    President’s Message

In recent times, I have been asked often whether the government will take away the land on which our Club now sits, and end our lease prematurely. These questions reflect the unease among members following the return of the Jurong Country Club (JCC) land before the expiry of their lease. My answer is really quite simple and straightforward. We have a 30-year lease agreement that allows us to operate on the Kranji site until 2030. Unless there is a need for the government to re-designate its use (as was the case with JCC), we will remain at least until October 2030. And none of us are aware of any such plans.

Our planning for the use and operations of our facilities and infrastructure is premised on this fact. It is the reason behind our decision to spend $2 million to renovate the golf course, started seven months ago. When fully completed in May 2017, the course with good horticulture practice and care by both management and golfers, will be good for at least another 10 years. By then, we should have a better picture of what happens beyond 2030.

Our hope of course is that we can be granted a further extension of the lease, a privilege already extended to some other clubs. For that to happen, the government has announced that the utilisation of the golf course is an important consideration. Our golf course, as with most of the other clubs, are almost fully utilised on weekends. On weekdays, the course utilisation is only 57%. We need to increase this significantly. We do have schemes to do this in place, such as a discount for our social members, and promotional rates for guests. But this is still not sufficient and we need to do more. The Task Force that I announced in the last issue of Tidings has made some interesting recommendations, including a new category of weekday golf memberships. The Management Committee (MC) has approved this and it will be presented to members in the May 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM) for their consideration.

Of course, higher utilisation of our golf course and other facilities will mean an improved income stream for the Club. Without a doubt, the partial closure of the golf course since June 2016 has affected our finances significantly. Apart from the expenses incurred for the renovation work, income from golfing operations such as guests’ green fees, buggy fees and F&B spending by golfers has declined. In 2016, we will see a reduction in the Club’s net reserves by $2.8 million, and a further projected 2017 reduction of $2.9 million.

2017 will be a pivotal year for our Club. The MC has implemented a variety of projects and schemes to invigorate the Club. These include a renovated golf course now under way, bigger and better social and F&B facilities like the Water Hazard, our karaoke lounge and the new Tee Garden, for enhanced enjoyment and experience for members. Some schemes and enhancement will require members’ approval and these will be tabled at the AGM. I hope members will give the MC their full support.

I will conclude this message by reminding members that as a members’ club, we and we alone decide our own outcome and destiny. We receive no financial or any other support from either the government or charities. We need a group of volunteers with the right leadership skills and commitment, with support from the staff, to set the framework and direction for the Club. I believe we have that in the present MC and Sub-Committees, and the General Manager and his team. We also need unstinting and unselfish support from members, who understand the issues, prepared to offer their views and opinions no doubt, but ultimately moving in one direction with the leadership. I hope to see that in the May 2017 AGM, and make our efforts worthwhile.

I wish members, staff and other stake holders Gong Xi Fa Cai as we approach the Year of the Rooster.

    Kwek Chiow Yiap PatrickCaptain’s Message

    Oh Kian Beng

Happy 2017 to all our members!

Travelling back in time to October last year, we brought close to 40 golfers on a golfing trip to Chiangmai, Thailand. That was the second time we take our golfers to Chiangmai. The fact that we received great participation rate and that some of the golfers who joined in this trip were part of the first trip shows that our golfers really love Chiangmai! Participants were generous in sending in positive feedback about the trip and all its arrangements which has definitely egged us on to organise and bring our members on more trips. We hope to explore other places this year so, stay tuned.

We ended 2016 with the Christmas Mixed Texas Scramble Game on Saturday 17 December 2016 and everyone had a jolly good time in the game and the dinner at Water Hazard that followed. We collaborated with the Social team in this event for the first time and the chemistry was simply sizzling. Jointly, we raised more than $10,000 for the Boys’ Brigade, making Christmas especially meaningful for the Club last year. Everyone had a blast that day and I offer my sincere thanks to all who were part of this event.

Our newly renovated nine holes have been open for play on Monday 5 December 2016. I believe several golfers have played on the new nines and I hope you are enjoying the new golfing experience so far. Though I risk sounding like a broken record, I hope golfers will take good care and ownership of our golf course by always remembering to repair divots and ballmarks.

In view of the set-up of the newly renovated nine holes, there are some changes to golfing operations in relation to buggies’ traffic flow at the Buggy Bay, the Starter’s Hut and evening 9-hole golfers. The Starter’s Hut will be temporarily located at the rain shelter beside Hole 2 tee box (current Hole 8). This temporary Starter’s Hut and the buggy bay have

also been designated as control points. Please do bear with us if these changes may cause you inconvenience as they are only temporary.

We are now into Phase 2 of our golf course renovation which means we have already crossed the halfway mark. Let’s look forward to the completion of the whole renovation a few more months down the road.

In the meantime, there are still exciting events to look out for. One of them is our annual Fa Cai Cup which is slated to take place on

Saturday 4 February 2017. A lion dance performance will of course be one of the highlights of this event. There will be limited slots since we are operating nine holes. So call along your golfing kakis and quickly sign up for the game.

We will soon be welcoming the Year of the Fire Rooster. I hope you are all fired up for all things great and exciting coming your way.

I wish all our Chinese members Gong Xi Fa Cai and may you enjoy success in every aspect of your life in the Year of the Rooster.

  • A group of 36 Warren members and guests took a 5D4N golf trip to Chiangmai in October 2016.

Chiangmai, sometimes known as “the rose of the north”, is the second largest city in Thailand. It is a sprawling modern city, yet only has a population of 200,000 while still maintaining its easy provincial charm.

We played at the three top courses in Chiangmai, namely Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort, Summit Green Valley Chiangmai Country Club and Alpine Golf Resort Chiangmai. Each of these courses is unique in its layout design and challenged us individually with its natural terrain and memorable hazards. Here in the mountainous surroundings, everyone was able to enjoy golfing in the fresh country air and close to nature.

We continued the journey to visit Wat Rong Khun. This is also called the White Temple because of its iconic architecture with its stunning intricate white complex of buildings.

Visit to a local bee farm to taste different types of honey products.

At the Summit Green Valley Chiangmai Country Club.

At the Chiangmai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort.

At the Alpine Golf Resort Chiangmai.

This golf trip included a full day excursion to the famous Golden Triangle of Chiang Rai where we went sightseeing, as well as to learn more about the culture and customs of the Thai people.

The first stopover was the Maekhajan Hot Springs for coffee break. Visitors could also enjoy bathing their feet in the natural spa.

Stopover at the Maekhajan Hot Springs for coffee break and outdoor foot spa.

The next stop was the 5 Hill Tribes Villages where we hiked a short distance to visit the diverse local communities of the Akha, Meo, Lisu, Palong and Karen. Best recognised for their elongated necks, the Karen women still practise the tradition of wearing heavy brass rings around their necks.

Our final stop was the most northern point in Thailand called Mae Sai. Here is the Thailand-Myanmar border crossing that is also home to the bustling town and market filled with many local handicraft items, perfect for shopping and buying souvenirs by visitors from both countries and overseas.

On behalf of the group, I would like to thank Mr Jack Wong (Assistant Gof Manager) for organising this enjoyable and memorable trip. Many participants express their wish for the Club to organise more such overseas golf outings.

By noon, we arrived at the Golden Triangle of Chiang Rai for a sumptuous buffet lunch. Historically, this region of Thailand was once known for its infamous opium trade. Today, this place still thrives as a popular tourist attraction. The surroundings are hilly and lush where the mighty Mekong River meets Ruak River to form a natural boundary between three countries, namely Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.

  • Chinese New YearNew Year, or the ‘Spring Festival’ as it is known in China, is the longest and most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. This year, Chinese New Year begins on January 28. The Chinese New Year’s festivities end two weeks later on the 15th day of the first month on what is known as the Yuanxiao Festival (a kind of lantern festival not to be mistaken with the mid-autumn lantern festival).

During the Chinese New Year celebrations, there are many traditional activities, some local and others celebrated universally. The Chinese believe that as they enter a new year, they should start a new beginning. They clean their houses, pay off all of their debts, purchase new clothes, paint their doors, and even get new haircuts in order to have a fresh start for the new year.

Homes are decorated with special banners, many of which are red and gold; the traditional representations of happiness and prosperity.

One very fun tradition of the Chinese New Year is exchanging gifts. A traditional present that is given is small red envelopes filled with ‘lucky money’. These envelopes are given to children by their family and friends.

Usher in the Year of the Rooster with us at Warren!

    Sources & References:https://japanesemythology.wordpress.com/rooster-symbolism/http://astrologyclub.org/chinese-horoscope/2017-year-rooster/

Symbolism of the Rooster2017, the Year of the Rooster, will be a very significant year in many aspects of our social and professional life. There is no middle of the road when it comes to moving forward. Good impressions also count. Most want to look their best and be clear on their intentions concerning love, money and business. They want nothing less than practical and well-proven paths to ensure success, rather than risky ventures.

The Chinese ideogram for rooster is 雞/鷄, 鸡 ( qi/chi/kai), homophonous to the one meaning ‘favourable’ while the word for chicken crest is the same sound as that of an official (guān). Its appearance and behaviour symbolise the ‘five virtues’: civil virtues, because its comb makes it look like a mandarin and therefore suggests advancement and promotion; martial virtues, because of its spurs; virtues associated with courage because of its conduct in battle; virtues in association with kindness, because it protects its hens; virtues related to confidence because of the accuracy with which it heralds the dawn. It also speaks of reliability, epitome of fidelity and punctuality. In Chinese Taoist and fengshui beliefs, the red rooster on the walls of the house symbolises protection of the house from fire; the white rooster – protection from and chasing away demons. Five (roosters) - reminding parents to educate their sons (and hopefully daughters as well). Brilliant white in China is the colour of purity and is linked with the rooster.

Just so you know: In a Rooster Year, all of the other animals in the Chinese Zodiac, can reap great rewards by tapping into Rooster traits. Loyalty, commitment, hard work, family values, and top-notch appearances are just some of the characteristics that will be rewarded this year.

The rooster was a universal solar symbol across Eurasia, the Near and Middle East and Europe as a bird that heralded the dawn with its crowing and that would dispel evil spirits as the light of day dispelled darkness. Veneration of the rooster in East Asia was particularly widespread, but is best known today and associated with Japan and China where the rooster is entrenched as the tenth of the twelve animal symbols in the Chinese zodiac.

The event was well-attended by 194 kids and their parents. The VIPs of the day were none other than our Kids’ Club members who came for the event dressed in their favourite superhero costumes. They were given star treatment with a seating area specially reserved for them, with their names nicely placed on the tables and having food served to them by our service staff.

The little VIPs were also given an opportunity to try out and explore their interest in various sports such as golf, bowling, table-tennis and badminton that afternoon. On this note, we would like to thank the table-tennis and badminton coaches for conducting the trails for the kids.

    Annual Bowling Championship 20161 - 30 November 2016 (Finals: Saturday 10 December 2016)

The 2016 Annual Bowling Championship came to a close on Saturday 10 December 2016 and our 2 champions were born!

Men’s Champion Roger Teo (L) with Sports & Events Manager Ronald Teo. Ladies’ Champion Alicia Teo.

Our bowlers and their families at the 17th Milo International Junior All Stars Bowling Championship 2016 today.Mandy with Coach Sandra.

His Thoughts On Coaching The Young: I have sincere passion in motivating and inspiring the younger generation. Being a coach is a wonderful job! You are not just imparting bowling skills, but also invaluable life skills, character values and principles that will ultimately shape the person the student will grow up to become. It is a job I take with great care and responsibility. His Coaching Methods: Every student is unique. For me it is about getting to know each individual personally and understand their different learning styles. Some learn visually, others auditory and the rest will be those who learn through feel. Sometimes, what the kids need is someone to give them belief and confidence in themselves. I am a firm believer in staying positive and displaying fighting spirit. Whenever students start to doubt themselves and feel down, I share inspirational stories and experiences of how many world champions go through the same thing. I let them know that it is never about falling down. It’s about how many times you pick yourself up and keep fighting for your dream.

Our Youth Bowler Mandy Koh came in third in the “Girls 12 & Under” category of the 17th Milo International Junior All Stars Bowling Championship 2016! Well done, Mandy and thanks for making Warren proud!

His Thoughts On Our Warren Bowlers: Warren has a group of young bowlers with immense potential. They compete and have won medals locally and internationally and are on their way to becoming the best bowlers in Singapore. Many are in the Warren COE (Centre of Excellence) National Development Programme and they are on the pathway to becoming National Bowlers and representing Singapore in the near future. The Local Bowling Scene: It is a huge sport in Singapore! Bowling is one of Singapore’s most successful sports and brings in plenty of medals in the Sea Games, Asian games and in international competitions. Plans for The Next Generation of Singapore Bowlers:I hope to inspire and develop the next group of bowlers that will move on to do Singapore proud and fly our flag high in major events around the world. There is a good chance that bowling will be included in the future Olympics and who knows... the next Olympic gold medalist might be from Warren! That would be something, wouldn’t it?

“Bowling is all about science and mathematics! It is an extremely fun and engaging sport for all ages”, says Jerein matter-of-factly, about the sport many of us know and love.Jerein Sandra, a familiar face at Warren Bowl, has contributed a great deal to the grooming of our young Warren Bowlers as well as conducting schools’ trainings for many other youngsters. He has just recently been appointed coach of the Singapore Bowling Team. We spoke with Jerein and got a sneak peek at what he has in store for our sporting nation and the Singapore bowlers of the future.

  • Overweight does not necessarily equal unhealthy.

There are actually plenty of overweight people who are in excellent health.

Conversely, many normal weight people have the metabolic problems associated with obesity. That’s because the fat under the skin is actually not that big of a problem (at least not from a health standpoint, it’s more of a cosmetic problem).

It’s the fat in the abdominal cavity, the belly fat, that causes the biggest issues.

If you have a lot of excess fat around your waistline, even if you’re not very heavy, then you should take some steps to get rid of it.

Belly fat is usually estimated by measuring the circumference around your waist. This can easily be done at home with a simple tape measure.

Anything above 40 inches (102 cm) in men and 35 inches (88 cm) in women, is known as abdominal obesity.

There are actually a few proven strategies that have been shown to target the fat in the belly area more than other areas of the body.

Tennis Elbow“Tennis elbow” is a common term for a condition caused by overuse of arm, forearm, and hand muscles that results in elbow pain. You don’t have to play tennis to get this, but the term came into use because it can be a significant problem for some tennis players.

Tennis elbow is caused by either abrupt or subtle injury of the muscle and tendon area around the outside of the elbow. Tennis elbow specifically involves the area where the muscles and tendons of the forearm attached to the outside bony area (called the lateral epicondyle) of the elbow. Your doctor may call this condition “lateral epicondylitis”. Another common term, “golfer’s elbow,” refers to the same process occurring on the inside of the elbow - what your doctor may call “medial epicondylitis”. Overuse injury can also affect the back or posterior part of the elbow as well.

Tennis elbow most commonly affects people in their dominant arm (that is, a right-handed person would experience pain in the right arm), but it can also occur in the non-dominant arm or both arms.
