SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time; Priesthood Sunday Monday: Halloween Tuesday: All Saints Wednesday: The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day) Thursday: St. Martin de Porres Friday: St. Charles Borromeo; First Friday Saturday: First Saturday; Blessed Virgin Mary

How do we manage to know God is present even in the most unlikely of places, even in the situations and people we would least expect? Well, today’s Gospel passage might shed some light on the matter.

That is the story of Zacchaeus in today’s gospel. Zac-chaeus, a rich tax collector climbs a sycamore tree to get a look at Jesus as he passes by. Jesus notices Zacchaeus, and (boldly) invites himself to the man’s house (to the dismay and disapproval of some of the people). Zacchaeus is deeply moved by the whole experience and pledges to make amends for any wrong he has done. In a very real sense, Zacchaeus has become a new man.

As you well know, the fact that Zacchaeus was a tax collector would have rankled more than a few of the Jewish peo-ple. These were the guys who were “in cahoots” with the Ro-man occupiers. These were the guys who often defrauded the people. These were the guys who got rich off the sweat of the working class. And when people looked at a man such as Zacchaeus, they saw a bad guy.

But Jesus saw something else entirely. Jesus saw a possibility. Jesus saw a divine spark within Zacchaeus, the living God within him. And that meant that Zacchaeus’ story was not over. Whoever or whatever he was today was not who he had to be tomorrow. He could be more. And Jesus would not give-in to public sentiment, would not get on-board with the prejudice and anger and resentment that was in the hearts of many. They saw a bad guy and Jesus saw a child of God.

And that’s the key. If we want to experience God each and every day, each and every moment, we need to start look-ing at the world and others with the eyes of Jesus. We need an entirely new lens, a new prescription that allows us to not simply see the failings and faults and shortcomings of others, but see the possibility for real change and real hope and real transformation. And when we have the right way of seeing, when we look at the world through the lens of the person of Je-sus and his saving acts, even the sorrows and disappointments will not have the last word. Rather, each heartache will be an opportunity for something else to grow in place of the empti-ness, an opportunity for a small seed of God’s love and good-ness and grace to grow blossom into something beautiful, something meaningful, something life-giving. Can we see as Jesus sees? Can we find God and goodness and possibility and hope in each person? In each situation? In ourselves? And maybe most importantly, do we want to?

“God creates out of nothing. . but he does what is still more wonderful: He makes saints out of sinners” (Soren Kierkegaard)
