How to explore the internet, balance your time and stay energized. Take your art from the studio to dis-play in an online gallery. Learn how to jump into online marketing with tips and techniques to build your confidence. Plein air painting is used as an example but the techniques can be applied to any process used to create your artwork. Introduction to facebook, twitter, blogging and building a website to promote your art. Discover why you create art-work and how to create your brand. Begin to build a plan to achieve your goals.

Jan Stitt is a p a i n t e r and cre-ative di-rector at the UAF

Marketing and Communications office. She signs her paintings Raven. She lives in Fairbanks when she isn’t painting landscapes en plein air (`in the open air’) somewhere in Alaska. She has been ex-ploring the world of the internet and will share what she has learned and encourage others to explore op-tions and find their niche.

Short Moviemaking 101 Alaskan short movie activist Bob Curtis-Johnson, founder of the moviemaking challenge “Bob’sShorts” (www.bobsshorts.org), returns to Fairbanks during Art EXPO to lead a workshop on the structure, themes and production techniques specific to the short movie format, presented by Fairbanks Arts Association. Partici-pants will view and dis-cuss short and super-short films, block and light scenes, discuss computer editing technology, and learn how to get the most from small budgets, all in a relaxed, creative and encouraging atmosphere. Enthusiasm is all that’s required. Since the explosion of YouTube and other hosting sites, the entire world is making short movies- and many are by first-time Directors. Now it’s your turn! Bob has 30 years’ award-winning professional media production experience both in Alaska and beyond, creating for the likes of National Geographic Explorer, PBS, Black Entertainment Tele-vision and The Discovery Channel. In addition, he is a special-ist in media preservation issues and consults on collection man-agement, theater installations and video editing environments.

Winter carnival Parka Parade

Every culture has a story of its history: Colorful tales of arctic life woven into the fabric of the much-anticipated Parka Parade are no exception. Traditional Alaskan parkas have served as beautiful examples of a rich and colorful history. Every bead, stitch, pelt, button, tassel and embellishment represents a piece of story-telling history. This popular winter carnival “fashion show” beginning over 60 years ago is slated for Sunday, March 21 at 1:45pm on 2nd Avenue. This day of events will also show-case The Open North American, a 30-mile dog race, and a Fur Auction held in the parking lot, next to Big Ray’s, between 2nd & 3rd streets, downtown. Judging for the Parka Parade will be held in the Ice Museum when entrants will model both summer and winter parkas before a panel of judges. Winners will then display their fashions on the street and compete for the People’s Choice Award.

Registration will begin at 1pm on March 21st in the Ice Museum and is free and open to the public.

Perseverance Theatre’s (PT) mission is to create an Alaskan Theatre of Place that embodies the core values of community, excellence and discovery.

The Theatre was founded in 1979 by Molly Smith as a theatre by, for and about Alaskans and today is led by Artistic Director Art Rotch and Managing Director Jeffrey Rogers. PT was born in Juneau—the state’s capital and a community of 30,000 that is only accessible by plane or boat. Thirty years later, we’ve grown into the state’s flagship professional theatre, serving nearly 16,000 artists and audiences annually with classical, contemporary, and world premiere productions on our Main and Second stages; education and training programs for youth and adults; statewide and national tours; the Beyond Heritage Native Festival; and outreach collaborations with statewide artistic and social service groups, ranging from Ilisagvik College in Barrow to Juneau’s Native and Filipino Communities. PT is the resident theatre at the University of Alaska Southeast.

E. cOLLEEN hIcKMaN I have been an artist since I was old enough to hold a pencil or, more likely, a crayon. At age 47 I went back to college and found myself in a place that allowed me to become a trained artist. I have always been so infatuated with all aspects of art that I want to try it all. I do, however, use watercolor as my main medium especially with portrature and still life. I have shown my work in several states and have been accepted in four judged art shows: two in Alaska and two in other states.

Although I am anything but young, I work at my paintings with as much energy as I have available and I draw something each day for practice. Thank you for your interest in my work.

MaTT MOBErLY I began painting in watercolor in late 2005. After a year of “self-teaching”, I met Tom Nixon and began taking lessons from him. I’ve also attended workshops by nationally known artists.

Watercolor is a fantastic medium if you are willing to let the paint do it’s thing. It’s really something to watch a wet wash flow around a stark white sheet of paper, with colors mixing themselves and turning into a wonderfully abstract background. Or the final stages, the last few brushstrokes on a painting, and it all comes together….sometimes….not always. I currently enjoy painting in an intuitive style, and have been told my work has an “eastern” or “zen” feeling to it.

I’ve met some great people upon joining the Fairbanks Watercolor Society, and many have turned into true friends. I thank YOU for enjoying my art…. Matt Moberly

“It appears that even though Hurricane Cindy was the most violent hurricane we have experienced in the last 200 years she didn’t last as long as expected and so the damage wasn’t as wide spread as it could have been. “ “ Still, the damage she did do was devastating in many places….” The being that had arrived on the storm winds of Hurricane Cindy had been walking for only a few minutes

when he could feel the change in the storm that raged all around. He lifted his head and seemed to be sniffing the air. A smile appeared on his face which made him look quite human. He paused momentarily to adjust his haversack and then continued on scattering the fine dust-like particles into the wind that was still quite strong. His progress was slow in many places as the massive destruction

of the hurricane faded much more quickly than was natural for it. The rain would continue for some time, and the traveler from a distant place was soon soaked through except for his haversack which appeared to be made of a fabric that repelled water. He shook the water from his hair and belatedly pulled out a hat that had been rolled up in his pocket. Shaking it out, he put it on his head….

By Cheryl Joens • Episode 3

I became a volunteer for Fairbanks Arts Association last September, shortly after arriving from the far away shores of England to experience life in Alaska.

From the start I was made to feel welcome by the friendly FAA team. I was encouraged to get involved in many of the wonderful activities that they organize throughout the year in support of the arts and artists.

My experience as a volunteer has given me the opportunity to learn about the vibrant arts community in and around Fairbanks. I’ve also enjoyed meeting some of the many talented artists who display their work in FAA art shows.

By volunteering for FAA I feel I’ve already made a contribution to and become an active member of my new community. I’ve found some wonderful new friends along the way too!
