Volvo V60 Plug-in hybrid

Technology:The hybrid system on the V60 is centred on a 400v 11.2kWh Lithium-ion battery pack (comprising of 200 individual cells) that weighs 150kg; the whole vehicle is 300kg heavier than a conventional V60. The battery pack is located under the boot floor. The front wheels are driven by the Volvo D6 2.4 litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces 215bhp and maximum torque of 440Nm.

The rear axle has an integrated AC synchronous electric motor generating 50Kw (70bhp) and 200Nm.

The drive modes are selected by the driver: Pure, Hybrid, or Power:

Hybrid mode is the default drive mode, and the vehicle will revert to this each time the ignition is restarted. The diesel engine and electric motor work together for efficiency and low emissions. The instrument display is changed to show the most effective driving range; and potentially 155mpg.

In Pure mode the vehicle is powered solely by the battery and electric motor driving the rear wheels. The range varies according to terrain and driving style but is typically 32 miles.

In Power mode the engine and electric motor combine their power output for peak performance for acceleration. In this mode obviously all four wheels are driven; the front wheels mechanically, the rear wheels electrically.

The driver can also select a Save mode (switch by the AC button) which will save sufficient electrical energy for the car to drive in fully electric Pure mode for 12 miles if required later. This mode is intended for if the driver needs to drive through a city centre “emission free” zone as part of the journey.

The All-Wheel Drive can be selected at any time the driver requires it, with the central ECU applying electric motor torque to the rear wheels up to 75mph.

Volvo V60 Plug-in hybrid

The V60 hybrid uses two-stage regenerative braking. When the brake pedal is applied initial braking is through the rear axle motor as a generator to recharge the lithium-ion battery. The mechanical brakes are only activated for more urgent braking than the rear axle motor/generator can manage.

The plug-in charge point is located on the LH front wing.

Smartphone app: The V60 hybrid can give the driver access to some functions via a smartphone app, allowing control of the air conditioning to pre-warm or cool the car whilst it is plugged-in on charge. This can then save energy for actually driving the car.The system also supports pre-cooling of the lithium-ion battery pack which helps maintain optimum charging and range.

City Safety AEB :This system is standard on the V60 hybrid as it is on all other current Volvos. A LIDAR sensor in the top of the windscreen scans the road ahead and if it detects a collision risk will pre-pressure the braking system to assist the driver. If the driver fails to take action the system will autonomously fully apply the brakes. The system operates up to 30kmh and will default to the “on” state each time the vehicle is started.

Options:Driver Support Pack includes Pedestrian Detection which as the name implies adds this important added function to the AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking system, responding to pedestrian obstacles as well as vehicles.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Driver Alert Control (DAC), are included in but also available separately from the Driver Support Pack; using the camera for the AEB the LDW will alert the driver if the car wanders out of lane across a road marking without the indicators being used. The DAC is related but detects certain conditions in the cars movement and progress that may indicate that the driver is fatigued and at risk of losing control. The system provides a visual and audible alert to the driver to take a break.

Fully laminated and water repellent windows are available as an option, and together with PCC keyless system, as part of the Security Pack.

Volvo V60 Plug-in hybrid

ACTIONS... Thatcham are considering a research project on this vehicle very soon.

Trim levels:Pure Ltd is the only trim level: equivalent to the SE Lux trim level on a conventional V60 estate. The hybrid features a small chrome “Plug-in hybrid” emblem on the tailgate and on the front wings. 17” aero allow wheels are standard.

The standard interior is black leather with grey wood inlays, and front and rear parking sensors are standard on the hybrid.

Paint colours:At launch the V60 hybrid is only available in Electric Silver, but other colours are likely to follow.

Engine line up:D6 2.4 litre 5-cylinder turbo-diesel 9with hybrid rear axle) and 6-speed automatic transmission is the only option.
