the footage in London, Cumber-
batch’s menacing character John
Harrison was introduced early
on. Cumberbatch isn’t allowed to
reveal much about the plot, but
the 36-year-old does admit that he
auditioned for the role of Harrison
— whom he describes as “a phe-
nomenal one-man weapon of mass
destruction” — on an iPhone in his
friend’s kitchen.
How did it feel seeing your face so big
on that screen?
I look away when it’s me, I don’t
like being my own audience. It’s
very weird. … You probably
saw my nostril hairs, count-
ed how many pores I’ve got
on my nose and which one
of my teeth is wonky.
It’s obviously in the great tradition
of having an English baddie.
I’m following in the very hallowed
footsteps of [Jeremy] Irons, [Alan]
Rickman and Tom Hiddleston, my
great friend in “The Avengers.”
There are a few of us who have
done it before, it stretches back as
old as time. … It’s hugely flattering
but you’re not going to see me do
a whole raft of villains after this.
Have you celebrated your Golden
Globe nomination for best actor in
a miniseries for “Sherlock?”
I went out with my niece, who is
my [personal assistant] Emily,
and we got papped [followed by
paparazzi] to the point that I
couldn’t actually see and I had
to put my head down and just
blink a couple of times. …› Poor
girl, she’s never experienced that
before — I’ve never experienced
that — like 15 of them hang-

appearances here, though, Takei’s characters are not the same. (TRIBUNE MEDIA)
1600 Penn Television’s newest take on the White House gets a sneak preview prior to its
official Jan. 10 premiere. Bill Pullman has played president before (“Independence Day’’), but he puts a comedic spin on the Oval Office as a chief executive whose family affairs are as critical to him as affairs of state. Especially perturbing to him is his eldest son (Josh Gad, left, “The Book of Mormon’’), who’s just returned home.
Take It All After a week when this Howie Mandel-hosted game show aired almost every night, it wraps up its run with players again going for big-money prized in a high-tech variation on “Secret Santa.”

In “Picture Paris,” Julia Louis-Dreyfus goes on an “Eat Pray Love”-style sabbatical.

predictable. Not only when it
comes to plots, but the format and
length of its offerings. Sitcoms
uncoil like clockwork within a
22-minute frame. Crime series
show us a victim, some clues, an
investigation that may include a
few red herrings and even a trial
before a tidy resolution — all in
under 50 minutes.
The little, offbeat movie “Picture
Paris” breaks quite a few rules. For
starters, it’s narrated in French with
subtitles.
And it follows, and lampoons, the
kinds of stories found in such movies
as “Under the Tuscan Sun” and “Eat
Pray Love” — gorgeous romantic
travelogues filled with stunning
scenery, celebrating a woman of
a certain age, played here by Julia
Louis-Dreyfus, who rediscovers
life, love, lust and fulfillment amid
splendor and culture.
And it does so in less than 29
minutes!
Directed by Louis-Dreyfus’
husband, Brad Hall, “Picture Paris”
is a subversive delight.
Louis-Dreyfus stars as a middle-
aged mom suffering from empty-
nest syndrome who embarks on a
full-blown plan to take a romantic,
life-changing vacation, but things
soon go awry. The plot packs a
lot of action and surprise twists
into its sprint toward the End —
or “Fin,” as they say in France.

‘Girl’ RevealedAfter six seasons, Serena (Blake Lively, above) and her high-liv-ing Upper East Side friends and relatives bid farewell with the two-hour series finale of “Gos-sip Girl” (8 p.m., CW). There’s cer-tainly been plenty of drama and high emotions within the group, so don’t expect them to go quiet-ly into that good night — but do expect Gossip Girl to be identi-fied, once and for all. “If they ever do another live version of the podcast
I will happily attend, I just hope next time they do it they do it in a space dedicated to doing the
show. There was way too much going on there to make it fully enjoyable.”
— MORETHANMEH.WORDPRESS.COM thought that Saturday’s
Sale-A-Bration event at NPR,
coupled with a live broadcast
of Pop Culture Happy Hour,
created a cramped atmosphere
at the station’s headquarters.
“Is it weird that as an adult
all I want for #Christmas is what I didn’t
want as a kid? I’d be good with undies sweaters
and socks, for real”
— @AAFROMOZ offers up some
hints on what he wants to see
under the tree next week.
“It was understated, and pretty beautiful, and it struck just
the right note before going on
with the comedy.”— RICK PORTER AT BLOG.ZAP2IT.COM/FROM
INSIDETHEBOX comments on the cold
open for NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,”
which acknowledged the tragedy at
Sandy Hook Elementary School by fea-
turing the New York City Children’s
Choir singing “Silent Night.”
“I used to live in Washington Heights. Why
would I wanna watch a reality
show about it tho? Try again MTV.”
— @THELATIFAH can’t under-
stand the programming deci-
sion behind the show “Washing-
ton Heights,” which the network
bills as a “docu-series [that] will
follow nine friends as they
struggle to make it big in
New York City.”
“So Mike Wise’s show is gone from
106.7 but Lavar [Arrington]’s is still going? #thingsIdonotunderstand”
— @GMUHOOPS isn’t sure
why Wise, sports col-
umnist for The Wash-
ington Post, is no lon-
ger going to do his
daily radio show. Wise
announced the news
Friday.

Improvedepressivesymptoms faster?
NIH researchers seek depressed persons ages 18-65(unipolar or bipolar) to enroll in a research study involvingan experimental drug when compared to placebo. The studyseeks to better understand and evaluate the mechanisms inthe brain that are related to rapid antidepressantimprovement.
This is a 6-to 8-week outpatient and inpatient research study.Research is conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda,Maryland. Understanding how the rapid reduction of symptomsworksmay help us design better antidepressants.
