EYFS – Mathematics – Number Comparing Sets of Objects Early Learning Goal: ELG 11: Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Development Matters Statements Links: (M-N8) Compares two groups of objects, saying when they have the same number. (M-N23) Uses the language of 'more' and 'fewer' to compare two sets of objects. Year 1 (1N4) Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least. Ideas to meet M-N8: Using this resource: Children to count how many objects there are in each set. Sets may be identified by colour, size or object. Children to identify when both sets have the same number of objects. Discuss what the ‘same’ means. In other areas of the classroom: Children to sort objects into sets and count how many there are in each set; match sets of objects to corresponding numerals; children to count how many children are in their group/set and identify the corresponding number. Ideas to meet M-N23: Using this resource: Children to count each set of objects and identify which set has ‘more’ or ‘fewer’. Children to write the numeral that identifies how many objects there are. In other areas of the classroom: Children to sort objects into set and compare using the language of ‘more’ and ‘fewer’; compare the number of boys and girls in the class/group; encourage making comparisons in the small world or role play areas. Comparing Sets of Objects

Early Learning Goal:

ELG 11: Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a

given number.

Development Matters Statements Links:

(M-N8) Compares two groups of objects, saying when they have the same number.

(M-N23) Uses the language of 'more' and 'fewer' to compare two sets of objects.

Year 1 (1N4) Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the

language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least.

Ideas to meet M-N8:Using this resource: Children to count how many objects there are in each set. Sets may be identified by colour, size or object.

Children to identify when both sets have the same number of objects. Discuss what the ‘same’ means.

In other areas of the classroom: Children to sort objects into sets and count how many there are in each set; match sets of objects

to corresponding numerals; children to count how many children are in their group/set and identify the corresponding number.

Ideas to meet M-N23:Using this resource: Children to count each set of objects and identify which set has ‘more’ or ‘fewer’. Children to write the numeral

that identifies how many objects there are.

In other areas of the classroom: Children to sort objects into set and compare using the language of ‘more’ and ‘fewer’; compare

the number of boys and girls in the class/group; encourage making comparisons in the small world or role play areas.

Suggested links:30-50 months(M-N4) Knows that numbers identify how many objects are in a set.(M-N6) Sometimes matches numeral and quantity correctly.(M-N7) Shows curiosity about numbers by offering comments or asking questions.(PSED-SC2) Welcomes and values praise for what they have done.(CL-LA5) Is able to follow directions (if not intently focused on own choice of activity).

40-60 months(M-N15) Recognises numerals 1 to 5.(M-N20) Selects the correct numeral to represent 1 to 5, then 1 to 10 objects.(CL-LA6) Maintains attention, concentrates and sits quietly during appropriate activity.(CL-LA7) Two-channelled attention, can listen and do for short span.(PD-MH19) Shows a preference for a dominant hand.
