Introduction

The American University in Cairo (AUC) has previously published only one list of facultypublications for the 1982 - 1983 academic year. In his introduction to this list, I. MoyerHunsberger, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty wrote: “Thereputation of a faculty member among the community of scholars in his or her discipline isenhanced by publication, as is the reputation of his or her university.”

The current list of publications, which will be published annually, has a number of goals:• Showcase faculty research productivity• Increase the visibility of the research, scholarly and creative works by AUC faculty• Help in the preparation of news releases to the media about new research, in efforts

to raise the profile of the university and develop deeper connections with the localcommunity

• Serve as a vehicle for faculty members to get to know about each others’ work andinterests

• Help people who look for faculty with expertise in a certain area• Increase interdisciplinary and collaborative research among AUC faculty• Emphasize the importance of research as an integral part of faculty responsibilities• Encourage faculty to increase their research productivity• Serve as a database and historical record of AUC faculty publications

The purpose, however, is not for this list of publications to serve as the sole criterion bywhich a faculty member is judged. The university does not consider the quantity ofpublications to be a substitute for the quality; and while a faculty member may not havepublished in 2006, he or she may very well have had several publications in previous years. In addition, the various statistics for the schools and departments are provided in thispublication for the record and should not be used — independent of other factors — forcomparative purposes. It is also acknowledged that the expected number and type ofpublications published by a faculty member vary greatly by discipline.

The Faculty Publications 2006 was compiled from the hard copies of the 2006 AnnualFaculty Reports (thanks to Basma El Maabady at the vice provost’s office). Every effort hasbeen made to make this list as accurate and complete as possible. A draft of this list hasbeen checked for accuracy by the faculty, school deans and other units.

Since this is the first annual list compiled since 1983, it contains only faculty who publishedin 2006. In future years, all faculty names will be listed regardless of whether they havepublications. An effort has been made to provide a list which is consistent throughout theuniversity in terms of bibliographic style and format. This style is shown on the next page. Please report any error you find in this list to the Office of the Vice Provost.
