Principal’s News

Thank you once again for your understanding with our water supply issues. Hopefully with the fixing of this latest leak it will be the end of what has been a very expensive six months for our school with in excess of $31000 of water being recorded in usage. The issue on Friday with the flooding of one of our Science labs was unrelated to either leaks and was a case of normal wear and tear with a Kinko nut and olive giving way and requiring replacement. Congratulations to our students and staff on what was a very successful swimming carnival last week. Everyone in attendance eagerly participated or supported their house teams. A big thank you to Mr Zac Rue for his organisation of the day. Likewise, a massive thank you to all the parents who assisted throughout the day in different roles or attended to support our students. Congratulations to Mr Mark Edwards on being awarded a NSW Teachers Federation life membership badge last Friday. This award is a just recognition of Marks long term commitment, not only to the Federation in various capacities within our school but also to education in general.

This Tuesday is our first P&C meeting for the year and I would like to encourage parents, especially those new to our school, to come along and be involved in our school. The meeting is held in the main admin building at 5pm. Congratulations goes to Darcy Merchant for being this week’s winner of our weekly merit draw.

Our School FIRST AID AND SICKNESS POLICY - SUMMARY

(A copy of the full document can be obtained from the school website)

All staff at Canowindra High School have completed Emergency Care training in accordance with the Department of Education requirements. The delegated school’s first aid officer is Mrs Tina Gruessing.

1. Minor Injury In the case of minor injuries, which may include small cuts, bruises and sprains, first aid will be administered. Staff administering first aid are required to take universal precautions.

2. Major Injury In the case of serious injury, appropriate emergency first aid will be carried out to stabilise the person’s condition, with

universal precautions being taken. The Ambulance will be called and the person will be transported to the Canowindra Hospital. Every effort to notify a

parent/guardian/caregiver or other emergency contact will be made. Canowindra High School will maintain Ambulance cover (insurance) so that there is no cost to students, staff or their

families for their transport to Canowindra Hospital. If the injury occurs where Canowindra Hospital is not the nearest hospital, such as on an excursion, Ambulance

transport will be to the nearest hospital as determined by the Ambulance officer in attendance.

3. Sickness or Illness Parents are asked to provide information to the school, using the enrolment form, about any medical conditions,

disabilities, allergies or any other factors that may have any bearing on the health of their child. Parents are advised to keep their children at home or make alternative arrangements for them to be looked after if

they are sick before leaving for school.

4. Medication No medication will be given to a student unless it is supplied by a parent/guardian or medical practitioner with clear

written consent given by the parent or medical practitioner except in emergencies involving asthma or anaphylaxis. Student medication is to be provided to the school’s front office with clear written details from a parent or guardian or

medical practitioner, of the amount being provided at that time, and instructions regarding time and dosage. It is the responsibility of the student to come to the office at the appropriate time.

On excursions, medication is to be given to the nominated staff member with clear written details from a parent, guardian or medical practitioner of the amount being provided at that time, the instructions regarding time and dosage. The teacher will provide a suitable place for the storage of the medication.

Students suffering from asthma/anaphylaxis should have with them any required preventer/epipen. In addition, each medical kit will contain an emergency supply of Ventolin and epipen, to be used if necessary.

What do I do when…..

I AM FEELING SICK? Students who are feeling sick during class should tell their teacher who will send you with a note to the front office for

medical attention. If you feel unwell at recess or lunch time you should report to the front office for treatment.

Parents/guardians may be contacted for any student who reports sick. If you feel well enough to return to class you must

inform the front office before returning.

Congratulations Mr Edwards! Mark Edwards was awarded life membership of the Canowindra Association, branch of the New South Wales Teachers Federation, at a ceremony in Canowindra on Friday 16 February. This was in recognition of his long membership and leadership of the local group. Mark has been a member of the union since his days at Sydney Teachers College, where he signed up as a student member in 1978. The local associations are the foundation stones of the union structure and are directly represented at monthly council meetings as well as at an annual conference. All policy decisions of the NSWTF are made at these meetings. There is an executive group who run the day to day functions of the union but it is the local associations that determine the directions of the union. Mark said that when he arrived in Canowindra the Association was not active. With the support of a core group who have remained active, Donna McLaughlan, Kath Balcombe and Eric Toole, the group was reinvigorated. The local association exists to listen to and support the local teachers. The main activities have been based around building comradeship amongst the teachers working in Canowindra by hosting social events for the teachers, mostly BBQ's and casual afternoon teas. For the past 25 years the local group have awarded a scholarship to a worthy student who is moving from one of the feeder primary schools to the high school with the aim of helping with this transition. Mark said that the work of the union is ongoing and that he has been proud to have been a member of a union that cares about the welfare of students and the community, as well as of the teaching staff.

Pictured above: Mr Mark Edwards receiving his NSWTF life membership from Mr Steve Wilson who is the current Teachers Federation Representative for Canowindra High School.

CANOWINDRA HIGH SCHOOL has become a White Ribbon School! On Tuesday 13th February, Mrs Bron Porter and Mr Steve Wilson travelled to Orange High School to participate in the final training stage of Canowindra High becoming a White Ribbon School.

The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement of men and boys working to end male violence against women and girls. The campaign’s intention is to raise awareness about the prevalence of male violence against women. Through education, awareness raising campaigns, preventative programs and community partnerships, White Ribbon Australia highlights the positive role men can play to stop violence against women and enables them to be part of this social change. Canowindra High’s journey of becoming a White Ribbon School began late in 2017 with Mr Dan Smith and Mr Steve Wilson completing the introductory stage of the training. To reinforce the White Ribbon message, the High School joined Canowindra Public and other important members of the community to participate in the White Ribbon Day march for 2017.

In 2018 the following Canowindra High staff

members, Mr Steve Wilson, Mrs Bron Porter and

Mr Zac Rue are excited to implement awareness

programs and strategies to highlight the White

ribbon message, not only in our school but also

in the wider community.
