Soil erosionSoil erosion
- Is the process wherein the soil is brought down from high to low land by agents like water and wind.
- It occurs often in steeper land areas, much soil is eroded when heavy rains and strong winds ocur.
Soil pollutionSoil pollution• Is the destruction of Earth’s healthy and
productive soil by the addition of undesirable materials.

What do you know about pollution?
What are the causes of pollution?
Causes of soil pollutionCauses of soil pollution• People cut down, burn trees in the mountains ( loggers and kaingineros )• Loggers go to mountains to cut down trees. Most of
them do not replace the trees that they cut, so mountains become denuded.
• When mountain is denuded , there are no more roots to absorb rainwater or to hold the soil.During heavy rains, water rushes down and causes floods in lowlands. The soil in the mountain is also carried down or eroded to the low lands and deposited in rivers , streams , and oceans.
• Too much erosion can carry away soil that we need.
Causes of soil pollutionCauses of soil pollution1.Soil becomes polluted when chemicals
and wastes from factories, hospitals , and farms are dumped into the soil.
• These chemicals and wastes make soil poisonous for plants , animals, and people.
Causes of soil pollutionCauses of soil pollution2. Garbage or solid wastes from homes and
wet markets, which are not disposed of properly, make the soil polluted.
Causes of soil pollutionCauses of soil pollution3. Excessive use of fertilizers and insecticides in
farming.
• Farmers often use too much fertilizer to increase their harvest.
• To get rid of pest, farmers spray their crops with insecticides.
• These chemicals destroy organisms that help renew the soil. The soil becomes barren or unproductive.
Causes of soil pollutionCauses of soil pollution4.Wastes from mines.
• Metals are processed so they can be used to make jewelry, wires coins, and other metallic objects.
• Metal processing produces waste water that flows into the land and rivers. The soil where mine wastes flow is damaged. Plants cannot grow in it.
Effects of soil pollutionEffects of soil pollution• Soil pollution destroy plants and cause diseases to
people and animals.
1. Effects of pollution on plantsa. young seedlings decay even before they appear above the soil surface.
b.roots decay or wither. This interferes with the supply of water in the stems and leaves so the plants eventually die.
c. plants will wither and die since polluted soil interferes with the supply of nutrients needed for plants growth and development.
Effects of soil pollutionEffects of soil pollution2.Effects on humans and other animals
- human depend and other animals depend on plants for food. If plants are affected by pollution, people and other animals can also get sick and may eventually die. - Soil pollution can cause famine.
If we want to continue enjoying abundant food , lumber, and other plant products, we need to take care of our soil.
Without soil, there will be no trees and plants.
There is a need for soil conservation.
Soil conservation is caring for and using soil wisely to prevent soil erosion and to maintain the quality of the soil.
Soil is one of the natural resources we have.
Soil conservationSoil conservation1. Plant trees
- we need to continue planting trees especially along the slopes, to reduce soil erosion.the roots of trees grow deep into the soil; thus , the soil particles become firmer and stronger
Soil conservationSoil conservation2.Dispose garbage properly
- segregate
a.biodegradable(discarded food, fruits, and vegetables)
b. non-biodegradable- garbage that may be reused or recycled( plastic,
bottles, and cans)
Soil conservationSoil conservation3. Use alternative planting strategies
a. Plant in alternating rows ( strip cropping)- it gives soil natural covering.
Soil conservationSoil conservation.
b. give the soil time to rest
- farmers do not plant crops continuously
- skip one planting season before planting the next crop
Soil conservationSoil conservationc. avoid planting the same crop every year
- to restore the minerals lost in the soil
Soil conservationSoil conservation4. Help minimize chemical pollutants in soil
- join clubs of environmentalists.
- inform factory owners about the ills of polluting soil
- give away leaflets urging the factory owners to stop polluting the soil
Soil conservationSoil conservation
5. Avoid excessive use of chemical fertilizers
- make the soil extremely acidic or salty
- condition is harmful to plant life
Pass the paperPass the paper
• Write one proposed way on how to take care or conserve the soil.
Key QuestionsKey Questions
A. How is the earth’s surface change overtime?
B. How do man’s activity impact the earth?
C. How can you take care of the soil?
GeneralizationGeneralization• The surface of the earth is not the same
as it was before and continues to change overtime due to some factors.
• The features and characteristics of the soil are affected by many natural and man-made activities.
• The soil is an important earth’s resources and everyone should care for it.
ValuingValuing
• Let us help control erosion by P_________ t_________.
• Trees that are cut down should be r______ by planting trees. There should be more trees in mountains. Young trees should be properly taken care of for them to grow big.
• Use natural resources w________
