Adhesives as crucial ingredient in the EIFS mixIn External Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS) applications the adhesive is an important part of the complete thermo insulation system. Here mainly EPS panels are mounted to the wall with a 1k or 2k adhesive. In such adhesives the polymer dispersion increases flexibility of the adhesive in order to withstand movements of the “soft” EPS on the hard substrate (e. g. bricks or mortar).
In addition the polymer improves the peel adhesion to substrate and EPS.
See below for typical starting formulations. Adhesive should be mixed with 20 – 30% cement. The pot live is 2-3 hours.

As usual 1k is preferred because it is easier to handle. 2k cementitious adhesives are used if the drying conditions are difficult (e. g. high humidity, low temperatures). The cement absorbs the water from the system, which allows fast drying even under damp conditions.
1k systems need longer drying time but can be formulated to be more flexible and can be stored for longer times. Both systems have to fulfil the ETAG regulations which include burning tests and tests of mechanical properties.
