Transcript

Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

Eternal Turkey, the land bridge joining Europe and Asia, has been home to countless empires. Here Agamemnon fought Hector, Antony met Cleopatra, Süleyman the Magnificent broke with tradition to marry a Christian slave, and Paul the Apostle was born. Explore Turkey’s evocative past on a privileged journey from mysterious Cappadocia to imperial Istanbul.

Deniz Beyazit, Assistant Curator in the Department of Islamic Art, looks forward to leading this fascinating program to her native land. Her expertise in Medieval Islamic and Ottoman art will enhance our appreciation of the many masterpieces we will encounter.

From Istanbul, at the entrance to the Sea of Marmara, fly inland to Cappadocia. Discover the Zelve Valley, honeycombed with underground churches, and marvel at the Byzantine frescoes and troglodyte villages of Göreme. Witness whirling dervishes and view Cappadocia’s extraordinary landscapes from a hot-air balloon. In sophisticated Ankara, explore ten millennia of history at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, then continue to Bursa, first capital of the Ottoman Empire, to admire the Green Mosque and Complex.

In Istanbul, capital of three empires, spend three nights at the recently renovated Pera Palace Hotel, whose past guests include Alfred Hitchcock and Ernest Hemingway. Visit the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia—built a thousand years before St. Peter’s in Rome—and other sights. Enjoy a cruise along the Bosphorus and browse the Grand Bazaar, a bustling market founded over 500 years ago. An exclusive dinner at an Ottoman waterfront mansion is an added highlight.

We hope you will join us on this discovery of Turkey’s myriad delights. Sincerely,

Emily K. Rafferty President

AAA, the Met, and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error, or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay, or irregularity which may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus, or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of The Program. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the participant and the carrier. Nor will AAA or the Met and/or their agents be responsible for loss, injury, damages, or expenses to persons or property, due to illness, weather, strikes, local laws, hostili-ties, wars, terrorist acts, acts of nature, or other such causes in connection with The Program or anything beyond their reasonable control.
