Although expectancies can be useful in interpreting certain stimuli, they can also lead people down the wrong path

What you see depends on what you expect

The way in which people interpret what they perceive can also influence their perception

Top-down processing The use of pre existing knowledge

to organize individual feature into a unified whole

Bottom-up processing The analysis of the smaller

features to build up to a complete perception
