  • The Institute of Law, Nirma University believes not only in preparing competitive and competent legal

professionals, but also equally focuses on developing effective, responsible and visionary citizens who are

capable of adding value to the society through community interventions. In keeping with the vision and

mission of the Institute, we go beyond the basic curriculum to contribute to the betterment of the society

through our clinical programs and other community engagement. Our understanding of justice emerges

from and extends to the community and therefore we coach our students so that they are equipped to deal

with issues with an analytical and critical perspective of the community. We use our intellectual resources for

community good through our Legal Aid Clinic and Sabarmati Jail Project and plethora of other small

    initiatives.

The nobility of the legal profession can only be maintained when we understand the importance of imparting

free legal Aid to the needy and we are committed to our mission to ensure that no person is ever deprived of

    Justice.

Students are engaged with the community through various interventions like the Legal Aid Clinic, NSS, Social

Engineering Organization and various enrichment courses. Students are encouraged to identify legal

remedies for recurrent problems through new legislation, improvements in government services and

benefits and assisting community-based groups. Faculty members and students have been actively engaged

in such activity as an embedded system of teaching/learning at ILNU. Through all these activities we seek to

acquaint our students with the premises of a plethora of social disadvantages and strategies for dealing with

the needs of the deprived groups.

I express gratitude on behalf of the faculty to our students and alumni who played a foundational role in

facilitating smooth and effective community engagement. Their concerted efforts have been fruitful

  • (2016-2020)The Institute is associated with Extension and Institutional Social Responsibilities (E&ISR)

activities, since its inception on 18 August, 2007. In the first two years, the Institute has focused on organising

tree plantation and blood donation camps; with some of the activities undertaken by students through their thfirst internship with NGOs. The Institute established a Legal Aid Clinic on 9 March 2009. Since then, the clinic

is counselling indigent persons who approach us. It was felt necessary to expand social activities outside the

university. In 2009-10, the Institute had organised many of the programmes on legal awareness and legal

literacy in Ahmedabad city and rural areas of the State. On 30 July, 2011, the Institute started a first of its kind,

Permanent Legal Aid Clinic at Sabarmati Central Jail. As on June 2019, the clinic has counselled 3500 under-

trial prisoners and assisted 542 needy persons in getting advocates through the Gujarat Legal Service

authority. The ILNU, besides legal aid, legal literacy and awareness, has taken up social responsibility to help

the society by donating blood, planting trees, implementing government policies like Swachh Bharat

Abhiyan, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and helping needy children by providing bags, books, and uniforms in

collaboration with NGOs. The Institute has also focused on Community Empowerment Drive under Mission

    Sangharsh and NSS.

  • The Legal Aid Clinic, ILNU was set up to execute the

policy and directions of the National Legal Services

Authority. It aims to provide free legal aid to the poor,

the needy and other members of the weaker sections

of the society. It also aims to sensitize the public and

create awareness about their legal rights and duties by

carrying out social welfare activities. The Legal Aid

Clinic, ILNU also recognizes that there is a dire need to

direct these awareness activities more specifically

towards the illiterate as well as those who are living in

remote, rural and backward areas of the state. Article

39 A of the Constitution states that the State is

responsible for the operation of the legal system. The

State should promote justice equally to all citizens. It

should also provide free legal aid by suitable

legislation or schemes. This should be done to ensure

that opportunities for seeking justice are not denied

to any citizen because of economic or physical

disadvantage. Article 14 and 22 (1) also make it

obligatory for the State to ensure equality before the

law and also ensure that a legal system which

promotes justice on the basis of equal opportunity to

all is in place. The Legal Aid Clinic, ILNU strives to

ensure that our constitutional pledge is fulfilled in its

letter and true spirit; and equal justice is made

available to the poor, the downtrodden and the

    weaker sections of the society.
