Magnitude of corneal blindness

• Diseases affecting the cornea are a major cause of blindness worldwide, second only to cataract in overall importance.

• Worldwide more than 10 million people are blind from corneal diseases.

• In Nepal more than 40 thousand eyes are blind because of corneal diseases.

• The requirement of corneas in Nepal is about 8000 annually.

• The number of eyes being procured annually is about 300.

• There is a clear gap of about 7700.

What is eye donation

• Eye donation is an act of charity for the benefit of the society and is totally voluntary.

What is eye donation• Eyes that are donated are made use of

after the person’s death,

• The eye donation of the deceased can be authorized by the next of kin even if the deceased did not pledge his/her eyes before death.

Becoming a donor

• It is a simple process.• Discuss your wish to donate with your next-

of-kin.• If you are 18 years or older, just fill out a

Donor Card.• Fill in your name and sign and date the card.• Please sign name in the presence of two

witnesses. Your witness should also sign the card.

Who can donate eyes?

• Eyes can be donated by any person.• Person with the history of hypertension,

diabetes, asthma, tuberculosis etc can donate their eyes.

• Spectacle wearers and people who have undergone cataract surgery in past can donate their eyes.

• There is no age limit for eye donation.

Who can not donate their eyes?

• Death due to Rabies, AIDS, Infectious hepatitis and Septicaemia can not donate their eyes.

Can a living person donate their eyes?

• No, donation from livings persons is not accepted.

Are there any religious conflicts in eye donation?

• There are no religious conflicts on eye donation.

• Eye donation gives a gift of sight to others.

• As such, it is consistent with beliefs and attitudes of all major religious and ethical traditions.

What precautions to be taken after death of a donor?

• Switch off fans.

• Please raise the head of the deceased by about six inches, if possible.

• Ensure that eyelids are properly shut and place a clean wet cloth over the eyelids.

What precautions to be taken after death of a donor?

• Please do not put vermilon, abir and rice over eyes or face of the deceased.

• Inform the eye bank team as soon as possible.

• Keep a copy of death certificate (if possible).

After the removal of eyes would there be any disfigurement?

• Removing the eyes does not cause any disfigurement.

• Eye banks have trained personnel who carry out the procedure.

• Removal of transparent corneal tissues does not cause any disfigurement.
