Instructional Engagement and CollaborationCMU provides many technologies and services to faculty members that can be used to supplement and extend the traditional classroom experience. As a faculty member at CMU, these tools are all available to you, providing increased options for continual feedback, greater flexbility with communication, meaningful data for determining effectiveness, and other technology services that have been designed to meet your pedagogical needs.

Commonly used engagement technologies include:Blackboard and WimbaClassroom “clickers”Virtual LabsMediated ClassroomsChipcast

BlackboardYou can think of Blackboard as an online extension of the physical classroom; it is commonly used to distribute course syllabi, deliver assignments, and manage course grades. However, Blackboard brings with it a great many other capabilities:

Create online discussion boardsEmail your students in bulk or individuallySort your students into groups for projectsPost relevant announcementsHold online assessmentsUse classroom “clickers” to foster engagementHold live streaming sessions through Wimba

Mediated ClassroomsVirtually all of CMU’s 290 classrooms are equipped with mediation technology, allowing faculty to show videos, display documents for collaboration, and interact with other media in meaningful ways.

Use of this mediation is managed through a simple touch-screen interface, but to receive instruction on how to effectively use CMU’s mediated classrooms, contact Media Services at (989) 774-3891.

For more information on using the technologies listed below and on the following page, including how to receive training or review how-to guides, please see the back page.

ChipcastChipcast is CMU’s internal system for the production and sharing of podcast and vidcast material with students and colleagues. Using Chipcast, you can easily capture your presentations or lectures to share with your students if you wish, or you can create other material that supplements the physical classroom experience.

To find out more about how to use these features, visit https://blackboard.cmich.edu and click the “Faculty Tutorials” link located in the right-hand navigation.

Software and Virtual LabsCMU offers “Virtual Labs” that can be accessed from any computer and provide access to software that may be unavailable on your computer or your students’ computers.

CMU also provides a number of software packages for faculty use. To find out which packages are available and how to obtain them, simply inquire with the Help Desk.

Test ScanningCMU provides “bubble sheet” test scanning services. You can obtain testing sheets and control sheets through your departmental office or directly from the OIT Help Desk. Completed tests can be dropped off to the Help Desk for scanning at Park Library 101.

Test results are delivered electronically and can be uploaded directly to your Blackboard grade book.

Your CMU Account (Global ID)Your CMU Global ID can be thought of as your “username” here at CMU; it’s what you will use to logon to the vast majority of online systems that you will use daily. Of course, because your Global ID can be used to access so much of your personal and academic information, it is incredibly important to keep your password safe. Treat it like a banking password—it’s that important!

If you ever need to reset your password, you can do so through the My Account section in CentralLink. If you ever lose or forget your password, the OIT Help Desk can quickly reset that for you.

CMU EmailCMU provides 2GB of email storage through our faculty/staff Microsoft Exchange email system. This system supports most common email clients—such as Outlook for Windows and for Mac—and can also be accessed online through any browser at https://mail.cmich.edu.

Students at CMU use a different email system than faculty and staff; we call it “CMail.” It is accessed differently than your Exchange account, so remember that your email experience will differ from that of your students.

UDrivesAs a faculty member, you have up to 10GB of network-based storage available to you through your CMU “UDrive.” The UDrive is a secured, backed-up storage system that you can access from any computer on campus—or even from off-campus through the use of VPN software.

Your UDrive is a great way to ensure that you have all of the files that you need for class from any computer to which you log in.

CentralLinkCMU maintains an internal webspace named “CentralLink.” Through CentralLink, you can find and access nearly all of the services that are available to you as a member of CMU’s faculty. Commonly accessed services include the following:

PrintQ

Our primary goals for PrintQ are to promote thoughtful and responsible printing from students and to reduce waste. Please keep this in mind when you assign students material that requires printing, and consider distributing or receiving the copies electronically instead.

Class listsPay statementWeb gradesPerformance reviewCourse search & registration

Visit CentralLink at https://centrallink.cmich.edu

PrintQ is CMU’s printing management system for students. Each student receives a printing allocation at the beginning of the semester, and all documents printed in PrintQ enabled locations use a small portion of this allocation. The amount allocated is different between undergraduate and graduate students.

CONNECT: CMU Cellular ServicesCMU offers cellular telephone service options through our Telecommunications office. Through this program, you can receive discounts on devices and service through AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon.
