few years off from that role. I am grateful for
her service to the youth of our church and
community. She will conBnue to be a

“Flight To Egypt” Inspired by Matthew 2:13
Dedicated to the refugee in all of us
by Michael E. Thomas © 2019
“Get up and take the child to Egypt…”
The angels visited Mary and Joseph
Good news of a child born to them
Emmanuel will bring peace to people
In a violent Roman world
Foreigners followed a star to Jerusalem
Herod lied to them about helping
Wanting to kill the child who bears witness
Against him and his violent schemes
The Magi brought their gifts to Bethlehem
Warned in a dream to avoid Herod
They found a new route home
Avoiding the capital and Herod’s temper
The angels told Mary and Joseph to leave
Herod’s angry tweets were heard
They left Bethlehem before the slaughter
To Egypt they fled to a safer place
Children and parents are on the run
Burma, Central America, Syria and Africa
Running away from violence
Living as refugees in many new lands
Children longing for safety
Infants carried away by parents
Fleeing with hopes of survival
Longing to grow up
Like Moses and Tubman God did send
Waiting for Herod’s tirade to end
Joseph and Mary walking each mile
On the run to the Nile

PASTORAL INTERN
“Where Are All the Children?”
A few weeks ago, I walked over to Patriots to make a visit just to see what this
place was all about. I had been to the Patriots Banquet a few weeks prior and
one of the highlights of the evening for me was seeing the kids from Patriots get
up on stage and recite the Patriots Pledge followed by an “AMEN!” I had also
begun to know many of the kids from Patriots as so many join us at Zion for the
W.O.W. program.
I walked into the building and was immediately greeted by Janice Forrest, cradling a phone on her
ear and a child with a “tummy ache” on her lap, she warmly welcomed me, told me to make
myself at home and take a look around. As I walked down the hall, a liOle boy and girl at the end
of the hallway said “Hey, we know you! We know you from the church!”
And then this happened…..
I said “yes, how are you?!” And they said; “I am blessed!”
(What? Did they really just say that?)
It just so happened that the week prior at W.O.W., Pastor Mike had taught the kids that WE ARE
ALL BLESSED! When someone asks you how you are, you can say “fine” or “ok” or…. you can
respond by saying “I AM BLESSED!” And there it was, playing back to me like music to my ears,
something that stuck from W.O.W. the week before.
There is a part of us, those of us who are old enough to remember when the church sanctuary was
standing room only and our Sunday school classrooms were filled to the brim, that grieves for
those good old days. I hear the senBmental lament, “where are the children?” and I understand
it.
But maybe the Holy Spirit is up to something new at Zion. Maybe our ‘Sunday school’ of years
past is now – ‘Wednesday night School’…. or as we call it W.O.W – Worship On Wednesdays.
SomeBmes in order to be true to the call of the Spirit in ministry, we have to look past the
confines of our memory and be open to something that looks and feels a liOle different.
In the last month, Pastor Mike has trusted me with our ‘Wednesday night school’ WOW program
facilitaBon. What a joy! Our special dinner prayers that we sing, learning about Jesus’ love for us,
spinning around and dancing with the kids to worship music, and finally, creaBng our closing
prayer circle and opening the floor for one of our kids to pray, is extraordinary. Once again, the
Spirit is alive at Zion! Come join us and see what happens at ‘Wednesday night School’!
Peace, Pastoral Intern, Perrie Dralle

WOWWOWWOWWOW WOW, the holiday season is upon us and the children at WOW are
so excited knowing that the holiday season is here. They know that they
will have a good thanksgiving meal and they know that Santa is coming.
They know that I’m asking them what they are grateful for and if they
have been naughty or nice. It’s so nice to see the kids liOle eyes light up
when I ask them if they are naughty or nice. They put this big smile on
their face and say I’m nice.
We had a thanksgiving meal where Pastor Mike and Intern Perrie
blessed the food. There were so many families that came to eat with their
child/children. It’s nice to see family siVng together with other families and fellowshipping with
each other. The kids were amazing being the host and hostess for their family and friends at the
tables. Ron Simmons did an amazing job with the cornbread dressing, the menu was mashed po-
tatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, macaroni and cheese, dinner rolls,
cakes, pies, sweet potatoes, water, milk and coffee. The meal was outstanding. I want to thank
everyone who cooked and volunteered their Bme so the children at WOW could have an awe-
some thanksgiving meal from the WOW program. The volunteers did a great job with seVng
up the tables and cleaning the kitchen a@er dinner was done. A@er dinner the 4th-5th graders
did a puppet show. It was a hit! The families were so happy to see the kids doing something posi-
Bve and learning how to read the bible and to make a play from the Bible that will help them in
life. The skit was about the Ten Commandments. What a famous way to get the kids to read and
especially, reading the Bible and to have the children read in general. One Commandment really
stuck with the kids it was #5: Honor your mother and father. Hopefully we can have the WOW
puppet kids to rehearse for another play in February. TBD, I will keep everyone informed if the
WOW puppet kids are puVng on another skit.
WOW, Christmas party will be at Patriot’s Gateway Center December 18th
, 4-6pm, dinner
will start 4:15pm. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will come at 5:30pm. I am asking for gi@s. The WOW pro-
gram is in need of toys, socks, blankets, any other gi@s or donaBons for the kids at WOW will be
much appreciated. Please do not wrap any gi@s. To drop off the gi@s please put by the WOW
office door that is located by the nursery or you can bring to Patriot’s Gateway Center. Also I’m
asking for help with food dishes for the WOW Christmas dinner (any kind of pasta casseroles, any
kind of salads, dinner rolls, baked beans, green bean casseroles, sweet potatoes, potatoes sal-
ads, fruit salads, buOer, spoons, napkins, paper plates, cakes, pies and cookies). The dinner will
start at 4:15pm, but if you bring a dish can you please bring any food dishes at 3 pm please. That
is when we are seVng up the cafeteria for the meal. Please come help serve, meet and greet, set
-up and clean up. There is always a place where you can help out for the dinner. The WOW pro-
gram is blessed to have a congregaBon that supports the WOW program so that a child/children
can come to the house of the Lord to learn how to say “We are Blessed”, and to know that they
are a child of God.

ZZZZIONIONIONION LLLLITERACYITERACYITERACYITERACY Reading to Children at Christmas
In the dark days a@er Thanksgiving, before the holiday season is in full swing, Sally Kern drags out a
big box filled not with holiday decoraBons — those will come later — but with books.
Sally and Stephen Kern read to their kids preOy much every night, but the books in this box are
special, reserved for this Bme of year only. They are filled with stories, mostly about Christmas, but also
about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and the winter solsBce. "I think it's wonderful to have books as a centering
acBvity this Bme of year, because everything does get ratcheted up," says Sally Kern. "Even before
Thanksgiving, the Christmas pummel starts. And so this is something that is very grounding for them and
for us."
As a child, Sally Kern wanted to be an illustrator, and now she chooses her books with the eye of an
arBst. Intricate detailed pictures with an old-fashioned look appeal to her. As the family picks through
the pile, they look for their favorites, the ones they remember from last year. Sally Kern pulls her son
Larkin's favorite book from the pile and hands it to her husband. She may be the collector, but her
husband is the reader. He seOles onto the couch with 7-year-old Larkin to read Jan BreO's Who's That
Knocking on Christmas Eve?, which the family refers to as "the snausage book."
Garret, 10, listens by the fire. Though he can read many of these books himself (two of his favorites
are North Country Christmas and An Orange for Frankie), he sBll likes to be read to. "When I'm listening
to them, I get more out of it, because I listen to stuff that I don't noBce when I am just skimming
through the pages," he says. But some parents feel self-conscious when they read aloud, says Judy
Freeman, the author of a guide to read-aloud books called Books Kids Will Sit S8ll For. Freeman says
they should get over their inhibiBons.
"Your kids don't know the difference. They just want to be warm, and they want to hear your voice,
and they associate the words with you," she says. "It turns them into readers. If you want your kids to
read, you have to read to them." Reading aloud to kids is a good idea no maOer what Bme of year, says
Freeman, but the holidays can be an incenBve to get started. "When you start a family tradiBon by
reading the same books every year ... it's just fun. It's warm. It makes you say, 'Oh, it's that Bme of year
again, let's do this,' " Freeman says. As the years go by, the Kerns have discovered that the annual ritual
spawns their own stories, which are now becoming part of family legend. Last year, says Sally Kern,
Stephen teared up when he was reading Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl S. Buck. ("It's nice to
have Sally remind me of these things," he jokes.)
Stephen Kern seems almost surprised at how deeply this tradiBon has taken hold in his family. He
says they don't really think about it, it's just something they do — and the more the Kerns do it, the
more it becomes something they can't do without.
"I like it that we really don't bring these books out unBl a@er Thanksgiving, and they really do go away
again," he says. "And it's hard to put them away, because as you can see, we have a lot of them, and we
don't get through them all. But I think it sort of is part of the looking forward to taking them out again
and rediscovering them, and maybe adding a new one."
Sally Kern looks forward to the Bme when the kids will be old enough for bigger books, like A
Christmas Carol, which she remembers reading with her grandfather and her mother. And there is one
book the Kerns read every year without fail: "We read The Night Before Christmas, the night before
Christmas. And someBmes that's at home, and someBmes it's in a rusBc lodge in West Virginia, beside
the frozen river," she says. But this year, on this night, the Kerns get a sneak preview of the big event, as
Stephen Kern picks up the book his wife's parents gave her as a present many years ago and begins to
read:
"Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house ..."
