• Expressionistic films are dark and creepy.• The earliest films that were expressionistic in

style were monster movies.• They can be unpredictable • The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was one of the first

of these films.

• Compare this to the Beckman work.• This is dark and creepy.• There are geometric shaped shadows that have been painted on the ground.• The buildings look like they belong in a funhouse. • Nothing is straight. • The tops of doors and bottoms of windows are slanted.
