1.1.Understanding Internship:

As a business graduate after finishing all the courses we are bound to go for an internship

program about 12 weeks. For internship we are suppose to select any business organization

where we can implement our own learning from the curriculum and enhance our ab ility to

work in the real world. Internship is a mandatory course which carries 4 credits and without

which our graduation is not complete. Internship helps a business student to understand the

real world where regularly business take place and it also helps to relate the theories we have

studied in the book with the real business arena. Corporate or business world is far different

than the academic world and it posses lots of hard work, complex environment and different

policies. To understand all these things of real corporate or business world internship is really

important for a business graduate. It helps to groom and upgrade own self in terms of

motivation, self- confidence, morality or ethics etc. One may know the suitable working

environment for own self by working as an intern in an organization.

I was enough lucky to work with Channel i as an intern and I got to know about the success

stories of failure stories of different programs. I learnt how a program can be successful

without less promotion. In my whole internship program Mr. Iftekhar Munim, Senior

Program Producer, Program Department, was my on- site supervisor. With him in the work

place I get to learn a lot about the program direction, to deal with production and to

understand the type of sponsorship for Channel i programs. My academic supervisor was Mr.

Shwakat Kamal, Assistant Professor, who always helped me to provide proper guidelines

about my topic and how to make a better report.

1.2.Background of the Report:

Channel i has different types of program in different times of the day. Some of the programs

are really popular and some of them are not so popular. In this report my topic was “Factors

of Success Behind Channel i Programs . How a program is actually successful in terms of

profit, audience acceptance; I have tried to find it out. I have also tried to find out the reasons

of failure of programs in terms of profit or public acceptance. In this report I have analyzed 4

different types of programs of Channel i. among them I have chosen popular, moderate,

developing type of programs.

Whole of the report I have tried to mention different aspects of a program whether it is

successful or not much successful.

Page 12: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

1.3.Objective:

Objective of the report is separated into two parts. They are described below-

1.3.1. Primary Objective: The primary objective of this report is to get to know the reasons

behind a successful program of Channel i or how to make a television program

successful.

1.3.2. Secondary Objective: Secondary objectives of this report are given below-

To know how a program operates in the panel

How the management deals with the sponsors

How a better direction can make a program successful

How to deal with the whole production, artist as a d irector

How the channel is making money from the program

How a program is getting public support

What can be a better structure to make a program successful

How the budget is allocated for a program

What steps are needed to run a program successfully

1.4.Methodology:

Methodology defines the way of collecting information from different sources for the report.

In this report I have collected information in two ways. They are- Primary Source and

Secondary Source. They are described below-

1.4.1. Primary Source: I took the help of primary sources to collect information. Like- I

took interviews, I talked to my supervisor about program structure and other stuffs, I

collected raw documents from research people.

1.4.2. Secondary Source: As secondary data I have collected a yearly book written on

Channel i‟s history, television queue, a law book written of laws and regulations on

media, some printed documents on different programs, Bengali to English dictionary.

Page 13: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 13

1.5.Scope:

In this report I had the scope to learn a lot. Channel i is one of the largest media house in

our country. It deals with different sectors of media. Like- news, drama. Movie, talk

show, journalism etc. are being practiced highly in this organization. Getting the chance

to work with the program department was an extraordinary opportunity for me. I got the

scope to talk to anyone from whom I thought I can learn something. Everyone was really

co operative to assist me to write a better report. I think this type of report will also help

the people working in the media; to get a glimpse about the television program strategy.

1.6.Limitation:

During this report I also faced very small limitation. I could not write about the exact

amount of sponsorship of any program, as they are strictly confidential. I could not collect

some information about the details of sponsors as the higher management strictly preserve

this and as an intern I am not allowed to know each and everything about the policies of

program department. Other than that I was able to collect information as per my need.

Bangladeshi Mass Media Industry

2.1.Mass Media Industry of Bangladesh:

Mass Media has become a very vital fundamental for our regular day to day life. Everyday it

is fulfilling our desire of solid and thoughtful news about parliament, citizen‟s constitutional

right, sports, news, entertainment, agriculture, industrial laws and regulat ions, lifestyle etc.

Today we cannot think of living a life without the connection of mass media. If we are aware

of our constitutional rights in present situation; we must give most of the credits to the mass

media.

Most possibly the concept of mass media1 has come in 1920 when radio was established as

the media of news and communication. In a free country the shape of the mass media is

established on the structure of economics, politics and culture. Recently Bangladeshi mass

media has speeded like a revolution and in last two decade our democracy has formed into a

better shape. Our country has gone so far in case of industrialization; urbanization, average

income, literacy rate etc. and we are able to know the exact amount with the help of mass

media. We must sat mass media is helping a lot in development of business and commerce.

On 1995 a research has revealed that the listener percentage of radio was only 36% and

recently the number has increased because of FM Radio. In our country the number of daily

newspaper is about 445 and 24% people all over country are newspaper reader and 3% reads

other published journals. I must mention that for some last decade‟s people are depending a

lot on the electronic media and a research says that 45% people in our country has television

in their home, which is 6 times more than before. In the urban area 88% families have

television in their home.

The culture of internet started in our country in the 90‟s. Information Services Center ( ISC)

provided the internet service for the very first time. On 1996 the government gave permission

for using the internet service to the governmental and non- governmental offices. Today we

have almost 110 million internet users and 61% of our population uses cellular phone.

Our mass media has the full freedom to work on the truth and justified issues of the country

and off the country. According to Press Freedom Index on 2002 out of 139 countries the

position of Bangladesh is 118. Later on 2004 the position was quite behind and among 167

countries Bangladesh was 151. According to Press Freedom Index on 2010 Bangladesh was

positioned 126 out of 178 countries. From when Her Excellency Shaykh Hasina has

announced for Digital Bangladesh, the base for information technology was established and

the mass media has got a great opportunity to establish the stronger field to spread o ut their

boundaries to the common people. We do have 24 Bangladeshi channel and almost everyone

is broadcasting full length news every day. Our mass media has invented bunches of honest,

efficient journalists who are dedicated on their profession and always running after in search

of factual news.

When I am talking about mass media I must mention the brief history of our journalism2. The

modern era of journalism was established on 1700. On 1780 “ Hiki‟s Bengal Gadget” was

published from Calcutta and that was the starting point of our new era of journalism. That

gadget was published by Augustus Hiki and was promoted spreading that; the journal was

completely out of anyone‟s or anything‟s personal impact. The Bengali journalism was

started on 1818 and on that following year Bengal Gadget (Calcutta), Deek Darshan

(Calcutta), Samachar Darpar (Sri Rampur) etc. started publishing. From our present

Bangladeshi territory the first journal was “Rampur Bertaboho (1947)”, which was published

from present Rangpur district. From the than Dacca the weekly “ Dacca News (1956)” was

published and later on “ Dacca Prokash ( 1961)” and “ Dacca Darpan (1963)” was published

from the present Dhaka.

The path of journalism took a different way on 1900 when the world saw two devastated

World War and the, freedom of India on 1947 etc. and the reader of newspaper was rising in

a good point. In the pat the journalists merely had any professional or institutional training

and knowledge. But now almost every university have the subject that teaches media and

journalism. So we are having some good, professional and prominent journalists for our

country.

We have a strong base in case of our mass media laws and regulations. This legal constraint

may sometimes sabotage the work of mass media but protects it from doing exploitation of

2 http://www.banglapedia.org/HTB/105247.htm

Page 17: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 17

any issues related to the country. Our present mass media laws and regulations 3 has given

different dimension to the journalists to work.

The basic rights of the citizens are accepted by the government of Bangladesh. In that case

the freedom of the mass media is also one of the basic rights of a citizen. The 26 th paragraph

of our constitution announces all the laws that contradict with the basic rights to be

unaccomplished. The basic rights that are granted through the constitution, how they can be

achieved are written down in paragraph number 102 in our constitution. Among the

paragraphs which are written on newspaper 39 number is the most important one.

The paragraph 39 says that Bangladesh‟s freedom of thinking and speak is limitless but still

it constraints some of the rights to control the media. It is clear that in where a journalist has

freedom of speech, a common citizen has the constitutional right of take care of his personal

and household staffs secured and to communicate through any media like mail or others.

Analyzing Factors of Success

Behind

Channel i Programs

Page 31: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 31

3.1. Success Factors of Channel i:

When we are talking about the rationales or reasons behind a television program, we are

actually talking about the public acceptance and profitability of a program. There are some

reasons that is behind the success of a television program. They are-

Extensive support from the sponsor and good relationship with them

Public acceptance and loyal audience

Good structure of a program

Good direction and a stable production panel

Eligible man power who are working behind the camera or post production

Goodwill and market leadership

In this report I have taken 4 different type programs of Channel i to analyze their success

factor, failure factor or the best part that is applauded by the audience. How the program can

be successful or the reasons behind being successful is analyzed here. The 4 different

program that I have analyzed here are-

Hridoye Mati o Manush (Soil and Men in Heart)

3.2 Hridoye Mati o Manush (Soil and Men in Heart)

21st February of 2004 a holy concept took the shape of agricultural documentary. It was

initiated by the son of soil “Mr. Shykh Seraj” and named “Hridoye Mati o Manush”. At

the very beginning Hridoye Mati o Manush used to work on small segments. We always tried

to work with policy levels of Bangladesh government. We have tried to raised the voice of

the farmers. Sir is working on television over 30 years. His program on BTV was “ Amar

Desh”; which was later on converted into “Hridoye Mati o Manush”. He did “Amar Desh”

from 1982 to 1992. Before that he did “ Shilponnoyone Bangladesh (1978)” and before that

he used to work as a free lance producer at BTV from 1975. A broader aspect of “Amar

Desh” was “Mati o Manush” on BTV (Bangladesh Television) which was on air till 1996.

Then he along with others formed “ Impress Telefilm” which was the biggest production

house of Bangladesh. On 1999 the birth of Channel i happened which was an enormous

initiative of the “ Impress Telefilm”.

To get to know more deeply about this great agricultural documentary show of our country I

talked to some of the team members who are very imperative part of this show. Most of them

are working behind the camera to make the show more enrich day by day. I have talked to

Mr. Taufique Ahmed ( Research Analyst) to get a deeper idea about the scratch level of this

program. The conversation with him has been written down shortly for the report.

International Mother Language day was preferred as the blessed day to broadcast “Hridoye

Mati o Manush”. Initially the program used to on air sequentially. That means it used to

break one single episode in small segments. Initially it was motivational for the farmers. For

example: The program tried to motivate the farmers not to keep their pond empty; rather try

to form a fish farm. If a housewife has a small piece of land she should try to make her own

garden where she can cultivate different vegetables or fruits.

In present time the program is doing more out of its boundary. It is now trying to working

with policy levels of the government and helping the government to create agricultural

policies on behalf of the farmers. Mainly now the program is always after raising the voice of

the farmers.

On December 09, 2004 “Hridoye Mati o Manush” took another initiative called “Hridoye

Mati o Manusher Daak” (an interactive studio based dialogue session between a farmer

and the policy maker); where the farmers are getting the opportunity of meeting with the

Page 33: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 33

policy maker from the government and face up to their desire or demands. Then the

management thought as they are trying to make the people aware of the policies of

government, they should try to spread the message in a broader aspect.

By thinking the point of spreading message in a broader aspect, on 2005 “Hridoye Mati o

Manush” took another initiative named “ Krishi Budget Krishoker Budget (Farmer‟s

Voice in Budget)”. Here in this program the entire team visit the remote areas of our country

where people do agricultural activities and get themselves free at evening. The area can be

specialized on fishing, poultry farming, dairy farming etc. and the management of the

program tried to drag out any concerned issue about that area. At the evening time a huge

amount of people are seated in the open place like- yard or playground and confront their

demand in front of the media. Here the best part is that, the mass can talk directly with the

minister of the government regarding their demand. The management of the program has

taken the minister to get to know about the problems of the farmers directly. From the

suggestions given by the people from different specialized areas the management of the

program has given recommendations to the government before the recent budget. This time

they have provided 55 recommendations to the Honorable Finance Minister of People‟s

Republic of Bangladesh, Mr. Abul Maal Abdul Muhit. In the budget program District

Commissioner , Superintend of Police, power supply authority etc are presented to come up

with different issues of the farmers regarding their needs and demands. Through the help of

this program the entire team got to know about the loan for the farmers who cultivate honey(

EES Fund).

13th August, 2007 was another year to conceive another initiative of “Hridoye Mati o

Manush”, which is known as “Krishi Dibanishi (Agriculture Round the Clock)”,

broadcast on Monday 8:40 pm on BTV. This program is also working on the farmers just like

“Hridoye Mati o Manush”.

“Hridoye Mati o Manush” has taken another project of printed magazine, titled “Mati o

Manusher Krishi” which had its first publication on August 2008 and issues for every

Sunday. Till now the numeral figure of printed copies are 214.

“Krishoker Eid Anondo ( Farmers Eid Delight)”, is another initiative of “Hridoye Mati o

Manush”, which a mainly a game show and is broadcasted during Eid Occasion. It has

started from 2007 and till now doing so well and is really vary famous among the farmers and

also mass. Farmers take part to this delightful program and share their joy and cheerfulness

Page 34: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 34

during Eid time. In this initiative “Pani Khela” is such a game which helps to make the

farmers understand how they can win a battle with so much hurdles.

“Krishoker Shasthya Sheba ( Farmer‟s Health Service)”, is going on air from 2008 to

provide the health rights and facilities to the farmers.

“Fire Chol Matir Tane ( Returning to Roots)” are one of the renowned initiatives of

“Hridoye Mati o Manush”, which started to go on air from 2011. In this program basically

people who from non- agricultural background take part to role play as a farmer. The

intention of this initiative is not to make the people farmers but to make them understand the

grief, pain and hard work of the farmers.

On the festive Birthday occassion of channel i “Farmers file” is broadcasted based on one

individual farmer or any special issues. “Earth file” has taken the responsibility to explain

the viewers some projection on climate change and global warming. On 2005 “Hridoye

Mati o Manush” started honoring special farmers by “Krishi Podok” award and till 2010, 4

out of the ordinary farmers got the recognition with respect and dignity. “Hridoye Mati o

Manush” also organized essay competition based on 2 agricultural topic, where top ten got

chosen to publish a book. In this competition best 3 got the most appreciation and the

publication was named “Jono Bhasso”. Currently this initiative is no longer existing as a

wing of “Hridoye Mati o Manush”, but very soon the entire team is expecting to have a

fresh start. The program has become one of the major advocacy channel for the government.

The program is also helping the government to create any documentation regarding

agricultural sector of Bangladesh. This is a big reason for what they are known as the

“Advocacy Television Channel”.

“Green Bridge” an agricultural co- operative association of “Hridoye Mati o Manush” at

Ishwardi, Pabna was formed on 16th august, 2009. From this co- operative association

farmers can sell their products to Agora ( Super Chain Shop). This wise initiative was taken

to save the farmers from the of middlemen. This has become a great initiative to protect the

rights of the farmers.

The main target of “Hridoye Mati o Manush” is now becoming to empower the farmers

through sharing information regarding different farmer‟s loan, power supply facilities etc.

union info service centre. Loan form or any info like that. When the entire team is visiting

village to village for budget program , tons of information and problem about the farmers life

Page 35: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 35

come alive in front of the media. This is actually helping the government to understand the

mind of the farmers and also their hard working life.

In recent times a die heart fan of this documentary has chosen his subject of PhD on

“Hridoye Mati o Manush”. In his report he will mainly focus on the impact of “Hridoye

Mati o Manush”, on the entire nation and also among the farmers. At Shombhugonj we will

find a road which is named after Mr. Shykh Seraj and the local people call is“ Shykh Seraj

Shorok”. All these outstanding evidences indicate the sky high popularity of this agricultural

documentary show among the entire nation.

3.2.1. Summary of the Interview of Mr. Shykh Seraj: When I am writing about “ Hridoye

Mati o Manush” its an obvious that I engrave some fruitful and interesting information about

the Son of Soil “ Mr. Shykh Seraj”. On 2011 I got a good luck to talk with this great

personality during his free time. That conversation was later on published as an interview in

the Business Magazine ( Vision- Volume 3) of BRACU Business Club ( BIZBEE). I together

with Mr. Mir Mudassir Ahmed was the fortunate people in this earth to write on the

biography of this noble personality. The summary of the interview has been given below

and the whole interview is attached in appendix 3.

Mr. Shykh Seraj was born in a joint family and he saw the life struggle of the farmers. He

studied in Dhaka University and he has always taken televis ion media as a media of

education rather than entertainment. He started his career with Bangladesh Television and

thought to work for the farmers. He always has his family beside him as the main support.

Poor farmers of our country are not getting the deserved value of their produced crops and

they are also taking loans at high interest from money- lenders which are making them poorer

because they cannot pay them back as they don‟t get the right amount for their produced

crops. This type social and ethical issues has always inspired him to take the side of a farmer

and to work with them. How farmers can cultivate their land in new ways and how they can

improve their fate by working in a planned way is very important for the farmers to survive.

Page 36: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 36

3.2.2.Competitor analysis: Mr. Shykh Seraj is the first person who actually started working

on agriculture and bring it on the television in front of the general public. Its an obvious that

“Hridoye Mati o Manush” has no solid competitor in our country. Even if we take that

program into the international arena we will see hardly any channel has any documentary

series on agriculture and the farmers. In our country other commercial television channels do

have agricultural news but not in a broad extent and “Hridoye Mati o Manush” has always

been the market leader.

3.2.3.Interview Highlights of Aditya Shaheen: To study more intensely about the grand

agricultural documentary of our country, I have discussed with Mr. Ad itya Shaheen about his

thoughts, desire and expectation for “Hridoye Mati o Manush”. The summary of the

interview has been given below and the whole interview is attached in appendix 3.

Back on 2004 to teach the farmers how they can use different cultivat ion techniques and also

can use the uncultivated land or pond in their house; Mr. Sykh Seraj started a great initiative

named “ Hridoye Mati o Manush”. This single man brought a revolution in the agricultural

field of Bangladesh. Channel i, the first digital Bangladeshi private channel broadcast this

program. This great initiative or program is concern about certain things. They are- accessing

of farmers into the local market with the proper price for their agricultural goods, using of

more upgraded technology by farmers to cope up with changed whether, climate and building

a strong brotherhood among the farmers. This program not only focuses on the positive sides

of our agriculture but also make the farmers aware about their constitutional rights as a

citizen of this country. This program is receiving huge feedback from the audience about

their demands from the program, and to value the audience an initiative of “Hridoye Mati o

Manush” which is named, “Hridoye Mato o Manusher Daak” where an audience, mainly a

farmer can sit and discuss face to face with a policy maker about their problem. On 2006“

Krishi Budget Krishoker Budget”, another initiative of “Hridoye Mati o Manush” started to

have a discussion among the government bureaucrat and farmers before the national budget.

Another initiative of“Hridoye Mati o Manush” is “ Krishoker Eid Anondo”, which started its

journey on 2006 and take place two major festive times during a year. “ Krishoker Boishakh

Anondo” another great initiative of “ Hridoye Mati o Manush”. This documentary program

has changed the thoughts of our society about the agricultural sector.

Recently there was a grapevine about Hilsha fish to be patented by India and in our own

homeland the government is trying to protect the race of Hilsha fish. In that case trying to

Page 37: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 37

produce Hilsha in pond may not be a successful initiative of the government and they should

not waste time on that research. The program is actually becoming the voice of the mass or

the farmers to get to know properly about their thoughts and demands. Bangladeshi farmers

living in abroad are getting prestigious recognition because off their skill and talent. People

living in the city are lending their rural lands to the poor farmers to cultivate and should take

care of the farmers if there is anything emergency. Bangladesh has 20 million Bigha (A

measure of flat area. 6400 square cubits= 1/3 or 0.33 acre approximately) solid land

property and 10 million people are landless. To aware the government about this “Hridoye

Mati o MAnush” is trying its best. The program is also researching on other countries

regarding the agricultural sector and African countries have good potential to work over their

agriculture.

3.2.4.Sponsor: Grameen Phone is the sponsor of this program. The budget schedule of this

program is attached in appendix 3.

Page 38: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

3.3. Tritiyo Matra

Tritiyo Matra award winning television talk show, broadcast by Channel i and is considered

to be the most popular television talk show in our country. Mr. Zillur Rahman is the host of

this program and he is also directing the program. The program has celebrated its 9 th birthday

with all its glory and by 2008 it has earned 12 million viewers across the country and also

outside of the country. The program is televised 2 times a day. At about 12:00 am and 9:45

am the program is broadcast for the Bangladeshi viewers. People of Bangladesh who are

living abroad is also potential viewers of this legendary talk show. This talk show is a 365

our country are tried to justify or clarify in front of the general people.

Back in 2002- 2003 Bangladesh was facing many unsolved issues regarding politics or other

socio- economic dimension. To try to solve these issues or to clarify the facts behind these

issues by debate or dialogue on 17th July, 2003 a fine talk show Tritiyo Matra was

established. In this program politicians from the government party and also from the

opposition party come and have a debate about different political or socio- political issues.

Apart from the politicians social leaders, celebrities, renowned personalities come and

participate in this program. Through this program the people get to know a lot about the real

scenario of our socio- economic condition and most importantly politics. Here the guest come

and provide proper justification about their actions that have raised questions to the mass.

The program is successful to create awarness among the mass about their constitutional rights

3.3.1. How the Program is Conducted: How the program is conducted, we all already know

about that. But still for the convenience of the readers to this report I am again providing the

process:

Mr. Zillur Rahman, who is the eligible host of this program invites two guests

maximum time or sometimes single guest is also invited by understanding the

7 www.trit iyomatra.com

Page 39: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

importance of the issue. Maximum time guests from government side and also from

opposition side come and talk face to face to clarify any issue that has arisen.

The program host keep asking question to both of the parties and give them the floor

to debate each other or to provide strong logic to support their cause.

People also clarify themselves on the question that has arisen from the public also.

End of the program after the discussion the mass get a picture of the burning issues

and also about the socio- political, cultural, personal issues etc.

3.3.2. About the Author:

Mr. Zillur Rahman is the anchor, director, researcher of Tritiyo Matra. Within this 9 long

years he has become one of the most popular anchor in our country and an indivisible part for

Tritiyo Matra. He has brought a new concept and idea regarding anchoring, presentation in

the television talk show. He was born in Dhaka, on November 21 and his parents name are

Late A.K.M. Khalilur Rahman and Shamim Parvin. This generous person is happily married

with Fahmida Haq who is also a research partner for his program. He is working for Center

for Communication Network ( CCN) and also Channel i. without him the base of Tritiyo

Matra can not be imagined.

Another parson who is related with Tritiyo Matra as a founder, guide, guest host etc. is Mr.

Faridur Reza Sagar, Managing Director of Impress Telefilm Limited, Channel i. About him

Zillur Rahman said “My success has also been largely because of the support and faith I have

received from Faridur Reza Sagar, who had given me this opportunity and freedom”. This

quote of him is preserved in the web site of Tritiyo Matra.

3.3.3. Some Important Moments and facts of this Program:

On 2007 Tritiyo Matra faces some bureaucratic problems regarding its broadcast. On 2007

the then emergency government banned the program for a long time. The time duration was

27 days ( 22nd August- 18th September). The same government also banned the re telecast of

the 1st episode of Lt. Colonel Khandaker Abdur Rashid‟s interview, who is a murder of

Banga Bandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The remaining episodes were also banned to go to

on air by the government.

Page 40: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

General Moeen- U- Ahmed the former Chief of Bangladesh Army was also invited in

Tritiyo Matra as a guest on January 20, 2008 and two times this episode was broadcast in the

national television named, Bangladesh Television.

The program is very soon going to cross 4000 episodes as per the management

expectation. Very recently the program did its 3337 episode on Meher Afroz Shawon ( Wife

of Late Writer Humayun Ahmed), who clarify her thoughts, life, career, family after the

death of the legendary writer Humayun Ahmed. This episode was applauded by huge people,

at the same time some also criticized that initiative taken by the program.

No doubt that Tritiyo Matra is the most highest paid talk show in our country. From the very

beginning Grameen Phone has been the sponsor for this program. This program is playing a

vital role for the development of our society. It is also the longest running talk show in our

country which never become a reason of boredom for the viewers. Each and every single

house has at least 1 single viewer of this program. Through this program the society can

know the real face of our governing body, their contribution, lacking, flaw, biasness to run

the country. It also indicates the line of a political leadership and how positive government

can change our nation‟s fate. To judge the actual good leader and to understand the point of

view of our leaders this program has really created revaluation of mass awareness.

3.3.4.Other Initiatives of Tritiyo Matra:

Tritiyo Matrai Apni ( You in Tritiyo Matra) is a great initiative by Tritiyo Matra. Here

feedbacks, questions, queries from the audience are addressed. Audience can send their

being answered through the program. This program is hosted by Zillur Rahman and directed

by Fahmida Haq. The program is broadcast on every Thursday at 2 am & 12:05 pm and

Friday at 2 am & 12:30 pm.

Another initiative of Tritiyo Matra is Bhalobashar Bangladesh where occasionally mostly

politicians come along with their family members. In some special days or occasions this

program is broadcast in Channel i and this program tries to reveal a different face of the

known people.

3.3.6. Interview Highlights of Mr. Zillur Rahman: To study more intensely about the

grand agricultural documentary of our country, I have discussed with Mr. Zillur Rahman

about “Tritiyo Matra”. The summary of the interview has been given below and the whole

interview is attached in appendix 3.

As tritiyo matra is one of the leading political talk show in our country. I have asked about

his personal interest, target audiences, program structure, and reactions of audiences. From

the very begging Mr. Zillur Rahman has personal interest about politics as his subject of

journalism was politics. Though this program was targeted only the policy maker of our

country, but later on the prospect extends with politicians and media personalities. This

program is completely unbiased to any political party. That‟s why its one of the oldest talk

show in our country running for almost 10 Years. This program is a reflection of the

characteristics of our politicians. Because it‟s a open ground of discussion and general people

can see the approaches of their leaders in front of oppositions, which is totally different from

the election time, where the public only sees the smiling face of the politicians begging for

votes. Mr. Zillur Rahman also talked about the demographics of general people as they are

more aware about the current political situation than before. From the personal viewpoint of

Mr. Zillur Rahman, the core message of this program is to find proper leadership in our

country. The timing for this program is very crucial for its success. Because it also covers the

appropriate time for people living outside of Bangladesh.

3.3.7.Sponsor : Grameen Phone

Branding Sponsor: Grameen Phone is using their title in this program, so they are actually

doing branding sponsor for this program. From the very beginning of this program Grameen

Phone is providing sponsorship

3.3.8.Competitor Analysis: This program has set an ideal example for all other talk shows in

the country. Before that program such type of talk shows were not established in our country.

In that sense it has always become the pioneer. But recently the new television channels are

trying to break the tradition and trying to throw a healthy competition. To sustain in the

future and in the long run this program must change or bring new set design or format in near

future.

3.4.Citycell Channel i Music Awards ( CCMA)

CCMA is a different approach regarding music fraternity and has contributed so much in the

local music industry. To recognize the talented musical guru of our country this is the first

initiative in a shape of award function. When the music of Bangladesh was passing through a

vary bad phase, this initiative from Channel i has helped to hold the trust on behalf of the

music fraternity of this country. To develop the local music of our country this award

ceremony started its journey on 2004. Till that time this grand initiative of music awards has

completed its journey of 8 years. This January, 2013 the 8th CCMA will took place to honor

the talented people from the music fraternity. Through this great initiative Channel i has

3.5.Gaane Gaane Shokal Shuru

When 26 other Bangladeshi channels are producing different mode of musical shows ( rock,

pop, band, jazz, contemporary etc) based on unique day or even special time, for young

vigorous generation; Channel i has contemplated something dissimilar. The managing

director of Impress Telefilm, Channel i Mr. Faridur Reza Sagar generated the idea of a

musical show based on the soothing beauty of early morning. He wanted to target the veteran,

middle aged, retired, working people to be the perfect audience for a early morning musical

show. When he noticed that other channels are preferring modern musical programs he then

decided to make this off track program for a particular audience group. The management

called for a formal meeting where Senior Program Manager Amirul Islam, Program Producer

Ananya Ruma, Program Producer Jamal Reza, singer Leena Taposhi & Shahin Samad. The

management decided to broadcast the early morning musical show in full swing. Along with

a very strong team Channel i started the journey of “ Ganne Ganne Shokal Shuru” on 29 th

March, 2012. The audience has the golden opportunity to call live in this program to confess

their desire or feelings regarding music with their favorite artist.

The theme of the program was selected based on the restful exquisiteness of early sunup. The

on air time was selected at 7:30 am. In the morning time people do select soft melodious song

to heal the mind. To keep that object in mind for the most part Raaga, Classical, Semi-

Classical, Rabindra Sangeet ( Tagore Song) , Nazrul Geeti, Radha Raman, Lalon Geeti,

Hason Raja etc. were selected to be played live on air. Sometimes modern songs are also

been performed by the artists based on the mood of the whether or any special occasion.

To start a new program there are several objects that plays very important role. Initially there

were several resources which were obliged to start the program. As the program was about to

start at the very early morning so there was also a risk of failure in the total collaboration of

the program. There is always a possibility that the main artist can be failed to reach, the

anchor can be failed to reach on time, musicians can lose concentration or cannot cope with

the vocal of the singer. To avoid all this scratch level problems the management decided to

buy a car only for this program. The car is provided to the musicians and also to the artists

and anchor to reach to the office as early as possible. To avoid the limitations regarding

musicians the management decided to appoint five renowned musicians for five different

instruments. They are-

Page 52: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

1. Rooptanu Das Sharma- Key Board

2. Pallab Sanal- Tabla10

3. Gazi Abdul Hakim- Flute

4. Alamgir Hossain- Octopad

5. Monowar Hossain Tutul- Guitar

After the musicians were selected for some weeks before the on air the musicians practiced

together to get a control over the continuation of the program. As anchor 11 Sathi, Konal,

Chaiti, Urmila were selected to carry on the program on diverse days of the week. Before

the program starts the assigned producer of the control panel has to present within 5:30 am to

check the overall operation. He or she needs to check whether the artist is at the office or is

there any type of technical difficulties. The in charge producer needs to check for the make

up artist, the musicians, the sound engineer, snacks for the people, set design, present of the

anchor, payment of the artist etc. After everything is under control the program starts just

after the closing of 7 am news. Initially the management decided to draw a budget for the

operation of the program. The initial budget has been given below-

3.5.3. Sponsor: The program is fully financed by Channel i itself. The higher authority

never wanted any sponsorship as it will create some distortion to the program. If they

take the assistance of the sponsors they are abide by to follow some selected

commercials and it will sabotage the image of that particular early morning show.

3.5.4. Competitor Analysis: Channel i believe they do not have any competition regarding “

Gaane Gaane Shokal Shuru”. In Bangladesh except Channel i there is no other

channel who are taking this type of initiative. Other channels do have music programs

but they do not possess any live morning musical show based on music suited on

early morning. Tara Bangla (India) only broadcasts a program like this but it has no

comparison with our program‟s quality or even other features.

3.5.5. I have taken interviews of two of the producers of this musical show. Mr. Iftekhar

Munim & Ms. Ananya Ruma has cleared their judgment about the program. In the

interview I have tried to know their point of view about the program. What they

3.5.6. An interview with Mr. Iftekhar Munim, Senior Program Producer, Program

Department, Impress Telefilm, Channel i, about his judgment regarding “Gaane

Gaane Shokal Shuru” is attached in appendix 3. Summary of the interview is

given below.

This program was designed to keep the beauty of morning in mind and the target audience is

mainly the veteran citizens of our country. As normally people do not like rock or band type

of music in the morning so soft and melodious type of music is mainly played in this

program. This program helps the target audience to start a new morning by forgetting all the

odds of past. Audiences who love music of “Panchakobi( Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul

Islam, Dijendralal Roy, Rajnikant, Atul Prashad)” are the audience for “ Gaane Gaane

Shokal Shuru”. People can interact with musicians live on telephone. Contemporary music (

1950‟s, 1960‟s, 1970‟s), Lalon, Hason Raja, Radha Raman, Shah Abdul Karim, folk,Vatiyali,

songs for special days are also performed in this program. The main concern of this program

is to prefer the choice of the audience rather than contributing the local music industry

directly. But indirectly its helping the music industry to grow a certain class of audience.

When the program was in the scratch level planning there was some difficulties and most

importantly the fear was lack of perfect musicians at this early time of the morning. But this

problem was solved when the management find out five musicians and recruited them

permanently. From the local music industry singers who perform the basic music of our

culture can perform in this program. The audience provide positive feedback for the program

and they also criticize the program. Overall the reaction of the target audience is quiet good

toward this program. The authority do not believe they really do posses any competitor as in

Bangladesh currently no commercial channel is performing live musical morning show. The

program is not using any sponsorship as it may hamper the concentration of music or it may

become a matter of disturbance for the audience. For future the program is hoping to go for

an overall structural change which means change in set design, lighting, studio etc.

Page 55: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

3.5.7. An interview with Ms. Ananya Ruma, Program Producer, Program

Department, Impress Telefilm, Channel i, about his judgment regarding “Gaane

Gaane Shokal Shuru. Briefly the core part of the interview is given below-

Gaane Gaane Shokal Shuru was a decision of the top level management from Channel i. The

top management thought to bring an early morning musical show for the soft music lovers.

Earlier Channel i had different programs for Tagore song, Nazrul song etc. but after a certain

period the management thought to compile all these categories together and Gaane Gaane

Shokal Shuru was born. Here the audience can directly interact with the singer or musician

and an music artist can perform his or her best 10/11 songs. The target audience for this

program was the working people, veteran citizens, ex government employees etc. Classical,

Semi- classical, Tagore song, Nazrul song, Folk etc. are getting promoted through the

program. Through this program the local music industry is getting benefited because acoustic

musicians are getting a floor to show their talent. Apart from that not so popular artists from

different sections of our local music are getting promotions of their talent. This stage is a very

good platform for the new comers in the music industry. During the planning of the program

technical constraints was one of the top barriers. But the maturity and experience of the

channel easily took care of this problem. The birthday or death anniversary of Bengali

legends like- Abdul Alim, Abbas Uddin, Shah Abdul Karim, Lalon Shah etc are remembered

by this program. The program is enjoying positive reactions from the audience and not only

the target audience but also the kids make call to talk with the artist or musicians. There is no

competitor for this program as live musical program is not included in any other channels

program list. In call facilities for the audience is also absent in other channels live morning

musical show. The program did not accept any sponsorship because of ethical reasons. It

seems the whole day long the channel is busy with broadcasting new highlights or

advertisement, so the management never wanted to bother the audience in early morning. Just

right now there is no plan for drastic change in the program but day by day definitely the

shape or structure of the program will definitely change.

Rates for program, branding and sponsorship to be negotiated.

All payments to be paid by pay Order/ AC Payee Cheque in favour of “ Impress

Telefilm Ltd.”

Sponsorship: So far I am concerned about the sponsorship; it actually depends on the content

of the program, timing of the program, popularity of the program. For example- I can provide

an approximate amount of Grameen Phone‟s sponsorship criteria. The multinational te lecom

Page 57: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 57

company provides a huge amount for whole of the year. For example- suppose Grameen

Phone provides BDT 20 crore per year. They provide sponsorship and hire the suitable place

in the advertisement slot as per their need. If the company wants to brand its name then it can

attach its name with a program which it thinks to be eligible for the company‟s name or

prestige. This is actually called branding sponsorship. For example- Grameen Phone Tritiyo

Matra, Grameen Phone Ajker Shongbaad Potro, Grameen Phone Khelar Khobor etc.

3.7. Steps in the Program: A program has some basic steps to follow. Briefly they are

discussed below and elaborately the steps are attached in appendix 3. Outline/ Synopsis:

First of all the name of the program is fixed by the management. The type of the program and

the nature of the program is selected then. Then the management decides the time duration of

the program. After that who will direct the program, who will compose the music of the

program, are selected. How the technical facilities will be provided is also discussed to make

the program more effective. If the program is in house program then the in house studio of

the channel has to be booked and if the program needs a outside shooting then the shooting

date has to be fixed by the authority. In post production the responsibility of the editing panel

is divided properly and after the editing the program is ready to go on air. The on air date and

time also has to be fixed by the management.

Result for the Programs

Page 59: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 59

I have analyzed 4 different programs of Channel i to understand the reasons behind a

successful program. To get honest opinion from the public or from the new generation, about

what they think about the programs I have taken an online survey. I used

www.surveymonkey.com as my online survey tool. By analyzing this survey result we can

understand the demand of the youth or what they are actually thinking about Channel i‟s

program. I have taken help of the social networks like- face book, twitter, email etc. The

questionnaires are attached in appendix 4.

Recommendation &

Conclusion

Page 72: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 72

5.1 Recommendation:

Structural change need to be done in case of different programs, which are still out of

audience focus. Such as lighting, digitalizing and redecorating the studio.

Research and development team must work on overall channel development rather

than just focusing on single criteria‟s.

Channel i must have an effective human resource department which will work for the

employees betterment.

From the survey and analysis part we have seen that only 37.3% people from the total

sample, who belongs to the young generation watches Hridoye Mati o Manush

sometimes, not regularly. It clearly defines that, they barely have interest in

agricultural shows. So channel I should reform their program according to the mindset

of young generation. Because they are going to hold the key of agricultural business

in future.

There are some program which are not popular, so people aren‟t watching the

advertisement of sponsors before and after those program. That‟s why the actual

reason for sponsorship is hampered. So, the channel should look after this problem.

Citycell Channel i Music Awards is one of the big event in South- East Asia. But, the

survey result says very few people from our locality have idea about this award show.

So, the management should go for more extensive promotional activities.

Even though Tritiyo Matra is still one of the top talk shows in our country. But they

only concentrate on politicians and media personalities for this show. And sometimes

those personalities express the self-made opinion for enhancing their own image.

That‟s why management should bring university students who are going to be the

leader of this country in future. Because only they can talk about what they feel about

the current issue and what needs to be done in political sector.

From the survey and analysis part we have seen that 70.3% people from the total

sample, who belongs to the young generation does not watch „Gaane Gaane Sokal

Shuru‟, which is a clear indication of unpopularity among young generation. So this

program should go for promotional activities in future.

Page 73: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 73

Channel should restructure the programs to make those more successful in future.

Quality production of drama must have high priority. So that generate good revenue

and at the same time public attention.

Page 74: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 74

5.2 Conclusion:

The total revenue of Bangladesh media industry is BDT 1200 core. And a big portion of this

possessed by Channel i, Impress Telefilm Ltd. This clearly indicates how much revenue the

organization is earning and this is one of the major success factors for their programs. They

are the pioneer of private TV channel in our country. From the very beginning they maintain

good relationship with many corporation which are their fixed partner for sponsorship. Their

word of mouth is very consistent with their clients. They are also the pioneer of big events,

reality shows and the production house in our country. In this report I briefly described

different programs of channel I and tried to analyze few of them. I have shown steps of the

program and how they deal with the sponsors. I tried to come up with the success factors and

the thoughts of general people about the program. Hope this report will make some benefit

for the organization itself and my educational purpose.

Appendix 3:

Interview of Shykh Seraj

Q.1. Whenever your name comes up, we visualize a man who is the „soil of soil‟. Now we

want to know how that person was in his childhood.

Shykh Seraj: My birthplace is at the banks of Meghna River. I was brought up among

farmers. Later on, I came to Dhaka with my family and stayed with a joint family who

harnessed great family values. In my childhood days, I keenly observed the sorrows and

agonies of farmers which made me dream about contributing to a developed Bangladesh.

Q.2. Since when did you start thinking about the farming community of Bangladesh?

Shykh Seraj:You see, my purpose of entering the media, right from the beginning was to use

the television for educational purposes rather than entertainment. Following the direction of

the government to use the media for popularizing industrial activities in Bangladesh, we went

out in teams to capture the stories and received tremendous response. Our reports on

production of steel products and sandals in Bangladesh, mostly in Tejgaon came as a shock to

the people. This is when I got the green signal to work with agriculture and its development.

With no one in BTV to create documentaries on agriculture; I stepped up to fill up that

position.

Q.3. In the 80‟s when you chose to work for the farmers; it was quite an off-beat career

option for any young man. Tell us who has been the role-model in your journey.

Shykh Seraj: Well, to be honest, I had no role model. And the career I chose was 100% off-

track and it was tough to uphold such a career option except entertainment purposes. Self-

motivation drew me to do this as there was no scope of having a role model in those days due

to absence of Satellite channels. My family was not much supportive regarding this but they

did provide mental support as they used to believe, there is no harm to do good works.

Q.4. Sir, it is evident that the farmers of all districts are not equally deprived. We would

like to know in which districts the farmers are mostly falling behind and why?

Shykh Seraj: You see, it‟s the climatic change due to which, Bangladesh is in a predicament

and has become more vulnerable. This is the chief most reason. Previously, it was the

Page 86: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 86

northern part of Bangladesh which fell behind other districts. But at present, it‟s the south

which is falling behind due to eight months of flood every year!

Q.5. We have an idea of the sabotages in the macro-economic situation of the farmers.

Can you please share with us your personal experience about the down warding

situation of our farmers?

Shykh Seraj: Most of the poor farmers of our country are not getting the deserved value of

their produced crops. Not only that, they are also taking loans at high interest from money-

lenders which are making them poorer because they cannot pay them back as they don‟t get

the right amount for their produced crops. From what I know; according to the Household

Research Survey, 31% farmers are poor. Even though the research is telling us the decreasing

amount of the poor farmers but still the gap is huge between a solvent farmer and a poor

farmer. Natural calamities are also hampering their way of livelihood. The situation has

reached such levels that about 70% farmers are migrating to cities and becoming garment

workers, rickshaw pullers etc. they are doing so as they want to ensure at least 2 times food

for a day.

Q.6. What are the scopes of farming cash crops in the hill tracts in future, in

comparison to plain lands?

Shykh Seraj: Well, the biggest problem with the hill tracts is the irrigation problem. And

about 60% of the plain land is under watering cultivation but this method is very expensive.

Terrace cultivation is being practiced a lot these days. During dry season, cultivation is good

in Haor area because 15-20% rice can be produced here but during rainy season it gets over

flooded. Pesticides and chemicals are harmful for this area. In the hill tracts, ginger and

tamarind are being cultivated and we have seen what a new positive dimension they have

brought to the economy.

Q.7. In “Firey Chol Maatir Taaney”, you have worked with lots of young minds. Have

you found any traces of potential in these young minds regarding working for our

agriculture?

Shykh Seraj: There were many times when I have been asked whether I‟m trying to make

some urban students into farmers. Truth is, such were never my intentions. It was all about

sowing the seed of 'will' among the young; to build community leadership. This 'will' to do

something for the farmers in future would definitely help the latter. The future leaders will

Page 87: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 87

definitely contribute to the country and its agriculture, realizing the fact that what they faced

on the field wasn‟t exactly a cup of tea, even though they worked temporarily, unlike the

farmers who will be in this job for all their lives.

Q.8. You are one of the owners of channel I. What impact is your image as “Mr. Shykh

Seraj” having on Channel I?

Shykh Seraj: Channel I job is my responsibility and it is a tough schedule, yet things have to

be done. The impact is kind of corporate as the office has to run in a different method.

Q.9.In your travels around many countries in the world, you have learned about various

agricultural technologies and farming practices and applied them in Bangladesh. What

are the impacts of using these technologies?

Shykh Seraj:The Drum Seeder, Leaf Colour Chart and Granular Urea are the three

technologies which are now being massively spread all over the country. Also, during one of

the versions of Krishoker Eid Anondo, I had initiated a game where the farmers had to sow

Granular urea. There, the technique of sowing Granular urea was one of the vital parts of

winning the game as well. Thus, the demonstration of the technology was done only by a

simple but enjoyable game. That‟s how easily the technology can reach the doors of millions

of farmers of the country. Then again, Drum Seeder was given as the first prize during the

Granular Urea Sowing event. I am trying to work for pesticide free agriculture, part of which

includes the propagation of Tricograma, Bracon Hebetor and Sex Pheromone as the

biological insect killers were very much accredited throughout the nation. I am trying to

attach simplified technologies in farmers‟ game show e.g. „Sowing Granular urea‟ and

„Ribbon Retting‟. To save irrigation water, I have a lso tried alternate wetting and drying

technology which is very effective.

Q.10.Can we expect that in the future, we will have a channel based on Bangladesh‟s

agriculture initiated by you?

Shykh Seraj: In many countries of the world, you will see specialized TV channels but here

in Bangladesh, it‟s not available yet. I applied for a separate channel on Agriculture but the

Government did not respond properly. Just think through the help of a small cell phone if

they can drag them to the local agricultural center to know about pesticides or any problem

they are facing with their crops, what a whole agricultural television channel can do?

Hopefully things will change in the future and farmers will easily be able to know about the

Page 88: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 88

climate changes and other necessary information directly from the Agriculture channel. Let‟s

see what happens for their best!

Interview of Aditya Shaheen

1. Tell us something about the scratch level work of this program?

- Its all started on 2004. In BTV when farmers were used to learn the cultivation

procedures from Mr. Shykh Seraj, that time our honorable sir used to teach them

about different cultivation techniques, about how to use fallow or uncultivated land or

even pond, about how to create a poultry farm or how to use the yard in front of the

house in agricultural farm duties. A drastically change in agriculture was invented by

our sir by this 16 long years, when he was working for BTV. Before that people had

limited idea about the contribution of mass media regarding agriculture. Till 1996 he

did the program with BTV and on1999 he along with others formed his own

television channel, Channel i. Till the time farmers were only aware about different

cultivation procedures but not more. From 2004 the upgraded version of the BTV

program was started in Channel i and named “Hridoye Mati o Manush”. This

program from the very beginning was different in its motive than other programs.

Basically we have always been tried to concern about few certa in things. They are-

How the farmers can access into the local market with the proper price

for their agricultural goods.

How the farmers can use more upgraded technology to cope up with

changed whether, climate.

How they can build a strong brotherhood among themselves.

In this program we have not on only focused on the good sides of our agricultural

sector but also focused more on the legal and civil rights of the farmers in different

aspect. More or less it is a program which mainly focus on the Development of

Agricultural Economy. From the very beginning of this program we were receiving

huge feedback from the audience. They have so much dissimilar demands from the

program and to respect our audience in proper way we started “Hridoye Mato o

Manusher Daak” where an audience, mainly a farmer can sit and discuss face to face

with a policy maker about their problem. Through this program we were trying to

Page 89: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 89

solve the problems regarding farmers constitutional rights, their market access

capabilities etc. but still we thought about the role of farmers in our national budget.

We noticed that before the final national budget the government sit and discuss with

different communities in our society but not with the farmers. To demolish that

system and to build an opportunity for the farmers to talk with a bureaucratic of

government before national budget we formed another wing of this program called “

Krishi Budget Krishoker Budget” on 2006. We are conceited to say that it has now

passed its 6th year successfully. Its very important to keep motivating the farmers

apart from raising them about their civic rights and to keep that prospect in mind we

formed “ Krishoker Eid Anondo” from 2006. This program applause the farmers

during the two biggest festivals of Bangladesh. That are- Eid- Ul- Fitr and Eid- Ul-

Adha. Apart from this two biggest eve we also broadcast this program during Pahela

Boishakhi as “ Krishoker Boishakh Anondo” and during ICC ( International Cricket

Council)World Cup Tournament we arranged the special episode called “ Krishoker

World Cup Anondo”.

Through this program a revolutionary change in the agriculture has come and now-a-

days the television journalist or even the print media journalist has taken the

agriculture as a must area to study and you can see every major national daily has a

big portion on agriculture. There is a major achievement for us, which is a single

documentary program has changed the big portion of the society and people‟s way of

thinking. Earlier it was absurd to take agricultural studies as a qualification of

working in mass media but today we can see a person who has knowledge about that

sector, may get a great chance to work in the mass media. We have achieved a lot

from our agricultural industry and we feel so proud of that, 17 million people eat their

own produced crops.

2. Recently we heard that India has patented “ Hilsha fish” and “ Jamdani” as

their own product? What is your reaction after hearing that?

- Well to answer this question I will say I heard they are still working on that. If they

have really done that so it‟s a failure of us and the government I have to admit. We

are also failing to brand our local products in front of the entire world. I expect people

will upgrade their love for the country more. Just some days back India was collecting

Hilsha from us and still Ganges has a lot of this fish. In comparison with that point the

Page 90: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 90

Meghna and Padma which were known as the homeland for Hilsha is not anymore

producing the national fish. The government I trying to protect the national fish a lot

from the fishermen who are killing the Mother Hilsha fish or the immature fish.

Sometimes the effort of the government does work but sometimes not. Last year the

production was quite low. But this year we do expect to achieve a great portion.

3. We also heard that, the government is trying to produce Hilsha fish in pond? Do

you think it is by any chance possible?

- It is not possible and I must say this experimentation has been a waste of time since

the 1980‟s. except doing this type of experiments what the government can do is, to

improve our local grown fish species. Like- how to improve the progenitor of the

local fish species. Ours is a country of river but we are losing the water level and its

causing a harm to fish production. Poor village fellow can not get proper fish which is

big source of protein. The government should try to improve these poor scenario of

our country people instead of wasting of their valuable time on Hilsha Cultivation in

pond. The Ministry of Agriculture must focus on all these issues and try to mitigate

their lacking regarding research. The particular minister of a ministry must have idea

about his own are of interest. Take as example- the agricultural minister must

understand the zoological conditions, the demand, need of the farmers.

4. To take all these as concern, how “Hridoye Mati o Manush” is contributing?

- All these that I am discussing with you have actually been broadcast through

“Hridoye Mati o Manush”. They are the voice of our program. From the very

beginning of the program we are still trying to show the government what to do for

the wellbeing of our agricultural industry. Now the most spectacular thing is that the

government, different non- governmental organizations, sponsors are also taking

“Hridoye Mati o Manush” as the voice of farmers and trying to provide proper

feedback.

5. For the mass who are from non- agricultural field, do you have any

recommendation?

- We are trying our best. From our show we have already portrayed 15 foreign

country‟s successful agricultural ventures. We have uphold the success stories of

Page 91: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 91

foreign farmers, as well as success stories of Bangladeshi farmers who are gaining

prestige in abroad.

6. So, do you mean we do have homeland farmers who are cultivating abroad?

- Yes of course. In abroad Bangladeshi farmers are gaining huge success by their

contribution. Like- in Oman people from regular Bangladeshi agricultural family have

revolutionized farming concept. In Qatar one of the largest agricultural market is run

by our country people. Even European country like- Italy is also among the list of the

countries where our people are ruling.

7. What are they basically cultivating?

- They are cultivating crops, fruits etc. and in a very successful way. When our own

people are making the abroad agricultural friendly, meanwhile we must think about

agricultural development and love our country. The countrymen must understand that

our soil can produce a huge amount of sufficient crops which may occur to be the best

achievement for us. We alone can fulfill the need of entire nation without any other

country‟s help. All we need to love our country. Beside I have to mention that, rural

people who are always fighting with the obstacles of the nature and indeed producing

a huge amount of crops for us are maximum time underestimated by the urban people.

People living in the city must respect these good hearted man power of our country

who are our priceless asset.

8. In this point I want to ask that, we see a lot of city people have abandoned lands

in village, that are unused? Do you have any message for them?

- Here I must say in present situation not a single land is really vacant. Maximum

people are using their vacant land in many purposes. People living in city are even

buying lands from the poor rural farmers. Thus sometimes the farmers are becoming

landless. These farmers are working on hire for the lands they sold to the metro

people and they are not getting proper assistance from the land owner. Even if there is

no assistance from the new land owners, still they always are demanding their land

fare from the poor farmers. It does not matter, if the farmers can not make money by

selling proper amount of crops, due to natural disasters. Here I have to mention that

system like “ Mahajoni ( Relating to usury or money lending)”, from the old age time.

Page 92: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs Page 92

Many poor farmers are becoming landless day by day. This is absolutely an alarming

situation for us.

9. Here in this sticky situation what can be the positive contribution of “Hridoye

Mati o Manush”?

- “Hridoye Mati o Manush” is trying to improve this situation. We are against building

any kind of construction business or industry in the cultivable lands. We are truing to

protect the civic rights of the landless farmers who are working in their own land as a

hired worker; because they sold the land due to poverty. We are also working on the

housing issues of the landless farmers continuously. Here I would like to mention that

in Bangladesh there are 20 million Bigha (A measure of flat area. 6400 square

cubits= 1/3 or 0.33 acre approximately) solid land property and 10 million people are

landless. So if the land is distributed equally among the population, each landless

family will get 2 Bigha land where they can build their home and also cultivate crops

to feed the family. Due to some issues regarding our policy making these steps are not

taken properly.

10. After 10 years how do you look into “Hridoye Mati o Manush”?

- After 10 years the pattern will be according to the demand of the time and people. As

we take account of the recommendations of the general mass and farmers their need

and desire will have a vast impact. Like- already due to the demand of present

situation of the climate change we are working on that. We are also showing the

global prospects of agriculture. Through mass media we have proven the development

of agriculture is possible and information can be exchanged. In future we are of

course thinking to research for international arena of agriculture. To take “Hridoye

Mati o Manush” as a guide different countries, specially African countries can try to

work on their agriculture.

11. Can we follow the trade theories of Absolute Advances or Comparative

Advances in international trade?

- No, I thing in present world non of the independent countries will agree to exchange

food items or crops with another country without money just by exchanging. Every

single country is aware of their own interest of trade. Beside that they are also now

careful to meet their own local

An Interview of

Zillur Rahman, Anchor and Director of Tritiyo Matra

1. What were your interests to do this unique type of political talk show/program?

Answer: First of all, I have interest in politics and my subject of journalism was also politics.

Secondly, when we started this program, our country had an ineffective parliament, opposition

party don‟t visit parliament. We have such political culture where active political parties don‟t

participate in dialog or conversation. That‟s why initially we tried to start a pilot project by this

talk show.

2. Can you tell me, when you have started this program, which were you target

audiences?

Answer: At the beginning, we have targeted the policy makers of our country. But after our first

show we understand that this program is not for the policy makers, at least not for all. This was

our first feedback from 1st-3rd show.

3. Well if you don‟t mind can I ask you a personal question about this program? (After

agreeing), Do you/ program advisors have special concern or weakness in certain

political party while doing this program?

Answer: No, Definitely not. If I had I would not have been do this program for 10 years. Or I

would do another program now.

4. Another thing is that, do you think that by this program, the real face of politicians

and real political scenarios are successfully revealing to general public?

Answer: To me, we are enough successful about this. About the face you have said, it was

hidden before, but now it‟s exposed to general people. No one knew that these politicians are this

type of people. Now they know about their culture, standard, educational background by Tritiyo

Matra. We need a positive change. We should not promote only the bad sides of politics. Now

people are more aware about the situation. It was said before that “Money can buy votes”. Now

people take money from politicians, but they don‟t vote for them!!! Now you can see where

Page 99: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 99

political parties nominate good & deserving candidates (those who don‟t have any allegation for

corruption), they usually won in their election area. Though, after getting the opportunity many

of them become spoiled by the web of corruption.

5. Sometimes Tritiyo Matra is called as a mini parliament program, how do you feel

about that?

Answer: Actually I‟m a professional. So praise or negative words can‟t affect me at all. I think

I‟m calm or quite and tactful type. It‟s kind of like playing test match in cricket field; T20 is not

an option, because I might get out if I just want to score six in every ball. I don‟t get bored by

doing this program. That‟s the only reason I have been with this program for 10 years.

6. What are the core messages of this program to you?

Answer: Well, there are several core messages, not a fixed one. Bangladesh has infinite

possibilities and we also have potential to do something great, but we have lack of proper

leadership in our country.

7. Generally, mass people does not participate in this type of talk show, do you have

any plan in future so that mass people can participate?

Answer: We have already done several outdoor program of Tritiyo Matra. Hopefully we will

again do this in future.

8. What kind of benefit society is getting from this talk show?

Answer: When people have lack of dependency in our judiciary system, they will tend to find

the truth about the politicians. And this program is a reflection of politicians of our country.

9. You have done outdoor program for tritiyo matra in past. Do you have any plan to

invite university students in your program?

Answer: We have done program with university students before, but not with the name of

Tritiyo Matra. However we take polls and comments from university students and later on we

discuss with those issues at Tritiyo Matra.

Page 100: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 100

10. Do you think the quota system for politicians should be abolished or not? Sons and

daughters of MP‟s or politicians will get preference in admission on school, colleges

and universities?

Answer: No, that quota is already abolished. Though we can arise question about their other

quota‟s like, Tax free imported car etc

11. Do you think the Timing for your program is appropriate for audience?

Answer: Obviously it is. You will see, most of talk shows are now telecasts in late night. And

the timing for Tritiyo Matra is also friendly with the international times, which is helpful for

Bangladeshis in abroad. Tritiyo Matra is first to initiate this time zone for talk shows in

Bangladesh

Thank you for your cooperation. It was really a thoughtful session with you.

TRITIYO MATRA

Episode: 316815

Date: 09 April 2012

Host: Zillur Rahman

Guests : Saleh Ahmed Teeta, Writer & Columnist Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, Vice President

(Finance), Bangladesh Garments Manufacturer's Exporters Association (BGMEA)

Subject: Bangladesh‟s Economy

Anchor: What is your take on the present state of country‟s economy?

Babu: The readymade garment sector is the largest industrial sector in the country. More

specifically, textile and clothing is the largest sector. If I want to describe overall economy in one

word, I would say that Bangladesh‟s economy is affected by the global financial recession.

Country‟s current economic parameters are not good. Suppose, for instance, liquidity crisis in the

bank is a big problem.

Anchor: You see, many, particularly the government, are claiming that there was the liquidity

crisis.

Babu: You see, there is the liquidity crisis in the banking sector, no matter somebody accept it or

not. Some might not accept the reality for some political reasons. But the reality is that there is

the liquidity crisis. If there is really no a liquidity crisis, why are the banks not investing or

financing or giving money [loans]. The activities of the banks have made the things clear that

there is the liquidity crisis. Margin of the house loan has been increased. Purchasing of [private]

cars are being discouraged. Long-term investment in the industrial sector is being discouraged.

Though the readymade garment sector is not directly affected by the liquidity crisis, we must

15

www.trit iyomatra.com

Page 105: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 105

need to go to the banks if we want to expand our business. The big problem in the RMG sector is

insufficient infrastructure. We have long been demanding for gas, power and specialized

economic zones with road communication facilities so that our activities could be carried out

smoothly.

Anchor: Why do you [garment manufacturers] need to raise demands to the government for the

development in the sector whereas the RMG is the largest sector which enjoys maximum

incentives and stimulus from the government and its trade body BGMEA is the most powerful

trade body in the country?

Babu: It is merely a perception that we get maximum privileges from the government. The RMG

sector gets minimum incentives from the government. Whatever incentives are given in the

sector is given only to the knit industry. Only the knit sector gets five percent stimulus. In fact,

the amount of the stimulus is only 3.7 percent though. We want the government only to provide

us with necessary policy support.

Anchor: What is your take on the country‟s economy?

Teeta: He [Babu] said they get five per cent incentives. I must say that you are lucky enough to

get something from the government. Inefficiency, nepotism and polarization in the

administration have engulfed the entire country. There is the crisis in country‟s banking sector no

matter how strongly the government claims that there is no crisis. Even amidst this fund crisis,

three Non-Resident Bangladeshi [NRB] banks were allowed to function and other seven banks

are on the pipeline to begin their functions. A huge amount of capital will enter into these banks.

The government, on the one hand, is saying there is no crisis but, on the other, is imposing duties

on luxury items, even on consumer items. What does it mean? The people nowadays easily

understand what means what? The RMG sector is still surviving because of its own efficiency

and resilience. How can the growth rate be maintained amidst the financial, electricity and gas

crises? Everything depends on effective management and efficiency.

Babu: Money has been diverted through share market. Apart from this, there has been some bad

investment. Banks invested money in the share market.

Page 106: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 106

Teeta: The government itself took money from the banks.

Anchor: The government took money for setting up rental power plants to alleviate electricity

crisis.

Babu: The government went for investing huge money in non-productive sector. For these

reasons, dynamism and pace in the financial sector have slowed down. The investment made for

the power and gas sector did not turn to be successful. I am not hopeful of getting an immediate

solution to the power crisis. The Bangladesh Bank as well as the finance ministry should come

forward to keep the wheels of country‟s economy running. We are issuing license for new banks

instead of taking proactive measures to keep economy functional. Not only in the banking sector,

there are many sectors where there are some wrong decisions. I came through a news report to

know that as much as some 3000 vessels are kept idle at the Chittagong port. That means that

import has decreased and secondly giving licenses to more vessels for the port was not well

thought out decision.

Anchor: What would you add?

Teeta: A fair and stable political situation is an imperative for economic growth in a country.

Politics is the driving force of a country. Talents are not joining politics today. Today‟s politics is

devoid of farsighted political leadership.

Anchor: We would be hoping the political leadership will take pragmatic decisions for the

country‟s economic well-being.

Gaane Gaane Shokal Shuru

An interview with Mr. Iftekhar Munim, Senior Program Producer, Program

Department, Impress Telefilm, Channel i, about his judgment regarding “Gaane Gaane

Shokal Shuru” is attached in appendix 3. Gist of the interview is given below.

1. Why you decided to broadcast this type of early morning live musical program?

- The morning time is full of soothing beauty which is a blessing of the mother

nature. You know this time is not for something rock and roll type of song. People

actually do not like this type of musicals in the morning. Each day starts with a

new planning and new hope. We all leave the bad memories of yesterday behind

us to start the new day. Keeping the thought of good start of the day we decided to

produce this program and also named the program like that.

2. When you were planning for this program who were your target audience?

- We actually targeted a specific type of audience. People who love to listen music

during the early morning time and also want to interact with the musicians, artists

we think they are our chosen audience. This program helps to create a bondage

with in between the audience and also the artist and musicians. I want to add more

that, who are the veteran citizens of our country, who loves soft melodious song

regardless generation, who loves music from “Panchakobi( Rabindranath

Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Dijendralal Roy, Rajnikant, Atul Prashad)” are

the audience for “ Gaane Gaane Shokal Shuru”.

3. What type of songs/ music are getting promotions through this live broadcasting

program?

- Songs from “Panchakobi( Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam,

Dijendralal Roy, Rajnikant, Atul Prashad)”, contemporary music ( 1950‟s,

1960‟s, 1970‟s), Lalon, Hason Raja, Radha Raman, Shah Abdul Karim,

folk,Vatiyali, songs for special days are actually getting priority through this

program.

Page 115: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 115

4. Do you consider that, through “ Gaane Gaane Shokal Shuru” you are able to

contribute to the local music industry properly?

- We are actually not thinking deeply about contributing the whole music industry

directly through our program. Our main concern is the choice of the audience. We

are looking toward making a new clan of audience who would prefer this type of

different program. Beside that if you look you will see, indirectly the program is

enhancing the music industry. If it is able to create a bunch of audience the

demand of music will increase. Thus the music industry will enhance when the

demand will increase for these type of music.

5. What type of constraints you faced during making the plan of this program?

- Yes we did face a lot during the making of this program. First nightmare was the

lacking of musicians for this so early morning show. There was a possibility that

very few people would agree to do this show. Sometimes we also have to select

musical instruments considering the choice of the artist. Like- Mandira, Violin,

Setar, Tanpura etc. We had to face a lot of problems to deal with all these stuff.

Finally we decided to keep five musicians who can play all the basic instruments

for a musical show. We also allow the personal musicians of a artist to perform on

our stage as per the comfort reason.

6. From the local industry what type of singers are performing in this show

regularly?

- The songs that I have mentioned above are the core to this show. Singers who

perform these type of music are actually getting priority in our show. Veteran and

experienced singers are performing regularly here. Beside them new generation

singers are also performing really well and mind blowing.

7. Tell us something about the audience reaction?

- The best part of the audience is that they are calling to share their thoughts.

Sometimes they are praising the artist or the music. They also praise about the

musicians. Yes, criticisms are also there and beside that they are also providing

Page 116: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 116

proper information. For example: audience are sometimes helping by providing

information about the song, lyricist, background of the song etc. viewers from

abroad also providing their recommendation about the program.

8. In comparison with competitors of other channels, how you will look into our

program?

- In our country there is no such program based on the nature of early morning.

Tara Music ( India) only delivers a program like that; but they have their

limitations. They are not performing this type of initiate extensively. So I might

say we really do not posses any competitors.

9. Is there any logical reason of not using any sponsorship for this program?

- Yes, of course. If we put sponsorship in the program, that may distort the

concentration of the audience. It may make a good profit, but the satisfaction level

of the audience will be diminished. So the management has decided not to put any

sponsorship in this program.

10. In future do you have any plan to develop the program more efficiently?

- I and my team, we really do. We want to develop the set design, lighting, studio,

gesture of the anchor. We are thinking of appointing more musicians to bring

more change. Overall we are planning to bring a structural change.

Page 117: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 117

An interview with Ms. Ananya Ruma, Program Producer, Program Department,

Impress Telefilm, Channel i, about her judgment regarding “Gaane Gaane Shokal Shuru

1. Why you decided to broadcast this type of early morning live musical program?

- That was a decision of the management. Program managers or seniors who are

designing program, they thought to broadcast something musical to the music

lovers. Earlier we had compilation of different music like- Tagore songs, Nazrul

Geeti etc recorded, and then we thought what can be done more for the audience.

From that thought we actually planned to build a live musical show where

audience will call and directly interact with the artist. Here an artist can sing any

10/11 famous song oh him or her and the audience will get a chance to interact

with their favorite singer.

2. When you were planning for this program who were your target audience?

- Definitely the target audience in the office going people, who can enjoy the

program early morning and get a fresh start for their work life. Basically veteran

people who are retired, ex government sectaries are our audience. We also do

posses non returning Bangladeshi audience to love our show.

3. What type of songs/ music are getting promotions through this live broadcasting

program?

- Classical, Semi- classical, Tagore song, Nazrul song, Folk etc. are getting

promoted through our program.

4. Do you consider that, through “ Gaane Gaane Shokal Shuru” you are able to

contribute to the local music industry properly?

- Yes of course. Here in this program musical instruments like- Esraj, Mandira,

Violin, Harmonium etc. are played by the musicians. We can see the number of

acoustic musicians are lowering in their number day by day. Through this

program they are getting promoted and their music also. Beside the musicians the

renowned singers like Bonna di( Rezwana Chowdhury Bonna) is performing.

Page 118: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 118

With her the interns are also getting chance to perform on the stage. So, this is

role playing as a platform for any new comer.

5. What type of constraints you faced during making the plan of this program?

- We were thinking of the technical constraints as the program is about to start at

the early morning. To start the program by managing everything regarding

technical support; that was a challenge for us. But of course Channel i is now 14

and it is enough mature to handle this type of technical constraints easily.

6. From the local industry what type of singers are performing in this show regularly?

- From every sector singers are getting priority. The birthday or death anniversary

of Bengali legends like- Abdul Alim, Abbas Uddin, Shah Abdul Karim, Lalon

Shah etc are remembered through our program. Singers who specially s ing their

song or even their descendant come and perform with us in these special occasion.

7. Tell us something about the audience reaction?

- Audience reaction is really excellent. If it was not then there was no chance to get

a phone call. People do call so early because they like it. Not only the aged or

mature people call but also sometimes kids do also make call.

8. In comparison with competitors of other channels, how you will look into our

program?

- Personally I do not go for any competition. You know different channels do have

different pattern of programs. Yes they do have cold war but its not mentionable.

But if you are asking about audience choice, then I think we are following that.

Because in the morning others may have recorded musical show, but not live in

reality. Beside being a live show it also takes the participation of the audience. So

these two points do make us a bit stronger than other channels.

9. Is there any logical reason of not using any sponsorship for this program?

Page 119: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 119

- Ethically we do not go for sponsorship. Already our channel has some rules

regarding the whole day of broadcasting news highlights, advertisements. So we

decided not to use any sponsorship here.

10. In future do you have any plan to develop the program more efficiently?

- Just right now I can not say that we will have any drastic change in the program.

But surely day by day it is changing a bit. So lets hope for the best in near future.

the program anchor has to follow a script based on the singer and also songs

which the singer will sing live on television. The anchor must need to be smart

emergency situations come over. The script of the anchor is often written by the

respectable producers of the program and sometimes by the anchor thyself. There

Page 121: Factors of Success Behind Channel i Programs

Success Factors of Channel i Programs Page 121

is no necessitate of memorizing each and every single word from the script.
