History Of East Carolina University

Chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly onMarch 8, 1907, the institution has moved in a rapid andorderly transition from a two-year normal school to afour-year college to a major comprehensive universitywhose outreach now transcends its regional origins.

On October 5, 1909, East Carolina Teachers TrainingSchool began its first regular session; during that year174 men and women students were enrolled. The firstclass to graduate from the two-year normal curriculumreceived its diplomas on June 6, 1911.

The institution was authorized by the General Assemblyin 1920 to institute a four-year teacher education cur-riculum and to confer the baccalaureate degree upon itsgraduates. The Board of Trustees proposed in 1921that the name be changed.

East Carolina Teachers College was authorized in 1929to initiate graduate programs, and it conferred the firstMaster of Arts degree in 1933. The college was chargedin 1941 to plan for a liberal arts program.

To reflect the institution's expanding academic commit-ments, in 1951 the name was changed to East CarolinaCollege. As the fastest growing educational institution

in North Carolina, by 1960 it had become the state's thirdlargest institution of higher learning.

During the expansion of the sixties East Carolina wasreorganized to reflect the structure of a comprehensiveuniversity. In addition to the College of Arts and Sci-ences, the Graduate School, and the General College, seven professional schools were established. In 1967the General Assembly authorized university status.Thereafter East Carolina University continued its aca-demic advancement and extended its services to ad-dress regional and national challenges.

In 1971 the General Assembly restructured publichigher education in North Carolina, making the Univer-sity a constituent member of the University of NorthCarolina. The charter class of the four-year medicalschool enrolled in 1977. In 1979 the University wasauthorized to develop five Ph.D. programs in sciencesbasic to medicine. East Carolina University awarded itsfirst Ph.D. degree in 1983.

The University presently consists of seventeen depart-ments within the College of Arts and Sciences, elevenprofessional schools, the General College, the Gradu-ate School, and the Division of Continuing Education.
