Tjark’s Summer Intern Reflection 

Coming into a new county can be very intimidating, but serving as the Vernon County  4H Summer Assistant has been very satisfying.  The 4H families have been polite in all aspects of this internship.  Throughout the summer, I have had the opportunity to help organize programs 

including Cloverbud Days, Rocket & Science Night, a Sheep Showing and Fitting Clinic, and many more.  Having the opportunity to help organize these programs has taught me many skills that will transfer over to my studies as I continue towards a degree in Agriculture Education. 

Connecting with the 4H youth and volunteers in the county was a goal of mine at the beginning of the summer. Having the experience of visiting a significant number of the 4H clubs helped broaden my views on how different clubs organize their meetings around the strengths of their members.  Another great experience was driving the State Youth Conference delegates to Madison, and having an opportunity to teach with Colleen Pulvermacher during the conference.  Colleen did an excellent job demonstrating how to teach in a professional manner. 

Besides organizing programs, the Summer Assistant position has allowed me to enhance my teaching skills by working with 4H Leaders and Youth.  It is great to see a county that has so many enthusiastic leaders that are willing to help the youth learn.  One new opportunity I had was organizing the Clothing Revue with Karen EhleTraastad.  Throughout my years in 4H, I never participated in the sewing project, and it was very rewarding to see the talented sewers that Vernon County has to offer.  I also had a chance to work with Tim Rehbein and the local Agriculture teachers to put on Tractor Safety.  It was fascinating to see that program from the teachers prospective. 

Looking back at the summer, most of the experiences have been outstanding.  Working with the camp counselors from the area was an eye opening experience because I saw their roles and expectations from a different perspective.  Having the opportunity to facilitate a personality training with the 4H club leaders allowed me to practice teaching with a new audience.  I was disappointed by the low turn out for the Youth Ambassador events.  It  is discouraging when you plan a series of meeting and programs with the youth and very few of them follow through.  Following through on commitments is a life skill that every student needs.  On the other hand, I was glad to see the larger turn out at the Etiquette Dinner. 

I would like to thank all the 4H members, club leaders, and 4H Volunteers that made my time in Vernon County very enjoyable.  The staff at the UWEX Office was very welcoming.  I would like to thank Brenda Adams and Cindy Daniels for all the support and knowledge they shared about working with Extension.  Beyond the office, I would like to say thank you to the Ag & Extension Committee and the Fair Board for their support.  I would also like to say thank you to Philip and Jacinta Henden for welcoming me into their home for the summer.  The Henden family has helped make this summer special.  As I wrap up my summer, I am packing for a fun filled summer camp in the Dells, and preparing for the Sheep Showing and Fitting Clinic on August 4 th .

Enterprise Eagles—Sabrina Servais June— Our last meeting was held June 29 at 5pm at the Chaseburg Park Shelter.  23 members and leaders were present including Carolyn Solverson, the county fair Superintendant of Photography.  The meeting was called to order by Vice President Zach Servais.  Brittney Mislivecek and Samantha Tunks led the pledges.  I gave the Secretary's report and it was approved.  Zach gave the Treasurer's report since our Treasurer was absent.  It was also approved.  Old business discussed was the garden project and how well it is doing.  We also discussed the Dairy Breakfast and thanked everyone who came to help.  New business discussed was our group's canoe trip planning and raffle tickets.  There were many announcements about summer activities in the county.  The meeting was then adjourned.  Carolyn then talked about how to take and how to pick out a perfect picture for the fair.  We passed out disposable cameras for everyone and took pictures for the "lines and Designs" category.  Our next meeting is to be held Sunday, July 10 at 6pm at the Chaseburg Village Hall. 

July—The meeting on July 10th was called to order by Vice President Zachary Servais. Roll call was 31 present. Brittney Mislivececk and Grant Dayton led pledges. As usual, I gave the secretary's report and Jake gave the treasurer's report, both were approved.  There was no Old Business. New Business was a disscusion on the IRS changes. Then we talked about our canoe trip date, we decided to have earlier officer elections this year and handed out fair books. Zach then adjourned the meeting.

Lucky Clovers—Brady Nigh July—The July 11th meeting of the Lucky Clovers 4 H club was held at Side Hollow Park.  Community Service Project was done that night picking up garbage around the walking trail.  Rachel Falkers updated the club on the Clothing Revue.  Josie Wiltrout  updated the club about the State Qualifying Horse Show.  The older youth will get together on July 21st at the Walleser’s home to plan out the club calendar for the next year. Our next meeting will be July 25th. August—Meeting of the Lucky Clovers 4H club was held one week early on July 25th, due to 4H camp. The club is planning a community service project to build benches and a handicapped accessible table for the fair grounds.  A work day is scheduled for August 10th, at the Harnish home.  Election of officers was held for the 20112012 4H year.  The new executive board will revise our club constitution.  On September 10th, each member may pick up their fair entry tickets from Dr. Elwing’s home form 10:30 amnoon.  The next meeting will be held at the Retreat Sportsman club on October 3rd at 7:00 p.m.  The members will plan out a fall event at this meeting. 

Seas Branch Smithies— Olivia Ahnen July—The Seas Branch Smithies 4H club held a meeting on July 11, 2011. Our meeting was held at Davidson Park in Westby. The meeting was called to order by Courtney Moser (our president was absent). The Flag Pledge was led by Riley See and the 4H pledge was led by Brynn Cade. The secretary’s report was read by Olivia Ahnen. The treasurer’s report was read by Brett Cade. For old business, Meagan Bjornstad will participate at the State 4H Gymkhana competition and will be representing Vernon County. In new business, Jane Anderson talked about the Parliamentary Procedure Entries and Contest. Also we received books for entrees for the fair. Our raffle ticket money is due the next meeting. We took a vote to decide if our club will do the Stanley fundraiser, and we will. The program was Scott Vatland  who came and showed us around the trails in Davidson Park and Tjark Sattler came to talk about himself. The servers for this month were Shaha, Hall, Brown Vatland, and Johnson. Ryla Vatland motioned to adjourn the meeting and Matthew Bjornstad second it.

La Crosse County Horse Project hosts 3rd Annual 4H Champ Show Saturday, August 27, 2011 

Registration Deadline Aug. 12th—Judge Dan Grunewald

Vernon County Fair Reminder For All Animal Projects 

All animals must come in the east gate of the fairgrounds where they will be checked by a 

vet before entering the grounds.  You must also have the Vernon County Fair Animal ID and Vet CheckIn information along with Health 

papers relating to the animal.

Poultry Project News Reminder: If you plan to show birds at the fair, you need to have all birds from last year and before tested for Pollorum Typhoid. If you had no birds on your property and purchased new 

birds this year, you must mail a copy of your NPIP certificate, along with an Associate Flock Application to Madison to receive an Associate Flock Certificate.  This should be mailed no later than Friday, August 12th. The fair will be here before we know it , so if you need help with testing please contact me immediately to schedule a time for this to take place.  Deadline for testing will be  Friday, August 12th.  You  may also contact me should you have any other poultry related questions.

Reminder! Sheep Fitting and Showing Clinic 

August 4, 2011 6:30 p.m.—8:00 p.m. 

Vernon County Fairgrounds 

Have  your  sheep  showing  skills  became  bah, bah, bah? Then  the Sheep Fitting and Showing Clinic  is  the  thing  for  you!  This  interactive clinic will  teach you  techniques on fitting your market  lamb  correctly,  and  how  to  grab  the judge’s  attention  in  the  show  ring.    The  clinic will  be  taught  by  Tjark  Sattler,    4H  summer intern.  If you have any questions regarding the clinic. Please  feel  free  to  contact Tjark  at  637 5276  or  tjark.sattler@vernoncounty.org.  This event is open to the public. Vernon  County  Fair  is  just  around  the  corner. Do  not  miss  this  opportunity  to  sharpen  your showing skills!

VERNON COUNTY 4H STATE AND NATIONAL AWARD TRIPS 

November will be here before you know it!  Please see below for brief award trip descriptions. It is time to start thinking about taking advantage of these great opportunities! 

The application process—The application process is easy.  The application consist of two parts, a cover letter and resume. Complete instructions and sample applications can be found on our website, http:// vernon.uwex.edu. Upon receipt of your application the Recognition Committee will send your 4H club leader a confidential recommendation based on your involvement, attitude and contribution to the 4H club. All applicants will be required to interview with the Recognition Committee as a final step in the process. Don’t worry—help is available to prepare you for the interview.  Colleen will be there to offer interviewing tips right before the interviews are conducted in midNovember. Concerned about cost? The 4H Leader Parent Federation generously funds a portion of award trip expenses, with the expectation that youth will sell 4H radio ads as a fundraiser for future trips. Additional scholarships are available to families with financial need. All requests are confidential. Please contact  Colleen Pulvermacher, 4H Youth Development Educator, (6375276) with any questions. Applications can be emailed, faxed (6375504) or sent by surface mail. Due date is  November 1, 2011.

Where: UW Madison Campus When: June , 2012 

Qualifications: Be  in 7 th 10 th  grade at  the  time of selection.  (Art Team, Drama Company,  Photo  Team,  Showcase  Singers  and  Youth  Leader Council members may be 9 th 13 th grade); be a 4H member or member of another Extension program; carry county approval through time of award trip. 

National 4  H Conference Where: Washington D.C. 

When: April, 2012 Six (6) youth are selected to attend this working conference held at  the  National  4  H Center.  Each  participant  selects  an  issue and works with other youth from across  the country  to develop plans that help direct future 4  H programming. Qualifications: •  Be in 10 th 12 th grade during the program. Maximum age 18 as of January 1, 2012; 

•  be selected at the county level; •  carry county approval through time of award trip. 

Space Camp Where: Huntsville, Alabama 

When: April , 2012 Delegates  participate  in  handson  mock  space  missions  and other  activities  in  this  NASA  program  while  exchanging  ideas with youth from across Wisconsin. Qualifications: •  Be in 6 th 8th grade at time of trip. Maximum age 15 at time of trip; 

•  carry county approval through time of trip; 

Citizenship Washington Focus Where: Washington D.C. When: June & July,  2012 

Approximately 200 Wisconsin 4  H Youth are selected to attend this  leadership  program  held  at  the  National  4H  Center. Participants  learn  the  importance  of  civic  and  social responsibilities  as  they  relate  to  the  development  of  better citizens  and  leaders.  The  week  consists  of  participatory workshops,  speakers,  committee  work,  field  trips  and  social events. Qualifications: 10 th 12 th grade at time of selection. Minimum age 15 during trip; be selected at the county level; 

National 4  H Congress Where: Atlanta, Georgia 

When: Nov. , 2012 Delegates participate in self  development seminars, tours, and a service  project,  while  exchanging  ideas with  youth  from  across the country. Qualifications: •  Be in 10 th 12th grade at time of selection. Maximum age 18 as of January 1, 2011; 

•  be selected at the county level; •  carry county approval through time of award trip. 

National 4H Dairy Conference Where: UWMadison Campus 

When: October  2012 About  200  youth  from  4H  dairy  projects  around  the  U.S.  and Canada  congregate  in  Madison  for    the  National  4H  Dairy Conference held annually in conjunction with World Dairy Expo. Qualifications: Must have participated in 4H dairy project for at least 3 years; Be in 10 th 12 th grade during program. Max age 18 as of Jan. 1. Have outstanding dairy accomplishment records; May  not  exhibit  animals  at World  Dairy  Expo  or  participate  in National 4H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest while at National 4H

Each 4H family is asked to contribute at least one twocrusted HOMEMADE pie no smaller than nine inches on the day your club is scheduled to work. It is important that each family bring a pie so we don’t run out. PLEASE LABEL YOUR PIES AS TO WHAT KIND THEY ARE. Health regulations prohibit us from serving cream or singlecrust pies.

Remember that members must be 12 years old to work in the food stand AND adult help is NEEDED and APPRECIATED. One half of the 4H club workers need to be adults, as younger youth cannot work in the kitchen.

2011 VERNON COUNTY FAIR 4H FOOD STAND SCHEDULE

Try 4H Arts Camp!  It's fun!  It's creative!  It's cool! 

4H Arts Camp is a statewide overnight arts experience for youth in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.  Youth campers and adult chaperones participate in six hourlong exploratory sessions in communications, music, photography, drama, art, and juggling.   The sessions are handson and active and are held at various sights throughout camp, including outdoors.  That evening everyone will come together to explore a special cultural arts project created especially for this year’s Camp!. 4H Arts Camp is at Camp Upham Woods.  Adult chaperones and participants stay in the cabins on cabin hill.  Camp begins Saturday, October 8 at 9:00 a.m. and ends on Sunday , October 9 at 3:00 p.m. Fill out this application and return it to the 4H Youth Development Staff member in your county for his/her signature.  Applications and payment must be received in Madison by September 1.

Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival September 911, 2011 Youth Sweepstakes 

The purpose of the Youth Sweepstake program is to encourage youth attending the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival to participate in as many educational and exhibition events as possible and to expand their knowledge and proficiency in sheep production.

Here’s What’s Cookin’ September/October Recipe 

From the Kitchen of Jayne Anderson Seas Branch Smithies 4H Club Leader 

Pineapple Pretzel Fluff 

Ingredients: 1 cup coarsely crushed pretzels                                  1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted 1 cup sugar, divided                                                    1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 1 can (20 ounces) crushed pineapple, drained          1 carton (12 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed 

Preparation: Drain pineapple.  In a bowl, combine pretzels, butter and 1/2 cup sugar.  Press into a 13 x 9 inch baking pan (it will not quite seem to make it—don’t worry but spread it to meet the far edges).  Bake at 400 for 7 minutes.  Cool.  Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and remaining sugar until creamy.  Fold in pineapple and whipped topping; chill until serving.  Break pretzel mixture into small pieces; stir into pineapple mixture just before serving.
