Through the generosity of Marta Weeks, many other donors,

and the efforts of faculty, staff, students, and supporters, we

have achieved something special at the University of Utah.

This inviting and distinctive new building honors a remarkable

geologist, Frederick Albert Sutton, whose legacy will inspire

others to follow in his footsteps. Our building will have a lasting

impact on the campus as one of the first LEED-certified Earth

Science buildings in the United States.

This building is an investment for today’s students and tomorrow’s; it offers an

environment for learning about the natural world. It has been a privilege to be

involved in the programming and construction, and to direct the design of its displays.

It is the students’ ideals, and the courage to implement them, which have the potential

to change the world and make this a sustainable planet. There has never been a more

important time to understand Earth—our unique planet—in its delicate balance.

I am very pleased to welcome you to the opening of the Frederick Albert

Sutton Building that will house the Department of Geology & Geophysics,

the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, the Rio Tinto Earthquake

Information Center, and the College of Mines & Earth Sciences Dean’s

Office. This has been a long undertaking, with the first letter concerning a

replacement for the old Mines Building having been written in 1991. Five

years later, it was our good fortune to have been asked by our principal

donor, Rev. Marta S. Weeks, what our principal need was. Shortly thereafter the initial fund for this

building was established, at the time believing that state funding would be forthcoming for half

the cost. That was not to be, although the state of Utah did give authorization to proceed with

such a building with private funds—at that time the estimated cost of the building was around

$14 million.

Thanks to donations from many valued and loyal alumni and friends, in addition to further

support from Rev. Weeks, and growth on the funds given previously, by 2005, we believed that

we had sufficient funds to begin planning and design for the building, with over $17 million in

hand. With the general increase in construction costs, changes in initial design, and the decision

to make this a “green” LEED-certified building, the final cost approximates $27 million, and the

additional monies have accrued from continued investment and immense generosity on the part

of alumni and friends.

The result is before you, still a work in progress, and doubtless with many changes yet to come as

the occupants settle in and continue their important work of teaching and research. Differences

from our former space could hardly be greater—hallways with natural light; high ceilings that

provide for utilities and give one a feeling of space; clean, efficient laboratories and classrooms

for research and teaching; a series of dedicated rooms for rock and mineral preparation; and the

wonderful new entrance to the college in the Peter Stifel Confluence with its glass drum giving

magnificent views to visitors and occupants alike. Daily one notices a new demeanor amongst

the faculty, staff, and students, and almost daily someone drops in to say how delightful the new

space is. Please enjoy the short visit that some of you have planned, and by all means if you have

the inclination and the time, please return to visit us again.
