Dear Friends:
We are in the midst of – brace yourselves – “Israel Apartheid Week,” a wrong-headed festival of hate and misinformation. This “week” actually takes places over the course of several weeks on college campuses in the United States, Britain, and throughout the world.
Israel Apartheid Week's main agenda is the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, or BDS, which seeks to isolate Israel economically, culturally, and in every other possible way. Some treatment for the most vigorous democracy in the Middle East!
BDS cynically and vainly attempts to model itself on other boycott movements, like the South African anti-apartheid movement and the civil rights bus boycott in America. Those movements were genuine battles against racism and colonialism, while BDS is a nothing less than diplomatic warfare against Jews and the Jewish state.
I do not suggest that Israel is flawless. What state is flawless? And I acknowledge that the current situation in Israel causes true hardship to Palestinian citizens, most of whom really do just want to live in peace.
But to excoriate Israel so relentlessly is wildly unjust. BDS supporters suffer from a self-imposed blindness to basic facts, including Israel’s long-standing willingness to negotiate a two-state solution (still supported by most Israelis), the Palestinians’ chronic rejections of such negotiations, the encouragement of anti-Semitism and terrorism within Palestinian society, Israel’s dedication to civil rights, democracy, and the rule of law, and the unusually high moral standards maintained by the Israel Defense Forces.
At the United Nations’ World Conference Against Racism (2001), I witnessed first-hand the depth of anti-Semitic anti-Israelism that pervades much of so-called “civil society.” The goal of many pro-Palestinian advocates at the WCAR was not merely the creation of a national home for Palestinians; it was also the demonization of the one tiny democracy in the Middle East. It seemed, in fact, that they were more interested in dismantling Israel than in building Palestine.
The BDS movement needs to be re-branded. Instead of calling it “Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions,” we should re-tag it “Bilk, Deceive, and Single-Out.” For the its real goal is to BILK Israel of its well-deserved economic successes, earned through hard work and innovation; to DECEIVE the world about Israel’s record concerning its military operations and its protection of human rights; and to SINGLE OUT Israel for international opprobrium while inveterate violators of human rights abusers receive scant attention at all.
The BDS movement is forceful. We can be just as forceful. Illinois has passed a strong anti-BDS law. Several other states are considering similar bills. You can help by expressing support for bipartisan federal legislation, introduced by, among others, Illinois’ Senator Mark Kirk and Representative Bob Dold. This bill, the Combating BDS Act of 2016 , authorizes state and local governments to take tangible action against entities seeking to economically damage Israel. See more at www.ajc.org. Your support will embolden those who already support the legislation and might encourage others to sign on.
