A.ADDonpage165,newArrangementwithMUSCARRANGEMENT WITH THE COLLEGES OF MEDICINE AND DENTALMEDICINE AT MUSC- BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BIOLOGY: PRE-PROFESSIONAL STUDIES OPTIONThis arrangement provides an accelerated pathway to either Medical School or DentalSchool at MUSC. FMU students, meeting all program requirements, may apply foradmittance to MUSC’s doctorate programs after completing 90 semester hours ofundergraduate education at FMU. Matriculation into MUSC is not guaranteed andadmission decisions are made solely by MUSC. If admitted into the doctorateprogram, FMU accelerated students are held to the same standards of progressguidelines as all other students in the programs. After successful completion of thefirst year of professional school (as defined by MUSC’s aca demic standards), FMUwill award a student an earned Bachelor of Science in Biology: Pre-professionalStudies Option.Admission into this program is highly selective. In order to apply, a student musthave completed 22 hours of math and science courses and have a cumulative GPA of3.5 or above. In order to apply, the student must submit an “Intent to Participate Form”to the Registrar’s Office. 3. Students are expected to gain significant experiences in a clinicalsetting to inform their decision to pursue a professional health career.While not required, it is recommended that students gain these experiencesthrough the independent planning of an FMU Pre-Health Internship(Biology 494).
In the summer of the sophomore year and following, students are required to apply tothe appropriate professional program at MUSC, gain admittance and successfullycomplete the first year. This process will involve the following:
1. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA above a 3.5 foradmission.2. Students must take the appropriate Admission Test (MCAT forMedical School/DAT for Dental School). The MCAT score must fall inthe top quartile. The minimum DAT score needed is a 20 on each sectionof the DAT.3. Students must submit an application to MUSC using theappropriate Application Service procedures (AMCAS for MedicalSchool/AADSAS-Dental School).4. In addition to the letters of recommendation needed for thestandardized Application Service, students must have a letter from theirAcademic Advisor or the Chair of the Biology Department outlining whythey are prepared for the rigors of the accelerated program.5. Once students are accepted and successfully completes (accordingto MUSC’s academic standards) the first year of the medical/dentalcurriculum,he/she must submit an official transcript to the Registrar’s
Office at FMUfor conferralof the Bachelor of Science inBiology:Pre-professionalStudies Optiondegree.6. If students desire to participate in one of FMU’s commencementceremonies (December or May), he/she must submit an Application ofDegree before the appropriate deadline.
Ifstudents decide to withdraw from this program, they must submit their decision inwriting to their Academic Advisor, the Chair of the Biology Department, and theRegistrar. If a student leaves MUSC before successfully completing (according toMUSC’s academic standards) the first year of Medical/Dental School, the studentmay return to FMU to complete a normal Bachelor of Science in Biology. This willrequire at the minimum, an ecology course, a plant biology course, senior seminarand enough transfer/elective hours to reach the 120 total hours needed for graduation.
Rationale for A:Thisisanewprogramofstudywehavebeengivenapprovalbytheadministrationtopursue.The90hourstakenhereatFMUwillcompletealloftherequirementsforabiologymajorwiththeexceptionoftheecology,plant,andseniorseminarcourses.ThisacceleratedpathwaywithMUSCisaimedatreducingstudents’overalleducationalcostfromundergraduatethroughprofessionalschool,shortenthestudents’lengthofstudyrequiredtogettheterminaldegree.ItalsohelpsusretainsomeofourmosttalentedstudentsinSouthCarolina.Thisdegreeisnotexpectedtoaffectmanystudents.Therigorwillbesomewhatprohibitivetoallbutthemosthighlycapablestudents.MUSChasalwaysallowedstudentstoapplywhentheyhad90hours.Thisissimplyaninitiativetoensurethatstudentswishingtofollowthisacademicpathwillbemaximallycompetitive.ThisagreementalsoprovidesamechanismbywhichFMUcanreclaimtheseacceleratedstudentsasgraduates.ThiswouldbesimilartothePre-PharmacyprogramwithMUSCandUSCandtheDual-DegreeEngineeringprogramwithClemson.
