EXTENSION FUNDRAISING SESSIONFOR VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF
December 20, 2012
Draft Agenda1. Receiving/Spending Gift Funds from
University Park2. They made a gift….now what3. Sessions for 2013
What’s on your mind?• What would you like to learn from this
session today?• I.E. - Fundraising tools, processes, rules of the
road, expectations, best practices, how to get started, how to make an ask, how to finesse a relationship…….etc.
1. Receiving Gifted Funds from UP• Good news – we are able to spend
endowment proceeds as we had in the past• Each spring District Directors are alerted
about the amount endowment proceeds available to counties on July 1st.
• After July 1st an email request can be made to Melody Witherite for the endowment proceeds to be sent to the county to be used to fund the local program.
1. Receiving Gifted Funds from UP• Reporting back– There will likely be a requirement to share in
some formal way how the endowment funds were used.
– Similar to the feedback required by many foundations
– More information about this process will be shared with District Directors in the coming months
1. Receiving Gifted Funds from UP• Non endowed funds (annual gift funds) are sent
directly to the recipient counties on a quarterly basis from the Extension Business Office– If you need the funds sooner, email Melody Witherite
• Gifts of $5000 or more are not available to be spent or disbursed for 90 days.– if you need access to the funds sooner, please alert
the Extension Business Office prior to the gift being received if possible
1. Spending Endowment Proceeds• Scholarships are ONLY to be awarded to PSU
students.• Scholarships can ONLY be awarded from
Scholarship Endowments (only a couple for 4-H)
• Scholarship awards can only be transferred into the student’s PSU bursar account
1. Spending Endowment Proceeds• Educational Awards recognize achievement
while an awardee was an active 4-H member• Funds are giving directly to the awardee, not to
an educational institution• Educational Awards are not NEED BASED• Applications and terminology must reflect the
change from Scholarships to Educational Awards• Funds are transferred from the endowment to
the county
2. They made a gift….now what• Send a gift acknowledgement– They need it for IRS backup– We need to show our appreciation
• The value of personal contact– Call from a volunteer– Handwritten thank you from a beneficiary– Annual letter sharing how their gift (or all the
gifts) impacted your program
