Safety First!

Why? Because it’s safe, non-toxic and it complies with the standards

and regulations of the agency.

Please keep in mind that “Non-Toxic” doesn’t mean “safe for skin.”

That being said; never use paints that are not intended to be applied on

the skin, such as acrylic paints, watercolor markers or pencils.

You may require to use paint thinner or acetone to remove them from

the skin, which can be harmful.

Do not paint anyone who has a contagious illness, or who has open

sores or wounds, or even acne.

If you work with kids, make sure to get their parents’ consent on

whatever activities you do with them, and never leave them alone.

And, finally if you paint faces for a profit, for your peace of mind (and

your client’s), I’d be very smart to consider purchasing face-painting

insurance.

What Do You Need To

Get Started?

The good news is that you won’t need to buy extensive or expensive

equipment, so let’s take a look at the essential supplies you’ll needed

for face Painting.

Water-Based Face PaintThe first and most obvious required material is water-based

face paint. You can either get a professional face paint kit or

just a regular one

The main difference is the variety of colors included, but professional

face paint kit could be very expensive, anywhere from $40 up to $200.

On the other hand, a regular face paint kit could the most convenient

option if you’re getting started or you just need it for an up and coming

party.

You also can buy pots of paint that come with more paint (as much as

twice the amount of paint than palettes) but, factoring in that you have

to buy each color separately, it makes them more expensive than

palettes.

We mentioned water-based paints above as the preferred choice for

the simple fact that they are always considered non-toxic (less prone

to cause allergies or bad reactions) and because, being water-based,

they are much easier to wash off.

Another advantage of water-based paints is that they can readily

blended, so you can mix 2 or more colors to create new ones.

Also, since water is the vehicle in which the paints are dissolved, they

dry very quickly, just taking as long as the water in the paint itself

evaporates.

GlitterExcellent for adding that extra touch of sparkle to your face art.

Glitter is one of the most important ingredients for a successful face

painting and it is used essentially in any design.

You can use it over almost any design and “upgrade” a run-of-the-mill

design to an awesome design.

BrushesBrushes are to face painting as a scalpel to a surgeon.

Keep in mind that natural brushes (the ones made of natural bristle) are

not very suitable for face painting, given how soft the bristles are, so

synthetic brushes are the best option.

You also will not have to spend a lot in brushes because there is no

need to buy top-notch, high-quality brushes for this activity.

Some face paint kits come with very useful and versatile brushes,

nevertheless, it won’t hurt getting a couple more of a higher quality.

Brushes+

Take a look at the following table, which contains a short description of

all the sizes of brushes and their main purposes.

Tissues or Sponges?Besides water-based face paint and brushes, you have to

stock up on wipes, rolls of paper, paper towels and such.

Sponges, rags or other cloths are a better option than tissue and wipes

because you can reuse them. However, you will need different

sponges for every different color.

Something else that will also be necessary is water, so you should

keep at least two trays with water:

- One will remain relatively clean, and will be used for dipping

the sponge, towels or whatever, for a first time;

- And the other tray to dip them afterwards (the second bucket

will usually get and remain dirty much quicker).

This way, you can use the water from the second tray to remove most

of the paint first and then keep the first bucket with clearer water and

use it to finish cleaning the area.

SpongesSponges are used to complement brushes and applicators for

giving finishing touches to face paint, glitter, etc.

Painting over someone’s face or hand means you usually won’t have

to paint large areas, but sometimes you will, and that’s what sponges

are used for.

Sponges are used to paint large areas with a single color, like when

you have an outline and you just need to fill it.

The most effective sponges for face-painting are the ones used for

makeup that come in a triangular shape, but a round-shaped ones will

work wonders too.

So, summarizing a little, this is a list of all the essential things you will

need to have ready before starting in addition to the supplies mentioned

above (brushes, paint, etc.):

Water-Based Face Paint

Sponges

Hair clips.

At least two trays filled with water

Paper tissue, towels and/or wipes

Nice little things to have:

A mirror to show progress and final design

Hair clips

A mirror for the subject to see the results and progress.

A digital camera or cellphone (so you can take pictures of the final result and publish it online or show it to clients)

A large towel to put over the shoulders and around the neck of your subject (to protect them from stains from drops of paint).

Your Workspace

First off, it is cleaner and you make less of a mess. For example, you

can use a table and cover it with a plastic or newspapers or whatever

and at the end you will just to just.

Second is that it looks more professional, which is important if you are

doing face painting as a business.

And third, you will work faster and be more comfortable, and so will

your “client”.

Having a proper workspace can be very important and

even indispensable for this activity and there are several

reasons for that.

Let’s Do It!The fun part begins…

Now it is time to actually paint something, assuming you have read all

the previous instructions and followed my instructions to set up your

workplace, get your brushes and the face paint you will use.

TechniquePainting faces is easier said than done, but with the proper instructions

it’s very straightforward.

So, I have compiled the following list of tips I have found useful when

painting faces:

Before you add actually the paint to the brush, you should dip it

quickly in water and then use it to daub the paint with water until

the paint dissolves enough to acquire the consistency you want,

repeating if necessary.

Regarding the paint consistency, remember that the paint should

not be so thin that it runs when you lay it over the skin of your

subject, but it should not be so thick it becomes gloppy either.

Also remember to paint light colors first and darker ones at the

end, keeping this practice as much as possible.

Wait a few seconds between each layer you paint to let them dry.

As mentioned above, it is preferable to apply an order or sequence

to paint different colors, but if you need to paint two colors together

that are very different you can add a thin line between them using

a neutral color such as white or silver.

Do not use red paint around the eyes.

Have hair clips or garters at hand for when you paint the face of

someone with long hair, so you can clip the hair away if necessary.

If you and your “client” are unsure about allergies or skin issues he

may have, you test first by applying a small amount of paint in a

distant area of the “client’s” skin such as the back of his hand or

his neck; and waiting 10 minutes to see if any adverse or

undesirable reactions occur. If they do, wash the skin with lots

of water and soap and seek medical attention if the reactions

become severe or if they do not decrease; remember to have

a list of the ingredients of the paint at hand to show it to the

doctor.

Working with Children

Little kids are and probably going to be your main “clients”, so the first

thing to do when working with children, is informing their parents and

making sure they give you their consent.

Make sure to ask about allergies the kid may have and about skin or

health problems he may have that you need to watch out for.

Also, make sure you use water-based paints and that you keep them at

hand in case any unwanted adverse reaction happens and need the list

of ingredients.

The most important requirement for successful face painting is that your

“client” remain completely still (as much as possible at least.)

To help you and make it easier for them to remain still try telling them a

story, you can take a classic story such as the one of Goldilocks and the

Three Bears, but changing several elements.

You can, for instance, change the ending and have it end some other way

that pleases the child.

You can also play a game with the kid, such as telling them riddles, or

telling them a story but just a fraction and asking them to fulfill the rest,

anything you can think of to keep them interested and, most importantly,

still.

It also is very important to have a comfortable seat for your “client”, no

matter if they are kids or adults.

Finally, regardless of the techniques or positions you use, I have found

that the best way to improve the way you paint is with practice, so be

patient and prepare to practice painting any design or new idea you can

think off!

+ Remember never to paint over cuts, abrasions,

rashes, tender skin, crusts or any other type of skin

wounds.

Fix and Prevent Errors

We have added the most important and basic next; try to always keep

them in mind as much as you can whenever you are face painting:

Before you start you may want to first make an outline in black

using a super thin brush.

When painting someone’s face, you should start by using lighter

colors and leaving the darker ones for last; and you should

always keep this order, which means that when you paint you

will need to consider and carefully choose the next color you will

use.

It is advisable to apply the painting in layers (at least whenever

it is possible): just apply all the parts of the painting that are of a

same color, that constitutes a whole layer and you will have to

let it dry before moving on with the next. Again, layers

composed of darker colors go last.

Allow a few seconds to pass between each layer of paint you

apply, the more time you allow to pass, the better. This will

allow each paint layer to dry, potentially preventing colors from

mixing.

While a few minor mistakes are always permissible, there

are some simple rules you can always follow to prevent or

to minimize the occurrence of accidents and mistakes.

In case you make any mistake just use a wet paper towel or

baby wipe to erase as little as possible, to be able to reuse as

much as you can of what you have already painted. Remember

the towel or tissue you use to erase should be just a little wet

and you should not leave the area you erase wet.

Be extra careful when painting around or near the eyes: if you

need to paint just below the eye then have the subject look up;

on the other hand, if you need to paint above the eye or over

the eyelid, then have the subject look down.

Remember you should never paint over rashes, abrasions,

open cuts or tender skin; if someone wants you to paint over an

area in which he has a cut or other wound then offer him to

paint some other part of their body such as their arms or hands.

+ When painting lighter colors first and darker colors last, but are unsure about

which color to pick next, you can use the following mnemonic technique: just

remember the ‘rainbow order’ of colors; it is very simple, you just have to

memorize the order of the colors in the rainbow:

Suggested DesignsHere are a few designs along detailed steps with

pictures showing you how to make each one.

Take a close look at all the suggested designs; be creative and think of

your own designs for the next time.

Or you can use the stencils that usually come with your face paint kit.

Step 1.

Start with the red outline, make sure it is thick but it does not have to be consistent (with the exact same thickness everywhere).

Step 2.

Paint the inside of the heart with pink.

Step 3.

After it is dry cover the pink area with white lines.

Step 4.

Finally add dots all over the thick red outline.

Step 1.

Start with the white outline, drawing a rectangle. On the inside left top corner draw a square.

Step 2.

Paint 5 white lines inside the rectangle, making sure not to paint the square. These will be the white stripes of the flag.

Step 3.

Fill the spaces between the white stripes with red paint, completing the red stripes.

Step 5.

Finally add white dots over the blue stars box.

Step 4.

Now paint the square with blue. This will be the stars box.

Step 1.

You will need to start by painting the sea: use some light blue to create a chunk of the sea with waves at the top; you can also add some strokes of darker blue.

Step 2.

Use a lighter green to create some blades of seaweed, paint green stripes with strokes of yellow above it.

Step 3.

Now it is time to paint the fishes, for them you will need to mostly use orange, drawing some slightly oval-shaped figures.

Step 5.

In the fronts of the fishes use a darker tone of orange, maybe even red, to add some V-shaped figures as the mouths.

Step 4.

Add the tails to each of the fishes.

Step 6.

Finally, put a small white circle and an even smaller black circle inside it for the eyes.

Step 1.

Start with the body of the plane in a single color. This time I chose green.

Step 2.

Draw the wings using a different color than the one you used for the body of the plane, blue is the one I chose.

Step 3.

Using a different color, add a stripe to the body of the plane lengthwise.

Step 5.

Finally, you can add a stripe to the wing of the plane, but this is optional.

Step 4.

For the windows, put dots above the stripe; preferably using white.

Step 1.

The most popular kites are the ones that come divided in 4 areas. No matter which colors you pick for each area, decide it beforehand. It is also advisable that you start with one of the inferior quadrants.

Step 2.

I have found it is easier to start from below and move up, counterclockwise; this way it is easier to ensure all the quadrants end up being more or less the same size.

Step 3.

Keep moving counterclockwise.

Step 5.

After adding all the quadrants of the kite you only have to draw the tail and the outline of the kite.

Step 4.

Simply continue painting until you complete the entire body of the kite.

Step 6.

Finally, as an additional step you can add some ribbons to its tail.

Step 1.

First, with the color of your preference start drawing an outline, setting the shape of the rose the way you want it.

Step 2.

Fill the outline with the same color you used to draw the outline.

Step 3.

To create the effect of petals in your rose you will need to choose a second color, this must be a lighter tone than the one you used at the beginning.

Step 5.

Finally, use the color black to draw a partial outline for the leaves and some of the inside petals of the rose. This will add the final master touch.

Step 4.

Paint a couple leaves on the sides of the rose, you can even add up to three or more if you want.

Step 1.

First, let’s start with the pistils of the flowers. Draw as many as you want simply by painting some yellow dots.

Step 2.

Pick different colors for each of the flowers. Paint as many petals around the pistils as you want, one petal at a time.

Step 3.

Finally, you will just need to use green paint to add the stems and maybe some grass below too, if you want.

Step 1.

First, you will start with the body of the cactus, so paint a thick strong vertical green line.

Step 2.

Draw the arms of the cactus: two or three will be enough. You can draw a brown line below the cactus as the soil (this is optional).

Step 3.

You can add flowers to the main body of the cactus and on top of all of the arms and your cactus will be ready.

Step 1.

First, you have to draw the body of the rocket; a rectangle will do just fine.

Step 2.

With a different color (a darker one) add a few stripes over the rectangle and a triangle on top of the rocket. I decided to make both the stripes and the top of the same color.

Step 3.

Pick a different color and add a few squares in the body as windows.

Step 5.

This is optional, but you can paint the sky or outer space as the background; you will just need to use a sponge to paint everything blue or black around the rocket.

Step 4.

Use a combination of orange with a bit of yellow on the edges to create the flames of the rocket: you will just need to paint yellow stripes and add strokes of orange above them).

Step 6.

If you decided to paint it black as if the rocket was on outer space, then you just need to add a few white and yellow dots for the stars.

If you decided to paint the sky, then you will just need to use white to paint some clouds.

Step 1.

Let’s start with the cone. With the brown paint, make a inverted triangle.

Step 2.

The ice cream itself comes next. I added two scoops of ice cream, but you can obviously add just one or more. That depends on how much area you have available.

Step 3.

Finally, if you want, you can top your ice cream with some whipped cream (using white), a cherry (red circle) or making it drip a little.

Step 1.

Start with the orange outline of the pumpkin. Remember it kind of has to have the shape of a fat peanut.

Step 2.

Fill the inside of the pumpkin. Make sure to use the same tone you used for the outline.

Step 3.

Draw 3 black inverted triangles inside; these represent the eyes and nose.

Step 5.

Finally, just use the green color to add some leaves at the top.

Jack O’Lantern

Step 4.

Add the mouth; it has to look like a letter “D” looking down with an indentation as a tooth; filling the mouth black is optional.

Step 1.

This is a pretty basic figure, simple and extremely easy to do; you will just need 2 colors, black and white, and maybe some glitter. To start, draw the outline of a ghost.

Step 2.

Then, just add a couple of black dots for the eyes and draw a mouth. Finally, if you want, sprinkle some glitter over the figure.

Step 1.

First, make a yellow circle that will represent the sun. The cat will be painted over the circle to make it stand out.

Step 2.

Add an orange ring around the sun to complete this figure.

Step 3.

Paint the broom over the sun in black.

Step 5.

To finish it, add the tail and ears with a thinner brush.

Step 4.

Next, paint the body of a cat over the broomstick.

Step 1.

Start by painting a brown circle but remember to leave a small blank space in the middle, with the shape of a keyhole.

Step 2.

Use yellow paint to fill the keyhole and to paint three small feathers above the body. Leave enough space between them so you can paint more feathers with a different color.

Step 3.

With a different color (orange in this example), draw more feathers in the space you just left between the orange ones.

Step 5.

Add a small curved red line in the middle of the yellow keyhole part.

Step 4.

Add one green feather on each end.

Step 6.

To finish the turkey, just add two black dots for the eyes.

Step 1.

Start by drawing the spiky outline of two or three holy leaves with green color and fill it too.

Step 2.

Add two or three red berries opposite to the leaves; if you want, you can also add a small red ribbon on top of the leaves where the stem would be, above the berries or instead of them.

Step 1.

First create the brim of the hat and the beard using white.

Step 2.

Add a red inverted cone to complete the hat.

Step 3.

Add a white puff at the top of the hat; then use red to add a circle in the middle of the face for the nose; finally, add two black dots for the eyes.

Step 4.

To finish, use white to add the eyebrows and a mustache, then use red and a thin brush to paint the mouth which will simply consist of a thin red line.

Santa Claus+

Step 1.

To make a snowman start by painting a couple of white circles, one on top of the other, with the one on the top being slightly smaller than the one below.

Step 2.

Use black and a thinner brush to draw the outline of a hat.

Step 3.

Fill it with black but in the lower part of it; leave a space to add a stripe later. Using the brush you drew the hat outline with, add four dots for the mouth.

Step 5.

Finally, use orange and a thin brush to add the carrot for the nose and three buttons in the snowman’s belly and your painting will be ready.

Step 4.

Pick either blue or red and use it to fill the stripe in the hat and to paint the scarf between the two white circles and the eyes too (I used blue in this example but most people seem to prefer red).

Step 1.

First, using the color (brown), make a pear shape. The lower half must be thicker and the upper half must be thinner. It is advisable that you start by drawing the outline and filling it after with the same color.

Step 2.

Add a couple of eyebrows as shown in the picture and also add, if you like, a few dashes as eyelashes. Draw a couple lines on the top as the antlers.

Step 3.

Below the eyebrows on the center of the face add a heart-shaped nose using bright red paint.

Step 5.

You can optionally add a couple of white teeth.

Step 4.

Now use a thin brush and black paint to do the mouth.

Step 6.

Finally, add some holly and berries above the head. You can also paint a ribbon.

Face Painting For a

Profit

While it might not sound like something you can do full-time, face painting

on some occasions such as holidays can be a great idea for earning a little

extra money doing some part-time easy work; other good occasions, by

the way, are local events (especially sport matches), school functions and

festivals and parties.

At first you might want to do some painting for free, volunteering in order to

get known around your neighborhood and town.

The second thing you will need to have ready beforehand is a catalog with

several designs which also should preferably have pictures of them.

While some people that will come to you might ask for a specific design

they already have in mind, many will not know exactly what they want and

showing them a catalog with several ideas would be the obvious

alternative in these situations, plus when people see the finished designs

they will almost certainly make up their minds and ask for one for them too.

As for requirements in other aspects, specifically legal ones, you will not

need to consult an attorney or do anything special unless you plan to do

this full-time and invest your whole time on this in which case you will need

to set up a formal business. However, the best idea would be to make this

a part-time venture before you decide to do face painting for a profit.
