Important Policy Change on Negative Lunch Balances:
Parents receive a “Low Balance Notice” when their child’s account drops below $10 with
a request to replenish the account.
A new procedure by District #304 will proceed if a child’s lunch balance drops into the negative. If a
child has a negative balance, he/she will not be able to purchase a meal. Instead, he/she will be given a
reduced price, state balanced meal which includes a cheese sandwich, fruit, and white milk. If this were
to occur, a reminder note will be sent home indicating that a cheese sandwich meal was supplied and
the account will be charged at a later time when there is a positive balance.
Any questions or concerns about this new procedure including financial and affordability concerns can
be directed to the Business Service Office at 630-463-3030.

This month our school will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book
club called One School, One Book™. Every family will receive a copy of the
same book – Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM. – and will be asked to read it
together at home over the next few weeks. I am personally asking you to make the
time so that your family can participate in this special activity.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun,
worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book™ program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at
our school. Everyone – students, parents, and all faculty members will all be following along together.
A copy of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM will go home family plan via backpack on Wednesday, October 21.st A
kick-off book reading in the cafeteria by Mrs. Thompson will occur Wednesday evening (6:15 pm) at the book fair.
Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Generally, you will be asked
to read about 15 minutes each night.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You
will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In class, students may
explore the book through activities and discussion. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child
can be included. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM!
One School, One Book™ is a novel program in that children of all grade levels will all be listening to their parents,
family members, and friends read the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound education-
al sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child's own reading level. We also
believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read
by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still
captivate and stimulate older children.
I know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your child(ren) and I look forward to talking to you and your
child(ren) about Mrs. Frisby. When a whole school reads a book, there's a lot to talk about. With your help, we can build
a Community of Readers at Fabyan Elementary.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Darcy Thompson

Fabyan’s Halloween Celebration
Fabyan Halloween classroom parade and parties for Kindergarten
through 5th grades will be held on Friday, OCTOBER 30th.
Please note the schedule below:
Kindergarten through 5th grade Parade 1:00 pm Promptly
Room Parties 1:15 pm
Weather permitting, the parade will be held outdoors on the school
grounds. Parents, grandparents and other family members are invited
to the Halloween Parade, and to enjoy the “photo opportunity” as the
classes parade around the exterior of the school building. The parade
route will begin with the students exiting out the playground/music
doors and parading around the playground surface area starting by the
basketball courts and proceeding to the front of the building to re-enter
through the main entrance doorway.
In case of inclement weather, the parade will be held in the Fabyan gym. If the parade is held in the gym, visitors to the parade will be able to enter the building through the main entrance door-way and proceed immediately into the Gym for their “photo-opportunity.” Due to this being a school function, pictures and video taken during this event may not be posted to social media.
Room parties will be held following the Parade. We ask all parents and visitors to remember that only designated Room Parents who are helping with the parties may go to the classrooms. Room Parents will check in at the office. Pre-printed name tags for all designated
room parents will be given out upon check-in. We are hosting food free parties. With this in mind,
no food will be used during the parties.
Kindergarten through 5th grade students may wear basic costume elements to school. They may
add elements to their costume prior to the parade. Masks may be worn for the parade, as long as
they do not obstruct the child’s vision; however, face make-up is not allowed. Parents are asked
to approve the costumes for appropriateness in a school setting, (i.e. no weapons or gang dis-
plays, or any costumes or masks that would upset a younger child).
If you have specific questions, please contact the front office. –Thank you

The Our Sister School Committee is so excited to be working closely with
E.M. Rollins Elementary again!
For those new to the school or unfamiliar with what this is, 2 years ago, Fabyan
began the program called Our Sister School.
The idea behind the program, is that Fabyan students are so blessed and have so many opportunities afforded to them,
and we wanted our students to realize that there is need nearby and that not all students have the opportunities and the
educational tools that help them to become successful students. An application to be considered for "Our Sister School"
was presented to approximately 20 schools that demonstrated both financial need and were located within a 20 mile radi-
us of Fabyan. Roughly 1/2 of these schools returned the completed applications. Following school site visits, the PTO
Executive Board at that time voted and unanimously voted for E.M. Rollins in Aurora to be Our Sister School indefinite-
ly. We could not be more confident of the decision we made. Since the program was rolled out, Fabyan families have
donated books, used school supplies, new school supplies, $1,200 in U.S. Games P.E. certificates that the school used to
purchase soccer nets, learning centers, and so much more. But the need is still there. 83% of the students from E. M.
Rollins are considered low-income and only 29% of the students are meeting or exceeding the state standards on the
ISAT's. There is so much need there, but when you walk through the front doors of the school, it's like you're walking
through the front doors of Fabyan. The noises are the same, the students laughter is the same. They may not have the
shining computers, or extensive art equipment or the bright full library, but just like Fabyan students, they have the de-
sire to learn. We want to help promote that through this committee and to help give them the tools to foster that love of
learning. We hope you will support this committee and in turn support our Sister School for many years to come!
Currently, our 4th and 5th grade students have been matched up with buddies from E. M. Rollins and are writing letters
to introduce themselves. Several committee members were able to visit the school last month and personally see what
the school's current needs are and to see what Fabyan has been able to do for them thus far. Our school supply drive was
a success and we were able to deliver a trunk full of supplies that students will be able to use throughout the year. Thank
you to all families for their generous donations! Next on the Committee's agenda is a book collection. One of Rollins
classes is in need of copies of the book Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. At next week’s Fabyan Book Fair,
we will have a table set-up where families that wish to purchase a copy of this book to donate to the school will be able
to. In addition to this book, any families that choose to do so may purchase a book of their choice to donate to Rollins to
help build and add to their classroom libraries. Please note that this is not in any way mandatory, it is just an opportunity
for our Fabyan families to support our Sister School through the gift of a book. Many other opportunities to support Our
Sister School will be happening in the coming months. Be on the lookout for a cold weather clothing drive, used book
drive and more. Again, please feel free to support this program and committee in any way that you and your children
choose to. Anything that you can do is so appreciated by the students and faculty of E.M. Rollins Elementary!
Any questions, please contact Melissa Hostasa at [email protected].
