PENR ITH PANTHERS VS CANTERBURY BULLDOGS

KICKOFF: SATURDAY 5.30PM @ ANZ STADIUM | REFEREES: GERARD SUTTON & GAVIN REYNOLDS | VIDEO REFEREES: SHAYNE HAYNE & JUSTIN MORGAN | TV: FOX 5.30PM | RADIO: 2GB 5.30PM

FORGET THE FIRST SUNDAY in October.

For the Penrith Panthers, their grand fi nal comes this Saturday afternoon

against the Canterbury Bulldogs. This round 25 match will be played at

the same venue as the season decider on October 6, and for the Panthers, it holds just as much importance.

Penrith kept their season alive with an impressive 28-12 demolition of Brisbane last Friday night, and a win against the Bulldogs will move them one step closer to qualifying

for the fi nals – almost unthinkable a fortnight ago when many predicted they wouldn’t win another game.

The Bulldogs are coming off a loss to Souths but fought hard throughout the game and will feel they did enough to prove they’re well and truly alive in this competition.

But the boys from Belmore have been dealt a big blow with former Panther Frank Pritchard hit with a shoulder charge

suspension by the NRL judiciary this week. It further weakens the Bulldogs forward pack, which is already without Sam Kasiano (knee) and Greg Eastwood (hand).

In fact, I’d say the Panthers go into this one on Saturday at 5.30pm with a stronger pack than the Dogs – Tim Grant had his best game all year against the Broncos last Friday night, Sam McKendry is starting to fi nd his feet again and Sika Manu is primed for a big match. The form of Nathan Smith, too, was impressive last weekend.

“I think the whole Bulldogs squad is dangerous,” Smith said.

“They’ve got pretty good go-forward and a bit of skill as well.”

Smith’s assessment is fair but the Bulldogs are also without livewire fullback Ben Barba for this clash, which takes out a huge threat to the Panthers, who struggle to defend broken play – a Barba specialty.

To beat Canterbury, Penrith need to limit their mistakes and keep the Dogs on the

back foot. This can be done by ensuring James Segeyaro – who bagged a hat trick of tries against the Broncos – is injected into the game early.

If he can frustrate Michael Ennis, drag in a couple of penalties and have the Bulldogs defending close to their line regularly, he will emerge as a key factor in this game.

Luke Walsh’s kicking game is important, but his tactic must be to earn repeat sets and keep the ball in play. The Panthers are looking fi t at the moment, whilst the

Bulldogs have a tendency to switch off at times, particularly when under constant pressure, and limiting their opportunities to re-group will be important.

You have to wonder where the mindsets of these two clubs will be on Saturday.

We know that Penrith will be switched on. On the back of two big wins over the Warriors and Broncos, their confi dence is high and their season is on the line. Ivan Cleary will more than have them ready.

Canterbury sit in sixth spot on the ladder and can only fi nish as high as fi fth, with the top four now an impossible task.

Therefore, perhaps it’s not about who wants it more, but who needs it more – and if that’s the case, there can be little doubt that the Panthers need it more.

It is important to realise that with Manly likely to be well and truly locked into fourth place heading into the fi nal round, there is a strong chance they will rest key players for the round 26 clash at Brookvale Oval, a game

many believe will be Penrith’s downfall in terms of a fi nals berth.

While the Panthers can’t have that in the back of their minds on Saturday, it’ll be something to smile about come 7.15pm on Saturday if Penrith walk off the ANZ Stadium turf with the two crucial competition points against the Bulldogs.

And who knows, perhaps it won’t be the last time they’ll grace ANZ Stadium this season.

Penrith primed for BulldogsPREVIEW BYTROY DODDS

Of the 26 games played between Penrith and Canterbury since the NRL was formed in 1998, the Panthers have won 13 of them. There’s been one draw in the mix, too.

THE PANTHERS HAVE FINISHED off their 2014 recruitment in style with the announcement that former Penrith

junior Peter Wallace will return to the club where it all began for the next three seasons.

The St Marys junior played 20 games for the Panthers early in his career before joining the Broncos in 2008, where he’s currently played 137 fi rst grade games, mostly in the halves.

He had left Penrith after it was clear he wasn’t going to secure a permanent fi rst grade spot with Craig Gower in front of him in the number seven jumper.

As it turned out, Gower walked out on the Panthers at the end of the 2007 season, sparking a halves crisis that has never been totally fi xed.

Ironically, Wallace willl return to Penrith to do the job he so desperately wanted to do some fi ve years ago: steer Penrith around the park.

The Panthers announced Wallace’s signing would be the fi nal piece in their recruitment puzzle for next year, joining fellow high profi le Penrith newcomers Jamie Soward, Brent Kite and Elijah Taylor at the foot of the Mountains.

“We’re very excited to have a local junior returning to Panthers,” Penrith General Manager Rugby League, Phil Moss said last Saturday.

“He’s been performing tremendously well for the mighty Brisbane Broncos for a number of years. Peter is a perfect fi t with the culture that coach Ivan Cleary has created for the Panthers club.”

Broncos head coach Anthony Griffi n praised the tough halfback for his tenure

at the club, a time in which he played four Origin matches for NSW.

“Peter has been a wonderful player at the Broncos,” Griffi n said in statement.

“He has shown application and willingness to work in everything he has done here. I have a huge amount of respect for him as a person and a player.”

There was speculation back in May that Wallace would be returning to the Panthers next season to partner fellow recruit Jamie Soward in the halves.

Things went quiet when a deal to release the 27-year-old a year early from his Brisbane contract fell over.

However after some poor on-fi eld performances over the past few months things changed quickly for Wallace and he was told he wasn’t required at the Broncos next season.

This news allowed Penrith to pounce and fi nally get their man.

Wallace made his NRL debut for the Panthers against the Canberra Raiders back in 2005 as a fresh-faced 19-year-old.

However, it wasn’t until March 2007 that Wallace made a name for himself after he famously kicked a 44-metre fi eld goal in golden point extra time to beat the reigning champion Broncos 29-28.

With Wallace now on board, there will be plenty of competition for a spot in Penrith’s halves next season with Soward, Lachlan Coote, Isaac John, Tom Humble, Will Smith and Luke Capewell all looking to fi ght it out.

That said, there remains speculation over the future of Coote, who has been linked to the Cowboys next season. Coote, a local junior, is under contract for one more year.

THE SHARKS HAVE CEMENTED their place in the top eight with a strong win over the competition leaders and

unless form deserts either side this week, the Rabbits and Roosters will hopefully head into the fi nal round sporting full strength sides with the winner taking home the Minor Premiership.

It was great to see the Panthers fi nish off their home games with a strong victory over the Broncos on Friday night, keeping their slim fi nal chances alive though wins against the Dogs and Manly away will be a tough ask. If they do win both I believe they will sneak into eighth spot.

If they don’t I believe that of the top eight only the Cowboys are in danger of slipping

out if they lose against the Sharks this week. The Warriors would then be my tip to sneak in should they win against the Raiders and Dragons.

On the Panthers it is fantastic to see Peter Wallace come back to the club he should never have been forced to leave. It is a good position for Ivan to be in and I am sure means no egos next year with competition now in place over the key positions with Soward, Coote, John and Wallace all capable of fi lling the halves role.

Let’s hope Kevin Kingston (pictured) can lead the Panthers to a successful fi nal fortnight of the season.

Why players have still continued to shoulder charge despite the rule changes

has dismayed me but given the Kade Snowden charge surely it should now stop players cold. While I don’t believe that it was intentional, it was more lazy than anything, unfortunately for Kade he allowed the NRL to draw a line in the sand. Now the line has been drawn the NRL needs to be consistent and make sure any shoulder charge is an automatic 1-2 week suspension.

It is a shame that we will not see Luke Brookes again this season as he was the catalyst for not only a great Tigers win but also helping Benji and Braith play their best games of the year. While everyone is saying not to put pressure on him I think playing two more games this year would have allowed him to build some combinations.

2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

IN AN ERA WHERE NRL coaches are sacked left, right and centre, one coach who battled through the hard times early but

came through it in fi ne fashion is Panthers mentor Ivan Cleary.

The former New Zealand Warriors coach turned Panthers leader coached his 200th NRL game in Penrith’s big win over the Brisbane Broncos last Friday night – a huge achievement in this day and age.

Speaking with Extra Time on his double century milestone, Cleary said it was a good feeling just to still have a job in the NRL.

“It doesn’t feel like I have been around very long… I still feel like I’m learning all the time and I’ve got a lot of learning to go,” he said.

After playing 186 fi rst grade games across four diff erent clubs, the 42-year-old began his coaching life in charge of the Sydney Roosters Premier League side in 2003.

In 2005 Cleary moved across the ditch to New Zealand where he became the assistant coach of the Warriors before taking up the head coaching role at the Auckland-based club from 2006 to 2011.

During his time in New Zealand, Cleary was criticised early but was later praised for re-building the club with talented local juniors who would later go on to be some of the game’s biggest names.

His last day in charge at the Warriors was the 2011 Grand Final, a bitter sweet moment in which his brave side lost to the highly-favoured Manly Sea Eagles 24-10.

In 2012 Cleary was recruited by Panthers boss Phil Gould to re-build another club in desperate need of an overhaul.

Again Cleary was criticised early for allowing Penrith’s biggest stars in Luke Lewis,

Michael Jennings and Michael Gordon to walk at the end of season 2012.

But he has since regained the respect of the fan base for not only recruiting incredibly well but turning around the fortunes of the Panthers on the fi eld at the same time.

Cleary joked when asked what the secret was to his longevity in the game.

“You’ve got to know the right people, I suppose,” he said.

“I’ve been associated with re-building clubs over the years, I still feel like I’m in the same process.”

Penrith captain Kevin Kingston also praised his coach as “outstanding” and one of the best in the business.

“He’s reinvigorated my love for the game and the best compliment you can give to him is the players really want to play for him,” he said.

“You can see by Lewis Brown and Elijah Taylor wanting to follow Ivan wherever he goes to get coached by him. He’s really made an impact on not just this team but this area.”

Cleary said he was humbled by his captain’s generous words.

“Yeah that does make me feel good, that’s the ultimate really if people want to play for you,” he said.

“I don’t know if everyone thinks that way sometimes but I enjoy what I do and hopefully I can be around for a while.”

At 200 games, Cleary is currently ranked sixth in the NRL behind Wayne Bennett, Craig Bellamy, Des Hasler, Matt Elliott and Ricky Stuart.

He’s next aim will be to crack the 300 mark.

THERE’S PERHAPS NO MORE grateful player in the NRL than Penrith second-rower Nathan Smith, who earned

himself a new one-year deal this week. After being on the outer at the club for

most of the season as well as being told he was not wanted for next year, Smith was resigned to the fact that he’d have to play out the rest of his Panthers career in NSW Cup.

However, after a recent string of solid

performances in the NRL plus a professional attitude to boot, Smith was rewarded with a new contract the morning of Penrith’s big win against the Broncos.

“I was initially told I wouldn’t be here next year, so I’m glad they did change their mind because I always wanted to stay,” Smith told Extra Time.

“This year has been majorly frustrating because I didn’t really expect to get another

start before the end of this season, so to be back in fi rst grade is awesome.”

After starting the season with the Panthers, Smith admits his form started to drop, forcing coaching staff to demote the 30-year-old to the NSW Cup where presumably he would fi nish his season.

“It’s alright over in Windsor and it certainly helps when you’re winning,” Smith said.

“It can be tough there because you play at 6pm on a Saturday and the light there is so bad you can’t see a thing, that part of it is hard. But you’re still around the boys that you see every day so that makes it easier.”

Smith admitted he felt a tad envious

knowing he had what it took to play NRL again but at the same time didn’t want to get in the way of the up and comers of the game.

“The blokes that went into my spot played awesome and they deserved to be there,” he said.

“I did that to a couple of guys when I fi rst started as well, so that’s just the way it goes.”

Smith’s recent signing was also a blessing for another reason.

For 18 months Smith has been working as an apprentice electrician with local company HIX Group. Smith said the new deal will now allow him to fi nish his trade.

SIX MONTHS AGO NATHAN SMITH WAS TOLD HE WASN’T WANTED AT PENRITH NEXT SEASON. NOW, THE 30-YEAR-OLD IS CELEBRATING A NEW ONE-YEAR DEAL WITH THE CLUB...

LUKE PRIDDIS

IT WAS AN EMOTIONAL night for Panthers halfback Luke Walsh last Friday. Walshy played his fi nal game on the Penrith

Stadium turf that has brought him so much joy, and pain over the last fi ve or so years. Walsh knows he’s had his knockers over the years, but would take some joy out of knowing that he had plenty of supporters, too. It’s been an up and down ride but we’re sure Walshy will kill it over there in England. Congratulations to him for being so generous with his time during a lap of honour following the game on Friday.

Also on last week’s lap of honour was Clint Newton, who is off to Newcastle next year.

I’m tipping that Sinclair Ford’s John Cooper and Panthers sponsorship man Glenn “Gorgeous” Cox would have been sweating bricks during last Friday night’s half time event when the fi rst nine keys failed to open the major prize – a brand new Ford car. Some were worried that someone had failed to put the winning key in the bag – but fortunately, the lucky last key opened the car and a dedicated Panthers fan walked away with the new wheels.

Congratulations to Lauren, Rihannan and Natalie who have progressed through to our Cheerleader of the Year Grand Final. Stay tuned to our website and Facebook page to

check out how we’re deciding the ultimate winner and don’t forget, the winner will feature on the cover of next week’s edition.

Nathan Smith will be staying at the Panthers after earning a new one year deal with the club. Smith was set to leave the Panthers after being told he could look elsewhere but fortune has fallen his way and he will be around at the foot of the Mountains for another season.

The Panthers were planning on making a major announcement on Wednesday night at a member’s forum, but those nasty Eels from down the road spoiled it. I’m told that the Panthers planned to announce the Peter Wallace signing at the members event at the Chairman’s Lounge, but instead, had to announce it last Saturday morning as Parramatta planned to let the cat out of the bag. The Eels are fuming at missing out on Wallace, who they were chasing hard for in the build-up to 2014.

Expect the Panthers to produce a major assault on memberships for the 2014 season. The club really wants to see a boost in that area particularly given the low crowds at Penrith Stadium this year. Expect to see the re-introduction of The Black Hole (under a new name – The Den) and cheaper season tickets overall.

JUN IOR RUGBY LEAGUE W ITH YVONNE PURTELL

THERE ARE ONLY TWO weekends of junior league remaining for the 2013 regular season before our players move into their summer

sports programs. At this time of the season sportsmanship is all too

important, as is it throughout the season. So what is sportsmanship?

It is being able to treat your teammates, opponents, coaches and offi cials with respect.

It is being able to understand that real winners in sport are those who know how to persevere and behave with dignity, no matter whether you win or lose the game.

For those involved this weekend with our younger players it is also important to remember that young people learn the basics of sportsmanship by observing adults, especially their parents and coaches behaving in a sportsmanlike manner.

Some parents and coaches get so involved in winning and losing or how well their own kids perform that they can lose sight of what’s really important.

They can forget the importance of promoting a sense of good sportsmanship, which is one of the most important goals in kids’ sport. Remember, you are role models.

One for your diary: keep the weekend of September 21 and 22 free, as we will see the Premiers from our U7 to A Grade competitions take on the Premiers from the Parramatta Junior League in the Inaugural Battle of the West Cup.

More details to come!Check out our website penrith.leaguenet.com.au

for full invitational lists for our U15, U16 and U18 trials for the 2014 season.

Good luck to all players who have been invited to these trials in September.

To all the teams involved in Grand Finals this weekend, go out, play hard and most importantly, enjoy yourself!

Feel free to send in your grand fi nal pictures to [email protected] and we’ll do our best to run them in the paper over the coming issues.

YVONNE Purtell is the manager of the Penrith and District Junior Rugby League, nurturing our young footy talent

LOWER GRADES FEATURE STORY

THE WINDSOR WOLVES WILL be aiming for a hat-trick of wins when they take on the bottom placed

Canterbury Bulldogs tonight (Friday) at Windsor Sporting Complex.

The fi fth-placed Wolves have now won two straight games since long-time coach Guy Missio returned to the helm with Garth Brennan returning to the Holden Cup.

Newly re-signed Wolves and Panthers prop Sam Anderson, who made his Panthers NRL debut earlier this year, said both coaches have done equally as well in guiding the side to a fi nals berth this year.

“They are both pretty good coaches but the boys just want to play for each other and not let any other things [off the fi eld] worry them,” he told Extra Time.

“Both Garth and Guy are very good coaches, you wouldn’t say one has done better than the other.”

Last week the Wolves thrashed Mounties 46-26 in what was a typical NSW Cup high-

scoring encounter. 22-year-old Anderson scored a double in the win, bringing his try scoring tally to seven for the season – a somewhat unusual stat for a prop.

“I just put the team’s performance down to hard work and working for each other,” Anderson said.

“If we focus on our defence, we know we can put points on. Our main goal every week is to focus on our defence then our attack will come.”

Newcomer to the side, halfback Luke Capewell, has also been enjoying a great year since transferring from the Brisbane Broncos mid-way through the season.

Capewell said the club’s in a good place at the moment both on and off the fi eld.

“The club is coming off two wins in a row in both the NRL and NSW Cup, so it’s a good place to be at the moment,” he said.

“Our defence is defi nitely something we need to fi x heading into the fi nals, we are certainly working on it each week.”

WINDSOR HAS THEIR SEASON BACK ON TRACK, WITH TWO STRAIGHT WINS AT THE BUSINESS END OF THE YEAR ENSURING PLENTY OF CONFIDENCE HEADING INTO TONIGHT’S CLASH WITH THE BULLDOGS...

THE FOOTY SHOW INS IDER

WITH THE NRL SEASON heating up we are working hard to put some smiles on the faces

of some very deserving children. In partnership with Nissan Navara, ‘The Footy Show’ is set to launch ‘Big Change for Little Champions’. Raising funds for The Starlight Foundation, this initiative is one of the biggest campaigns in the show’s history.

In coming weeks, ‘The Footy Show’ will take a Nissan Navara to Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney.

Here, kids in the hospital, under the watchful eye of The Big Marn, Darryl Brohman, will have the chance to display their creative fl air and have their artwork adorning the car.

With half the car being painted by kids in Brisbane, the custom designed vehicle may even be auctioned off to raise more funds for the great charity –

The Starlight Foundation.Although the car painting is certain to

have the children grinning from ear to ear, we’re not stopping there.

Leading into Thursday, September 19, ‘The Footy Show’ will have all hands on deck as our very own ‘Big Change for Little Champions’ Telethon will be running throughout the show raising funds for The Starlight Foundation.

Here you’ll fi nd some very familiar faces and stars of the NRL, taking your calls all in the name of charity.

Also featuring in the jam-packed edition of ‘The Footy Show’ will be not one, but two very special live performances by singing sensation Jess Mauboy. We’re getting the feeling that this unmissable evening will be a show for the ages. A night fi lled with fi nals footy, live music and smiling faces, what’s not to love?

Stay tuned in coming weeks as we’ll update you on the whereabouts of the Nissan Navara and details for the telethon.

Don’t just sit there come September 19th, pick up your phone and dial ‘The Footy Show’ to raise much needed funds for The Starlight Foundation.

It’s time to get excited; it’s time to make a big change for some very deserving little champions!
