FACILITIES ADMINISTRATION SPOTLIGHT

CAMPUS PROJECTS, EMPLOYEES AND EVENTSLOGISTICS AND RECYCLING DEPARTMENT Jeff Fields, Superintendent Willie Earl McKinnie, Foreman Facilities transfer and logistics is one of our busiest departments on a daily basis moving materials, supplies, equipment and furniture . They recently had the difficult job of moving Dr . Randal K . Buddington’s lab from the University of Memphis to the campus . Dr . Buddington was so impressed with the movers, he commended Willie Earl and his team of movers for doing a great job! In his words, “It was obvious they knew what to do and they did it very well . When a lab is moved, having it done efficiently lessens the disruption . I was impressed with their care and professional attitude!” The team prides themselves on excellent customer service and satisfaction, as well as job efficiency with each and every customer move . Job well done to the entire team: Felix Johnson, Clarence Knox, Darius Madison, Quincy Houston, Jaqueze Roberson, Curtis Green, Terence Gray, Eric Young and Jean Claude Fokeu and Willie Earl McKinnie .

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Custodial Department Custodial employees, Giovanna Reed (assistant foreman) and Curtis Peterson (senior custodian) were recognized via email for always doing a great job . “I wanted to compliment your staff in the Van Vleet Building . Being in space Planning, I’ve been in most of the buildings on campus . I have to tell you that, in my opinion, Van Vleet has the cleanest restrooms, is the best smelling, has the cleanest carpet and shiniest floors!! It is a pleasure to come to work in the mornings to a clean environment!” Rosalie Nelson, Sr. Computer Aided Drafts/Design Operator

ARCHIBUS END USER TRAINING Lacy Scott, IT Administrator Archibus End User training classes are held on the first Tuesday and last Thursday of each month in the facilities physical plant, room 239 . This class is required for access to enter online work requests for facilities services . This class allows the end-user to review the procedures for entering work order/maintenance service requests . Visit the HR training portal to sign up for class and receive 1 .5 hours of training credit . For more information, please visit the Archibus training section (https://www .uthsc .edu/facilities/archibus-training .php ) on the website or contact Lacy Scott, lacescot@uthsc .edu . or 901-448-2223 .

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Plumbing Department

Anthony Williams, facilities plumber, was recognized via email sent to management commending his outstanding work efforts . “The OT Program recently had a crisis due to a plumbing issue on the 6th floor of the 920 building that was leaking down into the offices on the 5th floor . We were initially told that all of the water to our classroom and lab space would have to be cut off immediately and remain so until the repair was complete . I explained to Mr . Williams that we had splinting fabrication labs scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday of that particular week and that it would be almost impossible to reschedule the labs, especially because a local clinical practitioner teaches them and we schedule the labs 6 to 8 months ahead of time to get on her calendar . I don’t know how he did it, but Mr . Williams worked his magic and made sure that the pipes were repaired in between the lab sessions . From what I understand, it was a fairly big job . We greatly appreciate his efforts to make sure that our students’ schedule was not disrupted and we thank him for a job well done!” Anne Zachry, PhD, OTR/L, Dept. of Occupational Therapy

CAMPUS SAFETY NEWS - SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS Scott Campbell, Campus Safety Officer From Jan 2018 through March 2018, Slips Trips and Falls (STF) have been the most common cause of UTHSC reported injuries . Of the 15 incidents, 8 (or 54%) were caused by STF in various circumstances that included ice, water, housekeeping items and stairs . A slip, trip or fall at work can lead to injuries – and even death . Not to mention loss of work, and cost to the worker and University . Slips occur when there isn’t enough friction or traction between a person’s footwear and the walking surface . Common causes of slips include wet or oily floors, spills, loose or unanchored mats, weather hazards, etc . Trips happen when a foot strikes an object, causing a person to lose his or her balance . Workers trip for a variety of reasons, including clutter in walkways, poor lighting, uncovered cables, drawers being left open, and wrinkled carpeting or rugs . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that falls can happen in all occupational settings, and “circumstances associated with fall incidents in the work environment frequently involve slippery, cluttered or unstable walking/working surfaces; unprotected edges; floor holes and wall openings; unsafely positioned ladders; and misused fall protection .”

To prevent slips and trips, clean up spills, keep walkways and hallways free of obstacles and clutter, and keep cabinet drawers closed when not in use . To reduce the risk of falls, UTHSC encourages workers to pay attention to their surrounding, take your time and walk at a pace that matches the work performed, and suitable for the surface being walked on . If you have any questions or concerns, please call Campus Safety, Scott Campbell at 901-448-1334 .
