FALL 2017 XLP Adult Classes

WHAT IS HULA MOVEMENT? ● It is communication through movement. ● It is movement in which both the technique and language of the song is

expressed through “aloha”. ● It is the language of expression using the body. ● It is a form of informal, structured movement that is a connection and not a

product.  WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HULA MOVEMENT?

● It simultaneously involves the inner being (spirit) and the physical body. ● It teaches body awareness and what it can do to express culture. ● It develops coordination and control of movement. ● It is a discipline for dealing with self-image, self-awareness, self-control and

connection with oneself and the Hawaiian culture. ● It fosters the expressive capacities and personal enrichment. ● It stimulates creative thinking.

Dates: 11/7; 11/14; 11/21; 11/28; 12/5; 12/12  Location: Hopwood Hall, Room H4

Objective: Iaorana! Students in this class will understand the importance of Tahitian dance, or “Ori Tahiti”. Ori Tahiti, which is the literal translation for “Tahitian dance”, is an original artistic expression and movement rooted in ancient traditions and a unique art form in Polynesia. In this class, students will be introduced to the ̒ ōteʻa (usually written as otea). The ̒ ōteʻa is a traditional dance from Tahiti characterized by a rapid hip-shaking motion to percussion accompaniment. Students will demonstrate the ability to learn the basic Tahitian movements of Tairi Tamau, Tairi Tama, Varu and Otamu, Ami and Fa’arapu. Tahitian movement and dance is a unique art form in Polynesia and similar to dancing hula, except, you’re moving your body in a very fast, rapid, but, graceful way. In Hawaiian hula, the hand expressions “tell the story”, but, in Tahitian dance, the “story” is in the hips.

Home Cooking with Flair Instructor

Leonora Ching, also known as “The Pickle Lady,” is the author of “The Pickle Lady’s Pickle Passion Cookbook,” which covers various dishes of fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood, eggs, and hot sauces. She has worked many years in sheltered workshops, mental health hospitals, and blind rehabilitation centers. Leonora has taught cooking to both adolescents and adults, as well as conducted cooking demonstrations and tastings at various public libraries, botanical parks, churches, schools, senior centers, recreational centers, YMCA, Blaisdell Center, book shops, and stores.    Growing up, Leonora took no interest in cooking. Her

interest sparked when she returned from school and began to watch and learn from her mom, who cooked all dishes from “scratch”. Leonora also learned from her aunts and anyone who was willing to teach. Many ideas for various food dishes derived from her travelling experiences and watching television food channels. “The Pickle Lady” has been featured in newspapers, magazines, and on television and radio spots. Leonora continues to teach classes and has received favorable comments.

Bollywood Dance instructor

Sumoha Jani Min started her training in various dance styles at a young age in Texas. She's trained in Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi, two popular Indian Classical dance styles, as well as cultural folks styles such as Garba, Raas and Bhangra. While attending New York University and designing her own major in South Asian Studies, Gender Studies and Performing Arts, Sumoha was the lead choreographer for a collegiate dance group, NYU Nasha, and a principal dancer in the PatelWorks Dance Theatre under the direction of Smruti Patel. Her love for Bollywood films developed at a young age to satisfy her desire to connect to her cultural roots. She has since embraced the storytelling tradition that exists at the

core of Indian dance traditions and the fun vibrant nature of Bollywood dance. She hopes to inspire participants to trust their bodies, play with expressions, and embrace the joy of dance that is ever present and available!
